MODELLINGContinuing the theme of modelling, analogies and helping bring science to life, we are going to go to Poundland and spend a maximum of £3 each to buy resources to model a scientific topic or bring the topic to life – on a shoestring! You will be given a topic from the list below and you will work in small groups of 2-3 people to generate your idea and present it to the rest of the group. When the presentations are taking place I’d like each of you to note the strengths and weaknesses of the model/concept illustrated – you can make and keep notes on the following pages: Topics for consideration: Grouping and classifying / Different Types of Animals – How do we tell them apart? / How does light behave? / What is sound? / what do we mean by solid, liquid & gas? / What are forces? / Electricity / Measuring and recording / Plant and animal life cycles / What happens when something dissolves? / The Human Body / Earth & Space… Remember – don’t just do the actual process, try to use props to show what can’t be seen or to bring the science to life. You should use the KS1/2 Science Programmes Of Study to get further detail which may help you http://bit.ly/KS3POS2013
Self-Study Session: Subject Knowledge Development MatterAccess the BBC Bitesize website and access the Key Stage 3 States of Matter content – Complete the reading (revision), activity and tests. Again, there are a good number of video clips in the Classroom Resources section which you can use to help develop further insights into the topic if necessary. KS1 Bitesize Materials: http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/topics/zrssgk7 KS2 Bitesize Materials: http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/topics/zryycdm You can see that there are a lot of video clips to watch but thinking back to your work on modelling and analogies, how might you plan a lesson on an aspect of this topic? Referring to your copy of the Science KS1/2 Programme Of Study, put together / plan an hour’s worth of classroom activity based around any aspect of KS1 or 2 Materials – You chose and be prepared to present your ideas to your group and to the whole group. (You don’t have to create the resources etc. – just write down what you would plan to do etc!) You could try using the following 5-minute lesson plan to help get your ideas together if you like? (planning in detail requires more than this but it’s a useful place to start!):
