The potato plant is native to the Peruvian Andes. It was cultivated in Peru and Bolivia and, along
with corn, was the main food of the Incas. It was introduced into Europe by 16th-century Spanish

powers such as the ability to cure certain illnesses, and so long as the plant remained rare in Europe,

shortly thereafter in the Netherlands and in Switzerland.
