In the early 20th century, the population of Macedonia was composed of many different peoples,
usually fighting one another. That such a land of violence and conflict in the last days of the Ottoman
Empire would produce a future winner of the Nobel Peace Prize would have seemed highly
improbable. Yet in Skopje, one of the two men who opened the town's first theatre was an Albanian
married to a Serb. A daughter was born into this typically cosmopolitan Macedonian family, who, as
Mother Theresa, would find her
vocation in far away places, doing charitable work among the
victims of poverty and neglect- particularly in the slums of Calcutta, India. In 1979, she was awarded
the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of her humanitarian efforts.
