Addis Ababa is the capital of Ethiopia and the centre of Shiva city. Being the biggest city of
Ethiopia, Addis Ababa stands on a marshy plateau which is surrounded by hills and mountains in the
middle of the country. It became the capital of the country at the end of the 19th century. Entoto ,
which was the erstwhile capital of the country and was on a high plain as well, was inadequate as a
capital, being a cold city and not having enough combustibles. Taitu, who was the empress of the
country, persuaded his husband Menelik II, who reigned over the country between 1889-1913, to
have a mansion built near the hot water sources down the plain and to give out the soils around to the
nobles. Founded in 1987, the city was named by the empress as Addis Ababa, which means ―New
Flower‖.
