The Gulf Stream is part of a general clockwise rotating system of currents in the North Atlantic. It is
fed by the westward-flowing North Equatorial Current moving from North Africa to the West Indies.
It was first described by the Spanish navigator and explorer Juan Ponce de León early in the 16th
century. In 1844 systematic surveying of the stream was begun. The marine organisms of the Gulf
Stream system are not of great commercial value. Its warm waters, however, in mingling with the
colder waters both on the Grand Banks and off north-western Europe, contribute to turbulence and
the availability of nutrient salts that made these regions amongst the most productive commercial
fishing grounds in the world until they were overfished in the 1980s and early '90s.
