In addition to Navarre, the expansion of the Corridor incorporates the Autonomous Community of Aragon into the Atlantic Corridor's sphere of influence, where the GM Figueruelas plant is located, the most productive General Motors assembly plant in Europe and numerous companies linked to the car sector.
The main need for this section is to have double track along its length and to adapt to European standards, especially the UIC gauge of 1,435 mm, the ability to operate trains 740 m in length and the ERTMS management system.

  1. CONCLUSION

In summary, the integration of the Section Zaragoza-Pamplona-Bilbao to the Atlantic Corridor is necessary because:

• The density difference of the TEN-T Transport Corridors in the different areas of the European Union is disproportionate, and south-west Europe needs to increase its competitiveness and social cohesion.
• The section proposed to be incorporated into the Atlantic Corridor is already declared as Core Network by Regulation (EU) No 1316/2013 of the European Parliament and therefore highlights its European importance within the trans-European transport network as a whole .
• Navarre is one of the most industrialized regions in Europe, with a very technological industrial sector and a great export capacity. Its commercial relations mainly focus on Europe, through the Atlantic Corridor.
• The enlargement incorporates Aragón and Navarra into the Atlantic Corridor's sphere of influence, and allows the connection of the two corridors that cross the Iberian Peninsula, and the ports of the Cantabrian and Mediterranean seas.
• The Noáin-Pamplona intermodal terminal, one of the largest in the north of Spain, supports the increase in the use of railways by companies in the area, which currently use the road for freight transport.
• The incorporation by ATLANTIC CORRIDOR in its Corridor Information Document 2017 of the extension of the Atlantic Corridor through Pamplona and Zaragoza with the Mediterranean Corridor underscores the European importance of this expansion.
The expansion of the Atlantic Corridor is important for Navarre, for Spain and for the whole of Europe.
