Whiting started hitting and I was real busy just trying to keep two rods out. I was rebaiting one line and the other rod had a fish on when I see it bend over and line starts flying out. It had a good run and then it was dropped. When I brought the line in the back half of the whiiting was gone. Same thing happened a little later with another whiting that was hooked. There were some toothies out there for sure this morning. Around 8:30 something bigger than a whiting hits my bait and has the LDX bent over. Ended up being this 28" drum. In the next hour or so I caught three pomps and a bunch more whiting. The largest pomp was this one that was 2.5lbs. It looks small next to that drum.

Got there thursday night bob hall was closed. Fished the surf next to it caught several hard heads.
Friday- pier opened around 1030, whiting in the second cut. They quit biting around 2. Fished at the end of bob hall til 11 that night, no fish, not one bite. Couldn't lose shrimp. Moved location to the shipping channel. Spent the night fishing. No fish. One group of guys caught 8 nice reds off live shrimp.
Saturday- Dont know the name of the area, but we fished the channel other side of the road from crab man. We couldn't lose shrimp. Every one we talked to fishing report was the same. Had about 25 rods out but still no fish. Moved at 5 to hoarce cadwell pier and spent there night. Cleaned up on whiting off dead shrimp. Had a short run on cut piggy perch and one run off small whole whiting. Never had a chance to set the hook on either run.
We would of done better if we had bought live shrimp but we don't have an aerator so we didnt waste money on them. Hopefully well do better when we go back in march.

2-16-19, 2012 Lots of whiting and 1 pomp whiting 17th before storm
2-20-12
I fished my way down PINS yesterday. Driving in the morning was as good as it gets. Fishing was a little slow though - lots of whiting and not much else. Water was pretty good all the way down. I'm sure there were a few pomps to be had out there somewhere, but I never found them. Decided to try the jetties for some sheepies. They were thick. Got a quick limit and called it a day. Didn't run into anything particularly photogenic, so no pics.
2-20-12
On my way home from doing a number of chores in town I drove SBH. Go figure. Guess my truck has a mind of its own. Anyway, with the onshore winds today surf was a little rougher than the past 2 days. Water was somewhat stained but not too bad. On my 3mi. walk I talked to several fisherpersons. Lots of whiting, quite a few pomps and a fair number of slot drum being caught. Most were using ghost shrimp. Yup, winter Texans. Might have to hit the sand Wed or Thur. According to weather reports it should be good surf weather. BUT WEATHERMEN HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO BE WRONG!
2-23-12
According to Matt Antonelle at Horace Caldwell Pier, anglers fishing off the pier caught large numbers of whiting and some pompano, black drum and stingrays, as well as a bonnet head shark.
3-1-12

Sharon Keehlisen of Woody’s Sports Center reports anglers from the north jetty have caught speckled trout, while south jetty anglers came back with black drum and sheepshead. From the surf, fishermen were catching pompano, and from the pier they caught whiting and sand trout.
3-4-12
it the beach before sunrise this morning and I was able to make good time on the way down south with the low tide. Water was chocolate and I did not have high hopes for much of anything. Tried a few spots and was surprised with lots of whiting and a couple of pomps. MP 35 Sargassum season will be here soon! Thanks for the report!
3-4-12
The surf has been a little show lately outside of whiting, even when the weather has been right. Try either side of the first and second bar. Keep on using your shrimp, but throw some fishbites into the mix as well. Once the mullet show up, work them in as well. Nice fresh shrimp though, not that gooey nastiness you get at some of the bait stands. I catch a lot of fish in the surf and rawlbay is right on in his post. Mainly whiting these days but I did catch sharks the last 2 times I've been out. Pomps are better when the gulf is green. Whiting almost anytime. Haven't seen any reds in a while. Am going with my wife tomorrow and will give a report on my return.
3-4-12 PINS

3-4-12 South Jetty
It was gorgeous out there. Lots of people though. I saw a stringer leaving that had three 20in+ Specks on it. Every group who left carrying a stringer had a few sheepshead, but I didn't notice any limits. One guy had a few nice Spanish Mackerel as he left carrying his stringer.
3-5-12 near Port Aansas apparently
Caught a bunch of whiting and 1 pomp. The pomp is marked for topdog15 for his research. The return trip was quite a bit different than in the morn.
3-5-12
Plenty of sheephead out yesterday, some nice pomps, and a few small spanish have made their way in. Live shrimp is the way to go if you want your limit of sheepies. Spanish were on the plugs. the birds were working hard about 150 yards of the tee. But my concern is that the grass will be here soon and make it a chore to slide line, but nothing you enjoy comes cheep.
3-15-12 PINS
Went out around noon and spent only a couple hours. Caught a couple nice pomps and a ton of small to medium whiting. seaweed started picking up so I called it quits.

3-13-12
Hit Bob Hall about 9:30am and fished til about 2pm. Caught Pompano, (good size), Sheepshead, Spanish Mack's and a few small whiting. Had a very good time on the pier with a great group of people, both locals and winter texans. Our total was 6 Pomps, 1 Mac, 1 Sheepshead and 1 Stingray. Could have cought more Macs and Sheepshead but just wanted one of each to compare taste. Got talked into trying the Stingray, but not to sure about it!! No whiting worth keeping. Several people went off the pier with thier limits of Sheepies and Mac's

3-12-17, 2012 BHP: Went down for spring break with the family. Between the 4 of us we boxed over 140 spanish mackeral for the week. Did manage a pompano in the mix but we were mostly fishing for smacks. Thursday 6 of us limited out by 2:30. Since there were 4 in our group we had to clean 60 fish that afternoon and freeze them for the ride back to Dallas. All in all a great week of fishing and family.

I launched my good ole reliable GP760 Yamaha Waverunner yesterday afternoon around 3:00 and headed out the Packery Jetties and headed north up the beach shoreline just messing around jumping waves until I saw the massive BOILING schools of Spanish everywhere!!
3-25-12
Hit Bob Hall about 10:30am and had a very frustrating day. Had one shark right up to the pier and did a "Professional Release" !! Had 4 smacks hit my slab spoon one after the other and did not hook any of them. Had as few others flash. There were several Pomps and Smacks cought by others and they were getting some Jacks off the tee. One guy fought one all the way to the beach. It turned out to be about a 30 pounder. Will give it a try a little earlier tomorrow.
3-26-12 Sheepshead, pompano and few smacks
3-26-12
We went to Bob Hall Pier Monday. Saw all the weeds on the beach road. The pier was busy with fisher-men/women fishing on both sides. This was my first time there and I am sure I'll be going back. Got a black tip shark to take home and caught and saw lots of bonnet head shark caught. There were also catches of Spanish Mackerel, Pompano and a Jack Crevalle. The weather was absolutely beautiful!!!
3-29-12
Jeff Miller at Horace Caldwell Pier said anglers returned with pompano, Spanish mackerel, black drum and whiting. In the bay, anglers caught Spanish mackerel, redfish, sand trout and gafftop.

Glad to see some blue water, I was SBH for about 6 hours. Weed was hit and miss but managed 1 pomp, 15 bonnethead(more or less) countless whiting, heardhead and one gaftop. PINS looks like the place to be as I had an ugly encounter with some people whom thought kicking a soccer ball that hit my truck was a good idea. I knew I should have gone to the PINs, if only for the solitude. Even with the weed those pictures look awesome. Tight lines!!!
4-1-12
Went out to about the 20-25mm , I caught some pompano and a ton of whiting. Oh and I caught a good sized gaftop pomp. All on fishbites and live shrimp.

Headed to BHP with a quart of live shrimp and just hoping to spend a good day in the water.
I boxed 19 Pompano...some of them hosses using live shrimp under a popping cork. The water was beautiful and I was able to sight cast to several pomps with success.
I just got done cleaning them and dinner is in about an hour...
5-22-12
Decided on a quick trip to bob hall this morning and take a peek of the water,Water looked real good the current was real slow a few bait fish were seen and past the T i did see bait busting out of the water just not close enough. A tiger shark was caught off the pier last night i was told ,I managed a trout on croaker a few pomps were also caught.
Two other friends of mine managed to get into some trout yesterday and a few days back pics included .Sea weed still in the surf as shown in some pics ,Hope to go back later and see whats going on Tight lines

9-7-12
Got to the pier about 645...water seemed green, but dingy. I give it about a 6/10 on clarity.
Nothing for about 30 minutes, then spotted some pomps cruising the back of the 3rd bar...flung a live shrimp under a popping cork at them, two pops, and landed a nice football sized pomp...thought it was fixing to be 'on'.
Saw some more, baited up, repeated...this time, I saw them swim up, look at my live shrimp and turn their nose up at it...serious WTF moment there.
I repeated this about 5 more times...very frustrating.
I moved down towards the beach in front of the 3rd bar, and started working...saw lots of smacks...and they acted just like the Pomps did...would zoom around the shrimp, but refused to eat.
Reached into my bucket, and got a SMALLER shrimp (about 3" long)...cast...BANG, caught a very big Smack...had to cut the tail off to get it into the cooler...looked to be about 25-26" long.
Unfortunately, the only shrimp I had were jumbos...and apparently, that's not what the smacks wanted...they'd look at it, and turn their nose up.
I landed another Smack, about 21" long, and headed home.
Saw lots of reds caught..one oversized, and several slots...all caught on cut bait.
9-11-12
The pomps were so agresive that they actually STRUCK my orange popping cork on multiple occasions...made me wonder if they'd hit an orange topwater! Anyway, I boxed several pomps, 12 total, and lost 2...one stupidly that was a MONSTER, I tried to fling it up on the deck wtihout using my net, and I clonked the side of the rail and it broke my line.
9-25-12 BHP
Nice sunrise...waves were bigger than expected and water somewhat sandy. There was lots of bait in the water, and several times we saw those dusky brown bait balls come through with the birds going crazy over them. Surprisingly, the bite was very slow. I saw one king hooked and then lost a little after noon on the T, a couple of good sized pomps taken, otherwise not much action from 8am-1pm. At 8 I got one big hit and a run that almost spooled me, then the line broke. I never got to see what took the bait....and never got another good hit. Everyone on the pier was very nice...no problems such as have been reported lately. Oh yeah, did see one really big turtle swim by.
10-6-12
Coming home with fresh fish to eat is always a bonus on BHP. We iced down 30 or so keeper whiting and a really big croaker. We had a relaxing evening with some fish too.
10-6-2012
Driving good, except for idiots parked in one road and camped in the other. Water clear, not too rough. Finger mullet decreased as I drove south, but as I caught nothing on them, no biggy.
Mostly hardheads and small to medium bay whiting chewed up my Fishn'Strips tipped with peeled shrimp at MP 29 1/2 and MP 32. Finally found a good pinch at MP 37, where little jacks and skippies bugged me, but if the bait stayed out long enough something bigger and better would eventually pounce. Wound up cleaning 2 quarts of whiting filets, having finally found the big surf whiting way over the second bar. Also got a 1-lb, a 3-lb, and two 4-lb pomps, plus a personal best smack measuring 31 inches. I found a fresh back half of a skippy in the smack's gut, leading me to speculate it'd come back around to nail the head half still on my leader, and got more than it bargained for.
10-20-12
Excellent pomp chew at BHP Very good size up to 4 lbs..many happy anglers as the fish were almost everywhere..dead shrimp and orange fishbites was the ticket.
10-30-12
First let me say the pomps were biting pretty fair this morning at the pier. Also a few small sharks and really small smacks.
11-1-12
Got a late start and an early finish. Water at PINS down to MP 21 was clear and the surf low, with a few thick patches of dead weed onshore and in the first gut, but generally fishable with long rods. Driving was excellent, with just a couple of the usual S4Bs parking in the road or end-on to driftwood instead of out of the way behind it.
Stopped first at MP 18 and picked up 3 keeper pomps, 2 undersized pomps and a couple of large whiting, but then the hardheads and giant skipjacks moved in. Moved on down to a slight pinch at MP 21, and got pretty steady keeper pomps and whiting until noon. From noon 'til one it was a pomp or two every cast, but all were undersized, so I headed home.
Wound up boxing 10 pomps and 10 whiting. Largest 3 pomps went 3-4 lbs, but most were in the 1-2 lb range. They hit every color of shrimp Fishn'Strips, tipped with peeled shrimp.
There were plenty of finger mullet, but I didn't see anything chasing them, nor did I catch any for bait. I did catch one crevalle jack, but it was only as big as the biggest pomp.

it's been a few years since I posted a message so as I head back to San Antonio now seems like a good time. Don't get me wrong, I've kept up with this board I just don't get to fish as much as I use to. I decided to meet my son Aaron, who now lives in Corpus for a PINS trip. I left SA Saturday at 3am with my youngest son Joe and future son-in-law Chuy. We met Aaron at the HEB Plus in Flour Bluff and hit the sand by 6am. We headed south and decicded to fish at 17.5. Aaron immediately hooked a 4lb pomp and Joe caught an 18" whiting. We caught whiting after whiting on fishbites and shrimp. We snagged a few nullet and Chuy caught his first ever Smak. At 2:30 the tide turned and all 4 lines we had in the water got hit. We were able to box a 27" and 25.5" red. We lost the other two reds, one because of a poor knot tied by dad and the other to the sandbar. We ended the day with 3 slot reds, 1 pomp, and 4 whiting. We got a later start today and made it to 23 by 8:30. No baitfish = no fish. We caught a mess of whiting all morning then we snagged a few mullet.
11-4-12
got there around noon settled around the 3rd gut about 50yrds from the T. Not much bait and small pods of weed roolled in about 2 but was gone around 3, water was nice and clear. lots of Pomps were caught to the left of us, and the guys on the T were constantly hooking up with kings and small sharks all afternoon. Tried slide lineing for the first time and had 2 or 3 good hits before i landed my first king ever. What a fight.lol Gf ended up with one pomp and a spanish mack. My buddy ended up with 2 kings one going 45in.Didnt see anybody on the pier land any reds today.
11-16-12 Bob Hall
I took a stroll to the end the other evening counting over 30 rods on the end (all but about 2 or 3; okay, maybe 4 not in use) and no more than four people out there. My favorite was the fellows tearing up the King fish during the day and leaving their rods in the holders all night so no one else could move in and fish. But, to their credit they were giving their Kings away.
11-17-19, 2012
My dad and I made way down the beach on Sat from San Antonio. We left around 0530. We hit the sand on the low tide and headed south looking for some good water. On the way, we noted quite a bit of weed and lots of jellyfish. Some spots worse than others. We made it to the PM jetties noted some campers and decided to track a bit north. We found some nice water and made it home for a couple nights. Plenty of finger mullet and we found the weed manageable when fishing close to shore. During the high tide in the afternoon, the weed/debris was bad and we mostly relaxed, listen to the radio, ate, and enjoyed a few beers. This turned into a good plan as all fish were caught on the low tide, early morning till about 1200. We ended up releasing over twice as many reds as we took home. Some double hook-ups kept us busy. For a while we thought the cooler would be looking empty given the bull reds, so we put some shrimp out for pomps. There was one area that produced with some steady action on Sun and a couple Mon morning. The pomps were good size. It was a great trip and weather was awesome. Water color also improved as the days passed, but some areas were pretty bad with the weed which we saw on the way in on Mon. The beach looked really nice on the north end and there were a few folks enjoying the day. It is still manageable to be out in the water in shorts! Hope you enjoy the pictures and Happy Thanksgiving to you, family, and friends. Cheers!
11-18-12
We hit the surf for a few hours Sunday morning. Waves were light and hardly any weed. We soaked some shrimp, ghost shrimp and cut whiting. Water was a bit cold and didn't try catching any mullet. Didn't see many either. We fished for about 3 hours and caught about a dozen whiting and 3 sting rays. Had more fun with the kiddos sucking up ghost shrimp. Had a couple of nice hits on cut whiting, but never hooked up. Picked up some Fishbites last night and gonna give it a try again in a few hours. Family is sleeping and I'm trying to get some work done. Here's a quick photo of our catch so far. 11-19 Caught about 20 more whiting and another sting ray this morning. The bite was on for about an hour and then they left. The kiddos were wearing me out. As soon as I'd get a rod set and in the rod holder, another would get hit. They were running a lot smaller today and kept several for cut bait. May hit HC Pier later today in hopes of finding that ellusive bull red. 11-19 Never made it to HC Pier yesterday. Hit the surf this morning just north of Fish Pass jetties. No telling how many whiting the kiddos caught. Kept 15 nice ones for another fish fry. Also caught 2 small pomps. The redfish are still hiding from me. I put out a couple of rods with cut whiting and mullet, but couldn't buy a decent bite. Kiddos and wife are worn out. May try the pier this evening running solo.
11-19-12
Mrs Y and I took one of our grandsons to fish the surf this morning at SBH It was a Beautiful Day. I casted up some mullet and Xavier used Fishbites. I caught a 35" and a 25" Redfish and Xavier caught several Whiting. Mrs Y got one nice size Blue.
11-19-12
Had a good day, water was clear, weed was light but problamatic. It would come through for a while then clear up. We wound up at the 17.6 on a nice pinch. Caught 4 nice pomps and kept 10 or so big whiting. This all was between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm. Missed a few good bites, but those Pomps were torqing. I'm sure more than a couple pulled off ..... they were coming by running about 40 mph....... made my day!!!
11-20-12
Walked the kid out today and the pompano bite was ON!!! Lots of decent smacks and quite a few smaller black tips. But again, it seemed everyone with a cooler had it FULL of nice pomps. They were getting pulled in everywhere. Biting on live and dead shrimp and various fish bites.
They had a couple big runs out on the end but nothing landed today as of 1 PM.
11-21-12
Some big Spanish.
11-22-12
Driving was fine. No four wheel needed to the 30. That's as far as we went.
Weed from about the 16 on down. Coming from the south. Fairly clean form the 15 north. Caught lots of whiting, some pompano, over sized red, and sharks. Good fishing especially early and on falling tide from 2:00 on.
11-22
I hit HC pier yesterday morning with both kiddos in tow. Morning trip produced lots of small pomps and 2 rays about the size of trask can lids. Kept a few of the bigger pomps and one of the rays got a kayak trip out to deeper water from one of the fellas on the end. Trip and I went back in the evening still looking for that bull red. Never got the redfish, but Trip caught his very first shark. We lost another one while trying to pull it up by the line. A couple of head-shakes and the 50 lb. test leader was history.
11-22
Darn! Wish I lived close by. I would definitely visit. Looks like 2 for 1 reds and all the pompono and whiting you can catch.

Went down about 1.5 miles or so, bait was nowhere to be found and even the whiting were hard to find on fishbites/shrimp. Still managed my personal best shark Black Tip I believe? Came in at 3feet (first time ever fishing with a long rod). Brought in another one that was a bit smaller, and a nice blueshish. All were realeased and swam out strong. Weed was a pain but the driving was real easy and virtually no wind. I'll be working all weekend so I have no clue when I'll be able to make it out again.
11-24-12
I am heading to bob hall tonight. I think that would be a good place to catch sime fish. The other night i saw lots of sharks caught small reds. Lots of whiting and sone FAT surf trout. don't fish there but I've read that Bob hall pier is hot right now with just about anything from shark to pompano. Packery channel always seems to be a hot spot as well. I don't get out to fish much. When I do I will wade or kayak oso bay or the Laguna off of Laguna shores. Just recently started fishing the surf. Sorry I couldn't get you more info. Next person 3pm 24th--I don't fish there but I've read that Bob hall pier is hot right now with just about anything from shark to pompano. Packery channel always seems to be a hot spot as well. I don't get out to fish much. When I do I will wade or kayak oso bay or the Laguna off of Laguna shores. Just recently started fishing the surf. 11-25-12 reported 27th Bob Hall
Got to the pier at around 8:30 on Sunday, Whiting were everywhere in the surf and easy to catch so i caught 4 to use for bait, cut the heads off and threw them on lines, I only stayed out for a few hours and all I caught was a small Shark.
11-28-12
Bob Hall was a bust for me last night, we got there at around 8 and casted some shrimp out in the surf for a bit and couldn't get any whiting and were just getting hard heads so we decided to go to our spot and try to catch bait there, caught a bunch of Piggys and cut them up and threw them out off of the right side of the T and we sat and waited and didn't even get hit a single time so we decided to pack it up, call it a bust and head home. ill try again Friday night and see what we can do.
11-29-12
I tried a little north of the SPJ today, lots of whiting in the second gut, but none in the first gut (odd)!! Introduced a nice guy to fish bites in a white truck (hope he caught some as that's what he was targeting). As for me, cut mullet, live mullet, dead mullet, fish bites all caught whiting (still better than hardhead). Better luck next time friend, it just seemed slow today.
11-30-12
Got to the pier Bob Hall at around 8, started off fishing the shallow surf for Whiting, after we caught four we decided to make our way down to our spot to start fishing and while we were walking at around 9 all of the lights shut off, that kind of sucked trying the set everything up but after about thirty minutes they came back on. We got a hit pretty quick so I let her take it figuring there would be more to come, I was wrong she out fished me. we used about a two inch section of the body of the Whiting casted out on the right about 40 yards short of the T.

Hit the beach today with some friends for a day trip. Set up at the 20 mm around 7:30 this morning, mullet were scarce was able to get a few , and it wasnt five minutes till mine line starts taking off, and the first blue of the day is on the sand. At about noon we decide to move south some . We stop at a spot that looks good at about the 25, and not long after fish bites result in some pomp action! We would land one more smaller pomp, and another blue or two. And it was an all you can catch whiting buffet on fishbites. Also paddled out some whiting passed the third bar but no takers. Some fresh weed coming in but not much a problem, just had to shake it off the lines every few minutes and they'd be fine. Driving was good, i was in my 2wd f-150 and didnt have a problem, mullet were a little hard to find. Over all great day on the sand, with no spooky encounters....this time
12-02-12
Got there about 8am plenty of people in the middle of the pier slamming macs left and right some pomps too, guy next to me caught a 4ft black tip about 3/4 down close to the t. Everyone had coolers and buckets full of macs. About 930am it just shut off and no one was catching anything. I had cut whiting siitng for a while but no takers i threw a lure got a couple of macs to come look at it but didnt have the right set up so everyone caught fish but i was a little late to the party.
12-2-12
Fished dead, live, and cut bait. Fish bit on all three. 80 fish total, 2 nice sized black drum, 73 sand trout (some as big as 15"), and 5 nice sized whiting. Fished drop offs of intracoastal. Every cast was a fish. We had to take a break from fishing just to drink a beer. We both had a good time. Fish fry time!
12-6-7, 2012
Dad and I got a little luck this past trip with an awesome pomp bite. Made it down from San Antonio on Thursday. Water was clear and clean at the blacktop, but we headed south. Ended up in the 50s where we hit a couple spots. Pomp action was fast and furious at times. All caught on HEB shrimp up close. I got some mullet in the morning, but none seen on the drive in and out. Also tried some fishing for shark with whiting but no takers. On the way out the water was not as clear as on Thur probably due to the stronger S/SE winds. Ride in and out was bumpy. Weed in the 50s was manageable with the long lines. In close not an issue as bait did not stay out long with the pomps. WE caught 36 pomps between the 2 of us.
12-7-2012
Surfin' Sapo, Tightlines and Desperado have been fishing the beach at Fish Pass for the last month. We have been hitting the pompano pretty well, especially on an incoming tide. I hit 15 pomps in 5 hours on Friday using a double drop down rig with dead shrimp and crab fishbites. I have been flinging it on my 10'6" Omega from Breakaway...wading out to the 2nd bar and casting from there. Finally sold the house in Colorado and have moved back to the beach permanently...Texan now not Winter Texan !
12-8-12 probably 8th, posted 10 am 9th
After planning a day trip with phil we met up on the beach at 0 dark 30. Since this was a pomp/red trip,i opted not to take shark gear and would later be kicking myself in the arse! Later tim ( yetti) and Ron (surfguy) would show up and get in on the catching. We all stayed pretty busy till late in the afternoon catching fish.... and as usual... Taking a lotta pix slipped my mind but heres a few. Over all it was a nice day on the beach! Bait was scarce but the predators were very active! Final count was 51 pomps. Nice to meet ron, he stayed the night to chase toothies, so hopefully he had a great night. Would have stayed but was not very well prepared Till next time.
12-15-12
Knowing they knew something I didn't I turned arround and went right back and evicted them. From the beach anyway, they just picked up and went out 50 yards or so and set back down. But they had the spot for sure because when we got set up and started catching it was steady action until 2:00 pm or so when we gave out. There was very little weed and lots of willing Pomp. We boxed 8 nice ones. It would have been a box full if we had caught every bite. I don't know how many we flat missed, several pulled off, I had one jumped off, One straightened hook. They were definatly on a feed and they were torqing !!!!!
We did not catch one Whiteing at all and only a few small Pomp. Needless to say Miss Dee said it was the best B-Day present ever!!!! No whiting.
12-17-18, 2012 MP 55?
After seeing a small window open up, phil and i decided to head south in search of a sandbar or two. Driving was awsome and there was little to no weed on the beach. Somewhere in the mid 40s we ran into cody and surfrunner, and after some bs-ing decided to continue south. Found some fishy looking water in the mid 50s and sent out the bait rods. Not long after, one of my lines start drifting and i reel in this lil puffer. Allthough no sandbars yet, it still turned out to be a very productive trip. We would end the trip with 15 sharks, 30 something pomps, 4 smacks, and 3 puffers LOL.....and the lack of whiting forced us to use a bunch of our pomps :pissed
12-18-12
I thought I hit the beach early this morning but there were already a few vehicle tracks in front of me headed south. Driving was 10+. There was a little weed in the water here and there but it was fishable. I tried a few spots in the 20's and 30's and picked up pomps at each on shrimp/Fishbites E-Z(clam, squid, shrimp and crab all worked). I also caught a few blues on the shrimp combos. That was the first time that happened to me and they tore up my DCD3 rigs. I tried frozen mullet at every spot but only caught blues. I probably should have tried cut whiting for a red. I finished with 16 pomps. One was just over 5lbs and several were over 4lbs. Thanks for the report! Those blues have been a nightmare this year so far!
12-18-12
That's the place to be right now, or was until the wind got up. I hope it dosen't blow the surf out.
We went back to that same spot yesterday. Beautifull day. And the Pomps were there for their noon time feeding again. Only this time Ol'Stanley had the lucky rod!!! I finaly got to catch all the Pomps for a change. The last one arround 1:30 or so was a bit small and was skinned up on one side with marks from shark teeth. I let him go since he was lucky enough to beat the toothy guy. I guess with the shark cruising the pomps went elswhere because the last fish of the trip was a Whiteing and he was skinned up also. After that you couldn't buy a bite, just as well because my old bad back was done for the day also.
12-21-12 Plan was to drive down to the 30s and camp for the night then head to the jetties first thing in the morning. The driving was really good so I just drove straight to the jetties. Casted out a few lines in hopes of some whiting but the catfish were in full force. Woke up the next morning to windy conditions. Since my buddy Pablo had never been to PINS I decided to go for a little cruise to show him the beach since he couldn't really see it the night before. The winds and surf would not let us fish anywhere down the the beach. The current was ripping north and the waves were crashing as far as the eye could see. On top of that we couldn't catch any kind of bait. So it was back to the jetties we went. I knew that our best chances to catch some fresh bait would be off the rocks. We walked about half way down. There were some guys catching slot reds on live mullet about 100 yards down the jetty. We found a good spot and started casting everything from shrimp to live and cut mullet. I caught a few rat reds, some small perch and a nice stingray. Pablo does really well getting me some shark bait. He lands a few pompano and a double hookup on two stingrays! We make our way back to the truck to get the shark baits out before dark. Stingrays and pompano were on the menu this evening. The rods were set so we fired up the pit and opened up a few cold ones waiting for some action. :durnk The next morning we wake up and check the baits. The stingray didn't seem to get touched but it moved and was further up current then where it was dropped. The pompano had been picked up but I guess the shark felt the hook and spit it back out. Back to the jetties we went to see if we can catch more shark bait. We walked almost all the way to the end in search of some fresh bait. The bite was rather slow but we did manage a few blue fish, pompano and I landed this solid bull red. Biggest redfish that Pablo had ever seen and coincidentally my biggest bull red measureing at 44.5".
12-22-12
Well....being that the world did not end. Neil and I felt that we would celebrate and hit the sand with the two knuckleheads. Driving was incredible on the way down and good on the way back. Pretty good current ripping south with no weed in the first gut. When we tried the second we came back with weed. Anyway...pomps were thick as were the whiting. Ended up with over 30 fish by noon. Fish included pomps, red, whiting, and blues. Fried up some of those pomps last nite. We were down about 24 or so... Fantastic day. Yall have a good xmas and new year.
12-24-12
Got there about 730am not many people pretty empty catching whiting a little hard but got one after 30 min got to the t and set out my two big rods and then finally my small bait rod cause you never know and of course after 30 min the bait rod goes off pulled in a 3ft blacktip and thirty minutes after that while I'm cleaning the blacktip the spinning reel goes off again screaming but by the time I got to it it stopped. Nothing after that but I my bug reels never moved and as I wasn't even suppose to be fishing cause its Christmas eve and the wife had alot of stuff for me to do and I snuck out early nice morning and was home by 1030am. They caught some black drum in the left corner and some small sharks like mine I was in the right corner. Well merry Christmas to all and to all a good night. BHP
12-24-12
Went almost 6 miles south of Bob hall hitting it right at sunrise. Water looked great when I got there (That changed as the day went on). At first there seemed to be very little weed in the water but when I tried throwing the long rod it got bad fast. Still ended up being a good day. Ended up with 4 pomps and a 24" drum. All were caught on Shrimp/fish bites combo.
12-25-12
FYI report Pins started off good this am and then went south in a hurry. Wind from the WNW and sand everywhere. Water changed color quickly. Pomps were hot early at the 23 and at the 26.
12-27-12
went to PINS this morning. Started around the 20 and as the day rolled on and the tides began rising we work our way north. At the 20 we only got a few whiting, 3 pomps and a small jack. Moved a few miles north and started catching loads of whiting and pomps. Then one of my poles starts to twitch and then bends over as if bowing to the fish gods of the surf. By the time I get to it, my reel is singing and the fight is on. We then moved further north and here we started singing the blues. As in bluefish. We caught about 10 with most going from 19"-22". Several large reds.
12-28-12
Made the trip down with my wife and daughter this morning. Very windy, overcast, and cold in the morning. Got pretty nice as we were leaving though around 1-2pm.
Drove to about the 22 and set up shop. It started out slow but the pomps turned on around 10. It was non stop from then till we left. I ended up keeping about a dozen nice pomps and several monster whiting! My last fish was a really nice 27" red. I also got broke off early on my big set up. Not sure what happend but that fish flat owned me for a few seconds till he was gone. Wish I would have seen what it was.
It was a great day with my girls!!! I caught some fish and they found some cool shells and other beach treasures! We are back at the lease now and going to fry some tomorrow. Life is good!!!!

Art Singleton with Woody’s Sports Center said anglers on the Island Queen have been catching redfish, mangrove snapper, sheepshead and whiting.
1-10-13
Bay guides have been catching black drum, a few redfish and some flounder, according to Hilburn.
At the jetties, “sheepshead is full-on,” he said.

Headed to the pier around 5 after getting some live shrimp at Jane's. The end of the pier was crowded so we set up a few light poles back and fished until 10:30. talked to a guy early that was leaving with one drum. He said the night before he saw six drum and a nice red caught. While we were there we saw one large drum caught and a few small specks with live shrimp under a cork under the lights. We were using live shrimp and fish bites and crab gulps. We caught a lot of small whiting and left with a dozen. About half were caught on fish bites, the rest on fish bites with live shrimp. I did catch the largest whiting on a crab gulp. Pulled in a lot of oyster shell clumps but none had live oysters. As a kid we used to fish in a boat off the end of the pier. Am I right that there was an oyster reef there? This was in the 70's.
1-12-13 Bunch of nice whiting off the end of Horace Caldwell pier. Posted jan 12 at 2 pm. Not sure when.
1-11-13 Night of the bull whiting
Well, Once again I awake at the early hour of around 1 AM. I feel well rested and that's a good thing, because I have a LONG day ahead of me. As soon as I arrive at the pier, I realize how foggy it actually is. I cannot even see past the first light. I can see the lights through the fog, but I cannot tell if there are any fishermen on the pier. I know they are there because of the cars in the parking lot, but to actually see anyone, that's impossible. As I walk out on the pier I realize the water is crystal clear. I can see the bottom at the first, second and third lights. I cannot recall seeing the water any clearer than it is this night. As I am practicing my casting I notice one of the guys near me catches a pretty good size whiting. Most of the whiting I have ever caught on Indian Point Pier are no bigger than something you would want to use for bait, either whole or cut up. It looks to me like he is going to throw it back so I quickly speak up, "If you don't want that I do." He says "OK" and drops it on the deck. One of his buddies pulls up a stringer with a dozen or so large whiting and asks if I would like these, "I say yes of course, cause I have one reason I go fishing and that reason is ,"I like to eat fresh fish." Now I have more that enough for my wife and I so it looks like my neighbors are going to be eating fresh fish also. I quickly abandon my feeble attempt I start cleaning the dozen or so I already have and the four guys fishing near me now have a job, catch as many whiting as they can before I finish cleaning the bunch I already have. Well, it does not take me much time to finish the ones I already have since I am pretty good at cleaning fish. If fact there was a couple years back in the late 80's where I cleaned fish for 'Deep Sea Headquarters" when Jeff and Mary Ann went off on their well needed month long vacation between Thanksgiving and New Years Day. In the short time it has taken me to clean the dozen or so another small pile of whiting is waiting for me upon my return. I quickly load these in my bucket, say my goodbyes and head toward the cleaning station nearest the beach so I will not be tempted to keep any more "Bull Whiting" during their "RUN." to catch something and attend to the job at hand, "Get to cleaning a mess of whiting."
1-17-13
At Horace Caldwell Pier, anglers have been catching a bunch of whiting and a few redfish and black drum, according to Matt Antonel.
1-18-13
Pretty good north to south current today on PINS - I ran down to Mansfield and back. Water was pretty much the same everywhere, cleared as the day went on. Lots of grass that I assume got flushed out of the bay when the tide started dropping. By no means unfishable, but kind of a pain. No birds and no bait. Lots of whiting, but slow otherwise, at least at the 3 or 4 places I tried. Tide was just about slack all day.
1-18-13
Fished SBH from late morning to about 4PM. For the first few hours The only bait lost was to seagulls attacking the shrimp on the tailgate. Between Dale and I, we had 5 poles out with various baits in various distances and nada. About 2PM tides change and so did the catching. I wound up catching 11 whiting but that was about it. Only poles touched were those with shrimp/fishbites. Cut baits of various types were not touched. Weather was nice and water was great, as was the company.
1-19-20, 2013
Made it easily to the 25 saturday afternoon and then all the way to the jetties the next morning. Driving was fantastic!!!! Kept a pile of BIG whiting and a couple of small pomps. I bet I could have filled my truck bed up with those whiting!
Ya! It was. We had the same results minus the pomps this afternoon around 10 miles down. We just filleted them as we went and grilled them up right there on the beach. I love fresh whiting!
1-24-13
Matt Antonell said folks visiting Horace Caldwell Pier have been getting into some whiting, pompano, redfish, black drum and sheepshead. Sandra Fudge at Woody’s Sports Center said Island Queen anglers have been catching sheepshead, redfish and sand trout.
1-31-13
Jeff Miller said things have been hopping at Horace Caldwell Pier.
“We’ve seen sheepshead galore down here, mixed in with some whiting and a couple of little sharks,” Miller said. Most waterfront Port Aransas businesses lately have been reporting catches of black drum in the bays, in the surf and off the jetties. That includes Fisherman’s Wharf, Deep Sea Headquarters and Woody’s Sports Center.
1-22-13
Why is the fishing so slow out at the pier lately? I haven't even got a bite the past three times I've been out there.
2-1-13 Slow south of Bob Hall
2-2-13
Got my first line in the surf about 0745 this morning. First fish = hardhead. Picked up some small whiting but action was slow until about 1000. At that point I had to go from four rods to two. The action got that fast. Now mind you it was mostly whiting but they where good ones. Picked up one real nice pomp. and a couple of dink ones but that was it on pomps.
Water was nice and clear and no grass to speak of. Ended fishing at 1130 with one pomp, and 10 whiting.
2-3-13
Fished for a little while this afternoon and made stops at the 6&10mm's. Pomps were there, but the action was slowww. Weed wasn't a problem and the water was nice and green. Managed 5 pomps and a handful of whiting in a couple hours then headed home.
2-7-13
Windy conditions limited offshore trips this week, but anglers fishing in the surf and off various local piers had good luck catching whiting and sheepshead. Bonnethead shark and pompano also were hooked off the piers. Matt Antonelle of Horace Caldwell Pier said fishermen have hooked whit ing, pompano, sheepshead, bonnethead shark and a couple of redfish using both live and dead shrimp and mullet. Sandra Fudge at Woody’s Sports Center said bay guides have been catching sheepshead and black drum in the bays, off the jetties and off the pier at Roberts Point Park. In the surf, anglers hooked a good number of whiting.
2-8-13
We hadn't had much luck in the surf for the last 3 weeks dues to the cold water. Me and RayRod decided to give it a whirl since the water got up to 63 degrees at Bob Hall Pier Weather station. We didn't want to drive too far without knowing if we might get skunked so we fished South of Bob Hall Pier next to a washout. When we got there at 0900 the tide was semi low and rough and a greyish color with NNE wind and North to south current.... Very foggy condition also. Didn't play around with any baits except the dead shrimp/fishbite combo. Used DCD3 rigs from Breakaway Tackle on Roddfield road. Waded out about 50 feet and casted my heart out. Reached what looked like the 2nd gut barely.... Low and behold the rodd started bouncing and reeled in a pomp.. Nice fat one too... Thought this is odd.. I guess all the little ones grew up in 4 weeks or so... Set out 3 rods and got after it... Ended up with 9 large Pomps, a five gallon bucket of medium to bull sized whitings and a gaftop. The tide came in all day too... The weed wasn't as bad as it looked on the beach.. There were millions of "Man of Wars" from dime size to football size.. Nerf footballs... Said hi to Colin and met his lady friend also. All in all it was a great day and we were blessed to be on da beach no how!!!
2-10-13
Port Aransas area report for all you folks who want to get into some pomps. My son, his friend and I fished today on Horace Caldwell pier and tore into em! The whiting bite was great on fish bites with hooks just barely tipped with shrimp. The pomps hit the same thing. We ended up with 30 wihiting averaging 14" or better and 7 pomps several of which went over 20" No weed and no crowd.........what a great day! Hint do not fish too deep as they were all from the second gut back to the beach. I love my whiting patties
2-10-13
Mary finally got back from her Caribbean cruise and we spent the day together SBH. After hemming and hawing about whether to go or not, we finallywent out about 10AM when winds subsided somewhat.
Put out 3 rods. 2 with shrimp/fishbites and one with cut whiting. 2 of the rods were active most of the day. Caught a bunch of whiting and 2 pomps.
2-14-13 Valentines 14pomps and 6 whiting pins. The other had shrimp/fishbites combo. On it I caught 13 pomps and a half dozen whiting.
2-14-13
Sandra Fudge, wi th Woody’s Sports Center, said bay guides have been coming back with sheepshead, black drum and speckled trout. Anglers have been hooking sheepshead and black drum at Roberts Point Park and whiting in the surf, Fudge said. Folks fishing at Horace Caldwell Pier have been catching pompano, whiting, sheepshead and a few redfish, according to Matt Antonell, who works at the Keepers shop on the pier
2-15-13
Saw the swell forecast and left the house at 4:30am on 02/15/13. Stopped off at Cos-Way(Sponsor of Corpus Fishing) for some bait.
Turned on to the beach at North Pins and was greeted with flat glass water and little to no wind. Fishing was really tough with no bites. Saw horse and finger mullet working the surf...The water temp was suppose to be 64* but felt a lot colder. Fished my way north with no luck. Sapo joined me and was experiencing the same thing. We decided to head over to Mustang.
Got to Mustang to found clearer water and more life. First cast, double on the Whiting. Pretty much was the deal till this Pomp showed up.. Caught on Fish Bites and Shrimp in the 2nd gut. Pomp was 5 lbs
2-17-13 big Pompano and big whiting at bob hall
2-21-13
In the surf, anglers caught pompano and black drum. Some large gafftop were caught in the evenings off the piers, and Keehlisen said a few flounder and sheepshead were hooked off the south jetty. Matt Antonelle at Horace Caldwell Pier said anglers caught redfish, whiting, sheepshead and a few pompano using both live and dead mullet and shrimp as well as dead squid.
2-23-13
Caught half a dozen each pomp and whiting around the 17 on saturday. It was slow at first but the sun came out after lunch and the bite picked up
2-27-13
only other things i saw caught in those 2 evening were sheepshead, pompano, a bull red and whiting but it was pretty slow
2-28-13
There have been reports this week that trout are starting to show up along the jetties, along with the usual catches recently of sheepshead and gafftop. According to reports, a few redfish have been hooked as well. At Horace Caldwell Pier, Matt Antonell said anglers fishing from the pier caught whiting, sheepshead and a few redfish using both live and dead shrimp and mullet.
3-2-13
Some nice pomps
3-3-13
We caught a few reds down on PINS Sunday. One was on old frozen mullet, one was on a Gulp, and two were on shrimp/fishbites that were out for pomps. I had cut whiting out but it never got hit. The reds were all caught in the first gut. Big one was only 32 inches. I think we probably had a couple rods too far out. We caught a dozen pomps but several were thrown back for being small. I think we only had three or four whiting all day.
3-07-13
At Horace Caldwell Pier, Rhoni Spirlock said anglers have been catching mostly pompano and whiting, using squid and shrimp for bait.
3-7-13
Escaped from work a little early and went SBH with the wife. One whiting and a hardhead on shrimp and fishbites. Only there for a couple of hours. Guys to the north and south of me seemed to be doing better with some pomps. Birds were working pretty steady in the third. Wish I had a better report, but I guess we all know how that goes.LOL
Went out for a quick attempt in the surf on Thursday near the Newport Dunes G.C.. Water was cloudy green and surf above average. I picked up 7 pomps, a few whiting, and one hardhead in about an hour. The beach was packed but I found myself a slot. I'm not looking forward to the spring break hoards arriving this weekend!
3-7-8, 2013
Well I'm finally home. Was out at Caldwell pier from 8pm yesterday to 12:15pm today. It was slow and the outgoing tide plus dolphins didn't help. Caught about a dozen gafftop averaging around 20inches, 3 pup sharks, about half a dozen whiting, and a few hardheads. One of the pup sharks was about a 40inch bull shark that put up a good fight on my 6'6" heavy action rod. Another pup shark was maybe 18" spinner shark and the third was probably a 36" sharpnose or finetooth. It was pretty empty out there, water temp was probably around 62-63 according to a couple of surfers. Action was slow but that didn't bother me, I still had fun and had enough adventure to last me through spring break cause you won't find my butt out that way until spring break is over, lol.
3-8-13
After leaving the eye doctor this morning I didn't feel like going home. Mary would probably have a bunch of honey-dos for me. lol. Took a trip SBH to check things out. Water was about as off colored as yesterday but rougher. I had Rabbits pole with me with fishbites. I stopped in various places. Drank a beer and caught a couple pomps. Moved; drank another beer and caught 2 whiting.
Stopped and talked to a couple from Montana. They were using ghost shrimp for bait by the "bowl". Didn't get their names but here is the young lady with her catch. She has a nice stringer of pomps.
3-9-13
Water - chocolate milk
Bait - went to South Padre
Winds - like a mofo
Pompano - could only manage 6 in the pinch between MM15-20
Also landed 2 Bull Whiting - atleast 16-18" or so

Made our annual trip down on Monday evening for a couple of days of heaven. Beautiful sunset Monday evening with light northerly winds to usher us in. Driving was great and stopped about sunset in the 40's. After some bacon and eggs with good camp coffee first cast was made and had a nice 26 inch red on the beach. 5 minutes later a nice oversize of 32 gave a great fight to be admired and released to fight again someday. Pomps showed up and we had a blast with them for the next couple of hours. This scene played on pretty much all day. Around 2:00 buddy caught a nice 4 foot shark and had a blast taking a photo and releasing her back to mother ocean. Ii was about 100 yards north of him at the time and hooked by biggest red to date. A 44 inch beauty that was a bunch of fun as well. CPR and back to the gene pool for her as well. i never have seen such a good looking fat girl on the beach as I did Tuesday. Surf and turf for supper with fried potatoes made a great end to the day. Wind picked up a bit and around 10:30 when we fired the grill up for a midnight snack of bratwurst we thought Wednesday might not be as good. Sometime around 0200 or so the wind layed and switched back to the north. Awoke Wednesday to slack wind and even better water than the day before. We caught even more Pomps and a couple of more reds before breaking camp and heading back to the real world. It was good to see Cap't Billy driving down the beach and enjoying retirement. My 2 trips that I had with him a couple of years ago seem to pay off over and over. thanks Cap't

At Horace Caldwell Pier, Matt Antonelle said anglers have been catching black drum, some pompano, whiting and sheepshead and a lot of black tip and bonnethead sharks. A few redfish also have been hooked. On the pier, Antonelle said they are using dead bait including cut mullet, squid and shrimp.

Got a later start than I wanted today but those who have teens know how hard it is getting them out of bed early during Spring break, especially after a late night coming in from San Antonio. Went down to about the 3 on PINS. Set up 3 rods, 2 with shrimp/FB and the other with cut bait. The later never got touched. Within minutes Micah pulls in his first pomp. 7 pomps and 14 whiting

Had a great day on the sand. The driving conditions were very good and even saw some cars go by me past the 28mm. The water is tea colored with blue in the 3rd to 4 gut. I saw alot of bait in the 3rd gut with some birds working. Little to no bait in the wade gut.
I managed 19 pompano in the medium to small range, two 25" reds, and a few whiting. There were quite a few hard heads and a stingray caught during the tide changes when the water quit moving. I also got to play with a couple of sharks that got to keep some circle hooks.

Went down pins Friday to meet a friend from out of town. Long story short we caught tons of reds, 1 jack, a few pompano, 1 smack and several very pregnant black tips in the 5-6ft range. Early this morning a king went airborne just past the third bar.Let me add a little more detail to clear this up a bit. Reds, pomp, whiting and smack were all caught Friday afternoon during daylight hours and the sharks and jack were caught between dark and 4am Sat. we stayed until noon Saturday but didn't catch a thing during daylight hours Sat.
Everything was caught in the wade and first guts
Use fishbites and shrimp to catch pomp and whiting.
Use the pomp and whiting to catch reds and sharks.
I was at various locations between the 25 and 50, just slow down and read the surf.

Hey guys sorry for not updating, I had NO service at all on the beach. I will have a pretty good video to share in the upcoming weeks as I had two cameras, one the go pro on my head so I got some GREAT action shots of fighting fish.
Overall the fishing was on fire, driving conditions were great as I made it all the way to the 60mile mark and back in 2 wheel drive (during low tide)
I caught as many whiting and pompano as a guy could handle, big ones too, well for these type of fish anyways. I had a couple whiting that I had to second guess if they were rat reds or not, thats how big they were. Only a handfull of hardheads the entire week. I also got one slot red (23.5), for some reason I thought the slot was 24-28 so I let him go (first trip back to texas in almost 5 years, should have triple checked regs I know). I got two big bull reds both well over 40", and then my red fish rigs started getting bit off left and right so i knew it was time for the shark fishing.
I got 4 total sharks landed, with at least that many hitting, making initial runs and then not coming back, or breaking me off. I got one almost 4ft on a medium action 9ft rod with a diawa saltist 30 series, that was ALOT of fun! the larger one came off of the pen 4/0 and a heavy action 6fter.
Both big bull reds came off of a diawa sha20, on a LDX rod from breakawayusa.com Nick at breakaway is a great guy, love to share and teach you surf casting / fishing, so if you guys are ever in the area look him up.

Started off a bit windy with Stained and dirty water.
Took live shrimp and found Sheepshead around the pillings.
We caught our limit but only kept a few for the fryer.
Saw a few Pomps, plenty of Bonnet nose, 1- 5'4'' Black tip and a few smaller ones. Wind started to get rowdy so we decided to leave, but prolly go back tomarrow as I did notice cleaner water that was getting closer thru the day. Waiting on them Kings!
Thanks! CK. The spanish are down on PINS so the kings ought to be close.

Hit the sand around 8:30 with a buddy from work and my clan. Driving was a 2/10 but it was nice to see the crowd had cleared out. Ran into zia at the 15 and he said nothing was biting and he was headed North. Got in the 20s and decided to stop bc the water looked a little greener. Caught plenty of whiting, NO POMPONO, and a couple hardheads. Yaked 4 baits out and all 4 got picked up. Ended the day with a 5' BT and a 40" sharpnose? Intrestingly, while yaking out my last bait (the one that got the 5 footer) I saw at least 2 sharks on the 3rd bar right before i dropped it. Im wondering if they were following the bait that had washed off the back of the yak. By the time I had gotten back to the beach after that exhausting paddle, she was already on the line. Sky cleared from 11:30-3:00 and then the fog rolled in THICK! The wind was never an issue and neither was the weed/Current! I

Mary and I went to PINS today and I had a line in the water by 7:35. 3 hours and 3 whiting later we started heading north. Was supposed to be 90 degrees and light winds and sunny. Quite the contrary. When we headed home about 12:30 sun never did make an appearance and surf was up and winds were brisk.
At about the 8mm saw hightides. He went north and we caught a few more whiting.
Went SBH on the way back home. Driving was terrible there. After 3-4 more whiting and a few pomps we headed toward Packery. Stopped by the bridge. nothing happening there. Another fisherman I talked to said that yesterday evening he had a limit of reds in 30 min. Nothing today. That area is TRASHY! Wish people would pick up after themselves.
Filleted the pomps and whiting for kokopelli. He was a happy lab.

I went to the PINS this morning not sure what to expect. Some 8 miles past the blacktop I ran into Zia. He told me he had been farther South and that all he had gotten were a few Whitings. With that information, I decided I would head back North for about 1/2 mile. I caught 2 Pomps and no more, so I decided I would go home. As soon as I could get a signal, I called my wife and told her I was heading home. She said she was out shopping and wouldn't be home for a while. That's all I needed to try it one more time. I was very close to the black top when I stopped. A few cast later and I had landed 7 Pomps, a 22" Red, a Sheephead, and 2 large Whitings. Threw back some Whitings and a Bonnethead shark. The shrimp I used was from HEB. I didn't use fishbites. I just wanted to see if it would work without them. I guess when they're biting they'll hit anything. While there, I saw this Heron feeding.
3-19-13
My wife and i decided to try BHP for sheepies despite the dirty water conditions and not so beautiful day. The only thing we saw caught were bonnetheads by the dozens and a few whiting and heardheads. here is one of the many...
3-19-13
We fillet them and save until we have enough for a fish fry. When the water is warmer I will catch 25-50 keeper whiting a day in the wade gut or just past the 1st sandbar. How much are you feeding your sharks? Lol
3-19-13
Yesterday I went to the PINS again. I tried several areas and had no luck. I went to the exact same area where I had caught the fish in this report and this time I had two buddys with me. We didn't do as well as I did the day before, but we got 26" Red, 1 Pomp, 4 Sheephead, and several Whitings. The water was a little dirty and there was a bit more weed than the day before. I think I'll take a break from fishing today.

I decided to take a day off and try the surf last Monday since the Spring Break was over. Got to the beach around 1030. Started at the North Sticks and worked my North.. Actually only stopped one time at the beginning of Kleberg County. I casted out a LDX with Penn Squall and usual's setup .DCD3 dead shrimp/fishbites. Some weed far out with current. Tried in the first gut and bam, Pomps. Set out two more rods and started getting multiple bites of Pomps-Black Drum=Whiting-Bonnet nose- hard heads & one 32 inch Redfish(released). I was by myself in the fog having a blast.. Ended up with 15 large whitings all full of eggs, ten Pomps some full of eggs and a keeper black drum. I let the hardheads and the over size Red geaux free!!! I also tested out my swimming pool thermometer and the water was 70 degrees.....
3-21-13
I went to Port A jetty this morning. A fair amount of people were there but not too crowded. So I set up near the 3rd gut and fished some lazy dead shrimp for a while. 2 nice whiting were all I managed. There were some fish busting the top now and then so I was hopeful but nothing else. I'll give the credit to the guy next to me who came out there to throw a spoon for landing the first smack. Once I changed to artificial it was on! I landed 7 smacks in an hour the biggest about 21". I was surprised they had arrived that early. Posted at 8 pm

At Woody’s Sports Center, Sharon Keehlisen said redfish catches are slowing down, and more speckled trout are showing up. Keehlisen said customers on the Island Queen have been nailing large sound trout, lots of whiting and some black drum.
Bay guides have been getting into redfish, black drum, sheepshead and speckled trout, plus a few flounder, Keehlisen said. Folks have been catching gafftop from the south jetty and quite a few pompano in the surf, she said.
Anglers fishing from Horace Caldwell Pier have been catching a lot of of bonnet head shark, a few blacktip shark, a lot of whiting, a few croaker and some black drum and red drum, according to Matt Antonell, who works at the store on the pier.

Using shrimp with fishbites and cut up whiting we caught a total of 3 real good size pomps, 1 28" black tip, and a small hammerhead....and tons and tons of whiting....some real good size.

Went to PINS this morn and fog was thick. Stopped at about the 8 because driving was bumpy and hard to see debris until on top of it. Fished there about 30 min. with nothing. Went to about the 18 went fog thinned out some. Put one rod out and put it in holder. By the time I grabbed my other one to put out, the first one was loaded with weed. Tried here for 15 min and gave up and headed back north. About the 13 beach looked cleaner but weed was worse.
Stopprd just north of 10 and it was very fishable. Deployed 3rods. 1 with fb/shrimp and the others with cut mullet. Wound up with 3pomps, a dozen whiting and a 29.5" red all on the fb/shrimp combo. Caught a 40" blacktip on cut mullet.

Hey guys,
Well....finally made it out to PINS in my Tacoma. We made it out to the 6.7MM...woohoo..!! I was trying for 7MM since that is my lucky number but the sand was getting soft so I decided not to push it. That was a great looking spot anyways.
My little brother and his son Ethan and niece Esabia joined him. We had a blast. Using shrimp with fishbites and cut up whiting we caught a total of 3 real good size pomps, 1 28" black tip, and a small hammerhead....and tons and tons of whiting....some real good size.
We practiced CPR on all of them except for a few whiting for cut bait.
3-25-13
After opening ceremonies for Ingleside little league my oldest son Hunter and I headed for pins to get him his first shark. I decided to only take stuff for casted baits since it was going to be a little rough for kayaking baits and all we really needed was a blacktip this trip anyway. We got to the 20s around 5pm and found a nice little pinch to fish for the night. We started making bait and it didn't take but a few min to get all the whiting we would need. I put two rods out baited with whiting chunks and as expected the blacktips played.
3-27-13
No sargassum to speak of on PINS until about 2pm. Water was rough and sandy green. Driving was decent. Caught all the big bull whiting we could stand and picked up 3 reds at 19.5", 22", and 22". Had a great time with my sons and some friends from out of town.

“We had a good run on Spanish mackerel this week,” said Jeff Miller, who runs the Keepers shop on Horace Caldwell Pier. “They were taking them out by the bucket full.” At Woody’s Sports Center, Therisha Moreno said they’ve been hearing about the Spanish mackerel, too.
“Yesterday morning and afternoon, there were schools of them hitting the (south) jetty,” Moreno said, speaking of Thursday, March 28.

Took a friend and his daughter out this morning for a little PINS action from 8 till noon. Made our way to about the 17 and driving was firm but BUMPY. Not much changed from 2 days ago and the weed although present wasn't a hassle. Catches of the day were pompano, bull whiting, and a feisty blacktip that took a whole whiting. Sheepies were nowhere to be found today.

An angler on Horace Caldwell Pier hooked a five-and-half foot blacktip on Wednesday, April 3, according to Blake Wallingsford at Horace Caldwell Pier.
“I was surprised,” Wallingsford said. “He wheeled it right off.”
Folks at the pier also recently have been catching pompano and whiting, Wallingsford said.

With Friday looking like it would be the last day before the south breeze started howling I rounded the guys and headed for the beach . Got on the sand around 6:30 am to find a low tide so driving was great. Made it to the 20 mile marker in no time and set out our first baits just in time for the sunrise. Threw shrimp/fishbites in the first gut, didn't get any hits in the short time we had before lines would be fouled by weed. Tried a little longer with nothing so we decided to head further south . Stopped at the 40 to find even more weed so we decided to go back north and stopped at a good looking spot ( minus the weed) around the 30 and decided to set up whether we would be able to fish or be forced to just hang out. Now we at least start catching some whiting. I say forget the weed and yak out a ray I brought from home out on my 9/0.
After that it would just be all whiting the rest of the day. Water color was a decent green , surprisingly there was almost no manowar , saw a few birds working but not much turned out to be a decent day despite the weed. Till next time see y'all on the sand !

Wyatt Hickman at Fisherman’s Wharf said anglers on a 12-hour offshore trip Tuesday hauled in vermillion and lane snapper, grouper, kingfish and 40 or 50 Atlantic sharpnose shark.
Bay guides have been returning with redfish, sheepshead, black drum and a bunch of trout, Hickman said.
North jetty anglers have been catching numerous trout and a lot of Spanish mackerel, Hickman said. Tarpon also have been seen around the north jetty, he said.
“Lots of redfish and black drum” Keehlisen said. “Sheepshead are starting to slow down a bit, but in the last couple of days, speckled trout have been showing up.”
One guide came back the other day with a bunch of trout, including two that were 25 inches long and one that measured 27 inches.
Anglers also have been catching black drum at the south jetty, gafftop from piers in town, Black drum and pompano in the surf and redfish in the flats, Keehlisen said.
The action has been good lately at Horace Caldwell Pier.
“Looks like people are catching blacktip and hammerhead sharks left and right really easily right now,” Blake Wallingsford said late this afternoon, Friday, April 12. A woman on the pier also caught a 50-inch red drum today, said Wallingsford, who works at Keepers, a store on the pier.

got out there around 9 water was nice, clear with no weed around. no mullet to be seen. Plenty of slot reds were caught in first and second gut, bulls here and there at the t. Game warden made a round at about 1200 and cleared half the pier, saw couple guys get tickets.I personally cant fish due to a broken wrist, so the ol lady was runnin the show, we had a 5 ft blacktip circleing the slides that were out and shur enough he finds the whiting head that i had on bottom on my smallest rod. She made quick work of him and we had him on deck. Shortly after a boat ran about 100yrds from the t and cut a couple of rods off.( has happned twice this weekend according to others).

A great time was had by all including my bro-in-law. Got to the beach around 730pm Friday in order to prepare for the next morning fishing expo. Set up camp around the 10mm or so and went to wet some lines. Started of with a lot of whiting and hardheads at the beginning. Mando, my sons friend tagged along for the adventure and ended to the night with the only red(20") of the night. Which was released.
The next morning was none stop red/black and blue action!! Only fished from 7am-12pm and ended up with atleast 12 reds between 21-27". We kept 8 and released the rest. Had a great time and heard no screaming

Wife and I hit PINS yesterday afternoon...got to the 5 mile sign about 1230. Driving was rough, and a recent back injury kept us from wanting to bounce around in our jeep, so we stopped there.
First cast netted a smallish whiting on shrimp and fish bites. I cut it up and promptly put a nice hunk up against the 3rd sand bar.
Meanwhile, we caught and released several small whiting.
The water was an 8.5/10 for clarity. Sea weed was prevalent, but came in intermittently, and was fishable.
About 330 PM, we got into some BIG whiting. We caught and released 10 BIG, I mean 16-20" FAT whiting. Yeah, I know good to eat but we already have all we need in the freezer from a recent 'meat haul' I made in Louisiana.
About 345 PM, I had something grab that chunk of whiting and HAUL A! I was hoping for a blacktip or something to put some cool pics on our facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/pinspals), but it dropped the bait.
I promptly rebaited and shortly after that, landed a nice fat bluefish...also released...I don't trust east coast types when they tell me those are good to eat.

We were looking for Pomps, as about this time last year, I absolutely KILLED the Pomps doing the same thing...and we found some...well, TWO for the day but we saw other folk about 1/2 way down the pier bringing them in with regularity: We arrived at BHP shortly after 7 AM, and already, it was ON! We saw S'macks hitting the deck left and right about 3/4 way down the pier and on the T head.
We were armed with a quart of live shrimp from Clem's and spinning gear with popping corks. We weren't there 2 minutes and Kim already had a nice S'mack coming in. Check this out...first fish of the day: 6-7 lb smacks. Massacre

Blake Wallingsford at Horace Caldwell Pier said anglers there have been catching a variety of small shark, including hammerheads. They’ve also been hooking hardhead, whiting and pompano.

At Horace Caldwell Pier, Blake Wallingsford reported folks have been reeling in trout, Atlantic sharpnose and bonnet head shark and a few redfish.
5-16-13
At Horace Caldwell Pier, Blake Wallingsford said anglers have been catching a lot of small Atlantic sharpnose and blacktip shark. A woman also caught a blue runner, and an angler’s line was broken by what was believed to be a sizeable ling, Wallingsford said.

Hey guys.....
Went out to PINS Saturday morning and found her looking great...the drive was great...no weeds in the water what so ever...it was beautiful.
Went to about to the 21mm or so.
Didnt see any bait in the water.
Using shrimp and fish bites...I caught a few small hardheads....and some whiting....which I used as cut bait.
And using that....I caught this baby.....she went 40" and about 18lbs. What a great fish to battle. My personal best there at PINS.
She went back in the water after a few pics.

Today we went to South Padre Island to fish on the surf. Took Beach Access #5. We don't have 4 wheel drive so we were concerned as to how the beach was to drive on. Well, no worries mate! The sand is packed almost to the dunes due to the high tides. Luckily for us the tide was going out and there was lots of room to pass anyone coming or going. Went north about .7 mile and parked. Got our gear set up and before we could set the rod in it's holder the tip is bending. Two Whiting at a time!! Again and again and again. The fish went crazy until the tide started to come in and the bite abruptly stopped. It was time to go home and watch the NASCAR race.
At the cleaning station we counted the fish and the total for about an hour and half was 23 Whiting and 1 big Croaker. I don't know how many we threw back because they were too small including a Pompano.

Was at the end of the jetty early am and was just soo foggy that you can only see about 20 yards. It cleared about 1 pm. The water is clearing up green, hoping for the pompano run. Had fun with the Spanish Mackerel, had my limit of 15 pcs by 2 pm. There is a bunch of ball jellyfish at the end of the jetty so there would be some spade fish soon.
11-29-30, 2013
Went down thursday afternoon and came off today around noon. Made it to the 18ish and made our camp and never left. Fished for just a little bit that evening and caught 1 red about 35".
Friday was one of those special days that I will relive a lot!!! Started out kind of slow but got better and better! I caught fish till I was wore out! I caught a bunch of bull reds! Biggest was a pair of 40"s! A 37" , a couple of 35"s, and 5 or 6 smaller ones with 2 in the slot. Also caught some black drum. The biggest of those was a 40" 32 lb big ugly! That dude about kicked my butt!!! Then there was the whiting, and occasional sheepshead and croaker! All were in the first gut. Used the fishbite/shrimp combo and a little mullet I had brought with me. I was WORE OUT by dark and slept like a baby that night with those waves in the background! Life was good!
Fished till around 11 this morning. Was a lot slower but did manage a nice 27" red, a 25" black drum, and some good whiting. Packed up and headed off with a good haul of fillets!
11-29-13 Few Black Drum PINS
I picked up some shrimp that turned out to be mush so we stuck with fishbites until I brought in a whiting for cutbait. Water clarity was a little dissapointing and the tide was high with a strong side current. The tide was really rising a lot, I had to move the truck twice. Even so we managed four keeper size black drum and called it a day by 1pm.
12-2-13
Went to the 17-18 area of PINS. Driving great. Weather great. Fished incoming tide from 0900 to 1330. Nothing, had fish bites/shrimp and cut bait in water. Nothing would even take the shrimp. Mainly fished first gut. Beer and tacos were good though!
12-5-13
Better day today although most were on the small side. Kept about 40 whiting between the three of us and threw back a few dozen more. Not one pompano or catfish.
12-9-13 All I caught was whiting. At the jetty. Water was more green compared to chocolate the days before.
12-17-13 530 pm
OK, we went fishing today on the SPI surf. Got on at Beach access #5 and drove a half mile or so north. The surf was beautiful, very little weed, hardly any current and 1' waves made our time there enjoyable. Final total of Whiting kept was 9 and they were nice size too all caught on fishbites.
12-17-13
Water, waves, driving all very good - but no pomps.
Drove down PINS to the 35 in 2WD. Caught a few whiting and hardheads, then a 35" red. Tried again at the 38 - more whiting and hardheads. Finally tried at the 40 - couldn't lose a bait.
Water pretty clear, one row of 1-foot waves, little weed, tide way out, light wind from north to northeast. Wound up cleaning a dozen whiting. Everything bit on Fishn'Strips & peeled dead shrimp.
12-18-13 446 pm
Well what a nice day on the beach at South Padre Island. It was sunny and warm, the surf was almost flat. There was no current and no weeds and the water clarity was clear.
Went up the beach(north)about 3 1/2 miles from entrance 5 and set up the lines with fish bites and cut mullet. For the next 3 hours, we caught 14 whiting and I was impressed with the large size.
12-17-13
I spent two days out on PINS during the last window (17-18thish?). Beach was a desert. Plenty of hardheads. Whiting showed up in the late evenings and early mornings.

Folks are only just now starting to come back to Horace Caldwell Pier after many days of chilly weather. Blake Wallingsford said he so far has heard only about some catches of hardhead, but he added that he expects to be getting reports of more diverse catches soon. Wallingsford works at Keepers, a shop on
the pier.

Back to fishing, a couple days ago I watched a group of guys fill a cooler of "Bull Whiting" at the Port Aransas south jetty. They were fishing in the channel 50 yards or so west of the surf line. They started biting as soon as the current started in around 4 PM
12-23-13 Whiting every cast on a pier at marker 37 with shrimp fishbite combo

Anglers on Horace Caldwell Pier have been hooking hardhead and whiting, said Blake Wallingsford, who works at Keepers, a shop on the pier.

Yesterday was our first nice day in a long time, I spent most of it, fishing in the Shrimpboat docks...not even a bite!! Tried everything on the menu and NOTHING! At night I first tried a free flowing live shrimp then under a cork and after an hour, my shrimp finally died...without incident!!
Where are all the fish? This weather has me homebound and when I get a nice day to go, no fish. UGH

Recent cold weather has been keeping anglers away from Horace Caldwell Pier, but a warming trend Saturday could change that.

Don't normally call the start of a pomp window until the surf has been forecast to be less than 2 feet for at least a day, letting the sand settle, and the waves are then predicted to remain lower than 2 feet during the window. Forecasts for surf are 2-4 feet through the weekend.
