6766 Adelaide Assay Office, Adelaide Pound 1852, second type with crenulated inner circle on reverse. Small test cut at 7 o'clock (near 22), also sl scr at 10 o'clock. A late striking with the characteristic 5 dots above 22C. Much old-time toning over considerable lustre. EF or better. (P) $10000 $15000



PORT PHILLIP COINS

6767 Kangaroo Office Port Phillip 1853 ¼oz struck in copper (3.8gm). From deteriorated dies with pimples in the fields & sharp high rims or collar. Found in the late 1950s-early 1960s in Mildura. This is probably a 1920s "Stokes" strike struck from original rusted and subsequently clnd dies, not one of the more recent replicas. As struck. Rare. (P) $1500 $3000

6768 Kangaroo Office Port Phillip 1853 Gold 2oz. This example ex collection of the infamous forger David Gee is struck in 24ct gold. (ex Status auction 217). One of only 6 examples struck by him!!! Only 3 genuine examples recorded, 2 of which are in museums. A similar Port Phillip 1oz sold in our auction 209. It was subsequently offered for auction interstate, estimated $12000 - $14000 (and sold). (P) $7000 $10000
