980. Farr, William E. THE RESERVATION BLACKFEET, 1882 - 1945 A Photographic History of Cultural Survival (Double Presentation copy). Seattle: Univ. of Wash., 1984. First Edition. ISBN: 029596040X. Book. 4to cloth with silver Indian pictorial line details/drawings. 210pp. Illustrated profusely with vintage b/w photos. Index. A long, several line inscription originally written by Farr to May Dull Vallance on a card or other source has been re-written in Vallance's hand on the title page. She even signed it in behalf of Farr. Vallance provided several photos for the book. Vallance also wrote a brief presentation to another person, Caroline Davis. Vallence also wrote some rather extensive & interesting annotations below several photos. This book & the exhibit from which it was drawn was the result of the author's belief that late 19th Century & 20th Century Blackfeet culture, & memory of cultural history, was being lost. The extensive collection of photos, snapshots, etc., and the extensive text provided by Farr go a long ways in restoring that memory. A tremendous book & nice association copy. Fine in dj. 997. Ferber, Edna. CIMARRON (A unique copy). Aeonian, N.p., N.d., 1989. First Thus. Book. A unique copy, in the true sense of the word. Small 8vo. gilt-stamped cloth. 388pp. Unpublished, only one copy bound & printed. A little printery called Aeonian (stated only on the binding) was to print this edition using Grosset & Dunlap plates. This edition was to be published by another small press in Oklahoma at the time of the centennial (1989) of the first run into Oklahoma, but the gilt stamping on the front cover was not as nice as the publisher wanted & the edition died in its infancy. The stamping is actually quite strong, but some of the underlying cloth shows through in little pinpricks or tiny gaps in the gilt. The stamp is of a prairie schooner over the outline of the State of Oklahoma. Above it are the words: "1889 1989". Under it are the words: "Centennial Edition". With this copy comes the 5/8" thick, 1 7/16" x 2 1/8" original metal stamp, in a little custom nylon pouch with black flocked faux velvet finish. Your bookseller received this original printing information directly from the publisher. Fine copy. No dust jacket was printed. Rader 1355. Fine. Hardcover. (#0711120) $250.00

1010. Fink, John). (Troy, New York). (Fort Smith and Van Buren, Arkansas). ORIGINAL LETTERS (Arkansas, New York). New York & Arkansas: n.p., 1877. Letter. Not a book. Original handwritten letters & other personal ephemera, the vast majority being personal letters written to Mr. John Fink. 163 items. (All but a small handful include their original envelopes, stamped & canceled). Fink grew up and resided during boyhood and early manhood at two addresses in the same block of 9th Street in Troy, New York, only a few blocks from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He then moved to Fort Smith, Arkansas, where he had relatives, & lived back and forth between Fort Smith and Van Buren, practicing his trade as a jeweler and watchmaker. Please note that this collection is comprised of material written TO Fink. Only a couple of items were written by Fink, such as a short school essay, "A Visit to Saratoga". The letters originating from Upstate New York are from family & friends. The letters from Arkansas are from friends, business associates & partners. There are also letters from a few other locations as far away as Salt Lake City. Regarding the content of the letters, while some include political & historical references, most are personal in nature. However, as one reads through & begins to recognize the style & subject matter of various individuals, a kind of social consciousness of the times begins to emerge with concerns and comments about personal health (and public health: small pox struck Troy in 1880), life in Troy & in Arkansas, weather, employment, travel, marriage, separation of family ("when are you coming home"), etc. One even finds letters alluding to sexual pursuit & conquest, racism & treatment of Negroes in Arkansas, etc.. What comes through strongest is the love among family & friends. Of particular interest in this collection is a long, two-page, handwritten report of Dr. J. E. Bennett, U.S. Examining Surgeon, Ft. Smith, on Bennett's letterhead ("Office of J. E. Bennett U. S. Examining Surgeon Bonneville Block"). In 1882 Fink accidentally shot himself almost point blank in the head with a .44 revolver (the ball following along the line of the jaw, glancing down into the shoulder, where it remained & was not extracted). Fink remarkably survived & was treated at length by Bennett. The latter sent his descriptive report of the wound & the treatment on to Fink, who completed his recuperation back home in Troy. The vast majority of these letters from the 1880s decade. This is a remarkable collection, especially so because the envelopes are present. We have not been able to find much on Fink in Fort Smith, although included in the collection is a small professionally printed calendar from February 1950, "John Fink Jewelry Company, 701 Garrison Ave., Fort Smith, Arkansas." It is obvious in this correspondence that Fink envisioned his career in jewelry & pursued it without wavering. WITH THIS COLLECTION WILL BE INCLUDED a painstakingly compiled digital data base in digital format. Your bookseller read all the letters (not so easy to do) & compiled the following database: 1) Date written, 2) post mark location, 3) type of item (mainly letter), 4) presence of postal stamp (almost always "yes"), 5) "from whom and salutation location", 6) a very brief statement of key content, 7) location of Fink when letter was sent, 8) identity of printed letterheads & or envelopes, 9) Salutation of letter (Friend John, Dear Son John, J. Fink Esq., Dear Old John, etc.), 10) presence of envelope or not (in almost all cases, yes). This database is in Excel, so columns can be moved around and arranged by sequential dates, the identity of the writer, etc.. WITH THIS COLLECTION WILL ALSO BE INCLUDED 7 digital color photographs of the residences in which Fink lived on 9th Street in Troy, 1877 - 1894, taken by your bookseller during a trip through New York.
