July 17, 2011 Libr 244-11/Kassel San Jose State University Problem 1 Use at least two directory files to find candy manufacturers located in California, Georgia, and New York. A directory file is a database that provides brief, factual or descriptive information and is used for quick look-ups (find an address, confirm a name, locate a place, etc.). Dialog’s OneSearch groups includes names and links for directories http://library.dialog.com/bluesheets/html/blo.html. Scan through the list to find groups with the word “directory” in the OneSearch Group. Since many company directories organize information by SIC codes, visit the SIC code look up at http://www.osha.gov/oshstats/sicser.html and select a code to use. SIC codes are produced by the U.S. government and application of SIC codes are one way to find information about a company with greater precision. Because there are various categories within the candy manufacturing industry, select one category to work with. You may use your judgment about which code to select. Type 5-10 hits in full format from each file searched and review your hits to ensure they contain required information. Summary I began the process by first viewing the Database by OneSearch Group to decide which directories to use. I had written down a few names and file numbers to look up and after reviewing the BlueSheets, I decided on using the American Business Directory (531) and Gale Group Company Intelligence (479), under the OneSearch group Company Directories (CODIR). I then went to the United States Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Administration website and looked for a relevant SIC code and found 2064, which is Candy and Other Confectionery Products. I began by using Dialog OneSearch. I inputted ‘B 531, 479’, and it brought me up with both database directories. I then started out with searching for sc=2064, followed by searching for California, Georgia, and New York by using the state code, ‘st=ca’, ‘st=ga,’ and ‘st=ny’. Combining the search terms, I noticed that I received a lot of results about New York candy manufacturers and several from California for one of the databases, but only one from Georgia that was within the immediate 40 results from both files. I searched for the SIC number with Georgia alone and was gifted with 28 results. I tried to combine it with the others but I couldn’t figure out how to include it without excluding the other states but not pushing all the results to the back like before. I decided to just use both searches, because by using the ‘or’ operator it seemed to just excluded Georgia, and the ‘and’ operator didn’t bring any results because there were no results about candy manufacturers in all three states. The same happened with California; it seemed that File 479 contained many from California up front, but 531 did not. I did a specific search for California and found results from both files. I know that I could have searched for them all at once using [t 8/9/1-20 from each], but it might have been more than the first couple of twenty results and for the sake of the length of the search, I chose narrow it down even further. I wanted to include results from each state for each file. Even so, I received several relevant results for candy manufacturers in all three states that included phone numbers, addresses, even staff and owners.
