Gulf beachfront - Water clarity is improving along area beaches. But as of late this week, fishing remained slow. A few whiting and reds were caught this week along the National Seashore. It was Feb 26th last year when the water cleared up and the big Macs were slamming for a couple weeks. I have been watching that web cam daily, but all I see is mud past the "T". Are the whiting big enough to keep? 2-27-07 Went down to about the 7 or 8 mm about 5:30 pm, lots of grass washed up plus could see huge areas of it out in the surf. Also the most man of wars washed up I have ever seen, hundreds of them, even little ones you could only see on the sand, not in the water. Caught lots of whiting, most big enough but my wife threw them all back because she caught all of them. Water was real clear. As dusk arrived so did mosquitoes, so many that we didn't even attempt to break out the bug spray but made a quick exit that any military commander would have been proud of the spped at which we packed up and was moving out of the area. 2-28-07 11 am. Fished south of Bob Hall pier at the 244 marker. Caught 32 smacks in 2 hrs. They were feeding in the 2 nd. gut, just looked like a feeding frenzy. Used a silver spoon, 3/4 oz. , 20 lb. steel leader, 15 lb. test, what a blast. Left 'em hitting. Good fishing to all, longhorn. Must be 27th? Time was between 9 am and 11 am. Started out quite foggy then started to clear. During the fog the mac's were hitting the spoon as fast as you could reel, but when it started to clear they dropped down and had to start reeling a mite slower. good luck, longhorn 2-28-07 10 pm I have been killing them on BHP for 3 days, Tues. was the best and biggest fish. I was surprised to see the early run of Sp. macs starting when the water is only 65 deg, but had a blast. The good part is that there is no under sized, most are 18-27"s. Nothing else is biting on BHP though. A lady told me the big whiting were biting on Sun. They don't even mind you using a wire leader they're so hungry. I used some 27 lb test single strand plastic coated leader and only lost 2 Mannolures in two days. They loved that silver "Gotcha plug" too. 3-1-07
Fishermen in Roberts Point Park used sea lice to lure black drum, said Sharon Keehlisen of Woody's Sports Center. Speckled trout were caught near Mud Island. Redfish were caught on mullet in East Flats and live shrimp drew reds near Hog Island. Sheepshead are abundant off the south jetty. 3-2-07
I headed out to Packery for a couple of hours to soak some shrimp and to find some Sheepies. No such luck. It may have been due to the huge swells coming in sets. Man those were great surfing waves which was suprising considering the calm winds. The water was deep green too.I did see plenty of Spanish Mackerel around though most appeared to be on the small side. The good news was the sargassum was not bad at all so die hard shark fishermen and long rodders might have a chance on this end of the beach. 3-2-07

Made it out to the 10mm late on Saturday. Didn't have much time to fish. Had to run in the soft sand most of the way do to the high tide. a lot of weed and Jellyfish on the beach. Had to set up camp and get the meal ready. It sure is different when you get on the beach with wife,three kids and two dogs. After getting things set up the wind was blowing pretty good 15-20 with high gusts. Got the LDX Breakaway ready for its first launch.... First cast was right in the secound gut. Nick, that is one nice rod!!! Loads up great. Didn't feel any recoil on the follow-through. I will be down this week to get the HDX now... As for the fishing, Whiting were bitting great till the sun went down. After that it was all Hardheads . 3-7-07
Sheepshead and Spanish mackerel are at the jetties. I went out for about an hour this morning and sheepshead are here. I saw one caught about every three minutes. The Spanish mackerel were thick on the surf side and that made my day. I brought my fly rod and had a blast. I only caught 6 Spanish, but if you bring a spinning rod or a bait caster you can catch them every cast. 3-8-07
I went fishing for Spanish Mackerel on the eighth, and I caught one on every other cast for about an hour. The water was unbelievably clear and my polarised sunglasses were a tool I'm glad I didn't leave at home. I was standing on a tall rock on the surf side and I could see the bottom 25 yards out. After releasing about my 20th Spanish Mackerel I saw a Jack Cravel about three feet in front of me. I thought it must be a fluke but was happy to see a Jack this early in the year. I have always wanted to land a Jack on my fly rod, but this wouldn't be the one. He was gone before I even thought about casting. 3-9-07

Went out yesterday to beat the Spring Breakers. Found a nice area around 7 miles south of BHP. Caught some good size Whiting(20). Weed was rolling in the first and secound gut. If you waited 10 minutes it would pass. Water was clear.Used Fish Bites and Shrimp. Picked up my new HDX. What a rod!!! Thanks Nick! One the way back(around 5:30pm), I stop and talk to a gentlemen coming in from the surf. He was holding a good size Smack. He was fishing about 2 miles south of BHP. I watched the surf and saw Smacks jumping out of the water in the secound gut. Drove down 200 yards from him and grabbed my rod and went in. Here is the result. They were over all over 24" Be safe on the beach this Spring Break.......Big smacks, There were MACS in the second gut and plenty of Whiting. 3-15-07
Great fishing was reported for the past week, both offshore and inshore. Jay Jones from the Pier House at Horace Caldwell Pier reported seeing ling at the end of the pier this week. Lucky anglers bagged sheepshead, Spanish mackerel and pompano. 3-17-07 Went down to the cut saturday driving was slow and bumpy going and coming. Lots of seaweed on the beach both on the shore and huge matts of it coming in as well making it impossible to fish the long rods. We did manage a few bull whiting as we made a few stops here and there. I managed to pick up a couple of sheepies at the jetties and lost a couple more nice ones that spit the hook as they got near the rocks. Saw a guy bring in a couple of nice spanish macs as well. Sunday the surf was alot rougher than it had been and still our friend the weed was around no matter which direction u went up the beach. We ended up hitting the packery Jetty to finish off with a couple more sheephead for the box. As always it was a blast and cant wait to get down till next time. 3-18-07 Well spring break is over and the temperature is slowly rising which should make for some better fishing in the days to come. With the temperature around 68 at night and 75 in the day and the water temperature in the mid 60s and on the rise the trout and Reds should start moving into their springtime areas. The flats have been producing a mixture of Reds in Trout on top water baits and live shrimp. The Black drum have been good off the piers and the sheepshead have been good off the jetties. The Jack Cravel and Spanish Mackerel have been good off the jetties and in the surf 3-22-07

Spring is here and the fishing is fantastic. The weather is overcast and water is beautiful. The place to catch fish is the jetties. The fish have been thick this week on the jetties in both the surf and channel. You would think it’s the 4th of July this week with fishermen wall to wall on the jetties. It has been nonstop fishing with fishermen catching Spanish mackerel, sheepshead, red drum, black drum, and Pompano. Fishermen at Roberts Point and Station Street piers have reported nice catches of sheepshead, red drum, and black drum. The flats have been producing a mixture of Reds in Trout. 3-29-07
Ling were caught at Horace Caldwell Pier using crab and shrimp reported Luci Krause from the Pier House. Lots of Spanish mackerel were caught along with blacktip sharks. Whiting were caught and anglers used whiting to catch redfish. Pompano were caught using shrimp. Trout and shark are being caught in the surf, and the surfside of the south jetty gave up limits of sheepshead, said Sharon Keehlisen of Woody's Sports Center. Black drum are being caught near Ingleside. Fishermen are catching redfish around Mud Island, and Spanish mackerel and a few kingfish are being caught at the end of the jetties. Port Aransas guide Alex Porter caught and released a four-foot black drum. 3-30-07, maybe 29 I went to BH at 5:30 today and stayed until 7:30. I almost did not walk out becasue it was so rough. I caught 7-8 spanish with a few around 25"'s or so. It was rought and a ton of weed but the smacks are there. I caught mine skippiing lures across the top to stay out of the weed. 3-31-07 Gulf beachfront - Packery Channel jetties have produced a few fish, but most catches have come from west of the jetties in channels and basins, often early and late or at night. At Bob Hall Pier, anglers caught a few small bonnethead and blacktip sharks and reds this week, mostly during the day. Nightime trout were caught off the pier too. Surf fishing was difficult in high winds this week along area beaches. A few Spanish mackerel, whiting and reds were caught along Padre Island National Seashore. 4-5-07
Blacktip sharks, bonnethead sharks, whiting and ling were caught at Horace Caldwell Pier reported Luci Krause from the Pier House. The biggest catch was a 37-inch redfish caught Sunday, April 1. Noon to 8 p.m. was the best time for fishing last week, Krause said. Anglers used whiting and shrimp to catch redfish and shark. Pompano were caught using shrimp. 4-6-07

This weekends weather forecast is your typical April showers bring May flowers with cool weather and a prediction of showers, but the weather men have been known to be wrong before and we can hope. Even though the weather did not cooperate the fishing this last week was good on the North and South Jetties in Port A. The Spanish mackerel and sheephead have been thick on the jetties along with large red drum, black drum and a few trout. Roberts Point and Station Street piers are still producing some nice catches of sheepshead, red drum, and black drum. Amberjack, grouper, pompano, jackfish and wahoo are still being caught offshore. There’s been some great fishing the past few weeks and it should only get better in the weeks to come. 4-12-07

Started looking at Bob Hall and drove south on the beach. Ran across some really good water about 4 miles down. A 50 yard stretch of the beach where there was a big secound gut. Little waves breaking. Semi clear(tan) water, current was going South and fishable.

Bay fishing has been good even with windy weather. Offshore fishing has been hit and miss, depending on the wind. Several redfish measuring 23 to 28-inches, lots of pompano, speckled trout, whiting and bonnethead sharks were caught at Horace Caldwell Pier reported Luci Krause from the Pier House. Limits of sheepshead also were caught last week. Shrimp, squid and mullet were the baits used. 4-19-07
Went to SPI yesterday morning. Met a guy catching pomps at about the 4 mile marker. I went to little shell and only caught a couple of whiting and then the hardheads moved in. Yaked one bait out past the surf but no takers. Thanks to the whole community and Mr. Billy Sandifer, the beach looked better than I have seen it since the 60s. Yes, I remember the sixties. I went this morning. While the surf is flat the water is very murky. I saw nothing but harheads and a few small bonnets caught. I tried for smacks, no signs of them. Tried some fresh peeled shrimp for some late season pomps, not bites. Left at 10:00am 4-21-07

The jetties have been producing sheepshead, jackfish, redfish, drum, trout, Spanish mackerel, and whiting. Fishermen on Horace Colwell Pier reported catching whiting, black drum, trout, redfish, and sheepshead. Trout and Reds have been good at night under the lights on the piers. The East Flats and San Jose Island have been producing redfish, drum and a few trout. 4-24-07
went to the bhp today , very windy and a lot of grass, did catch two jacks,there were a few small bonniet sharks and a few whiting, no reds and no bait. saw old man al first time this year 80 + and still fishing theres still hope for me lol. talked to two guys leaving the pier around 6 am fished all night a few small sharks see you all on thurday david and nancy 4-26-07 Horace Caldwell Pier said just about anytime except 3 to 8 p.m. is a good time to go fishing. Anglers caught two five-foot blacktip sharks and one fivefoot spinner shark in the last week. Also, lots of whiting, speckled trout, redfish and pompano are taking the bait. And speaking of bait, the baits of choice are fresh dead shrimp, perch and squid. Wet a line from early in the morning to about mid-afternoon, then hit it again from 8 p.m. to midnight for the best catches, Krause said. 4-28-07

Luci Krause from the Pier House on Horace Caldwell Pier said lots of speckled trout, some of them trophy trout 28-inches long, were caught, along with a five-foot and a four-foot blacktip shark last week. Also, a few redfish, Atlantic sharpnose shark and gafftop were taking the bait. The baits of choice was frozen shrimp and mullet. Best time to catch was between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., Krause said. 5-5-07

The report from the Pier House on Horace Caldwell Pier by Paul Molina listed a lot of 24-28-inch bonnethead sharks, bull reds, speckled trout, averaging 20 inches long, and red drum were caught last week. Late afternoon and evening were good for shark catching, and late night was better for the redfish. Dead bait was used most often. 5-17-07 Adam Williams from the Pier House on Horace Caldwell Pier said two 4-foot blacktip sharks and a 4-foot hammerhead shark were caught. Squid and cut bait lured redfish and trout as well as the shark. 5-24-07 Bonnethead sharks, speckled trout, hardheads and whiting were caught last week, said Adam Williams from the Pier House on Horace Caldwell Pier. Early morning and early evening seemed most productive. Baits used were squid and shrimp. 5-31-07 The rain seemed to dilute the water in the surf, Adam Williams from the Pier House on Horace Caldwell Pier reported. This led to smaller fish caught, he said. Speckled trout, pompano and whiting were the major catches. Squid was most used for bait. 6-7-07 A 5-foot jackfish and a 6-foot blacktip shark were the headliners from the Pier House on Horace Caldwell Pier, reported Luci Krause. The shark was caught on mullet. Speckled trout, pompano, redfish and whiting were caught using shrimp for bait. 6-14-07 Sharks, redfish up to 28-inches, pompano and whiting were caught reported Luci Krause from the Pier House on Horace Caldwell Pier. Right around 4 p.m., the reds come running and more were caught then. Mullet and squid were baits used. 6-15-07 Tide was way high this morning, and driving sucked, especially in the stretch of high road you're left with from about the 19 to the 23; that stretch is soft, deep, and full of enough dips and humps that going over 15 mph meant bottoming out. The water's edge was worse; deep dead weed and some of it rotting beneath the surface. Numerous spots seen where some had stuck, and you can bet more will be if the tide doesn't drop this weekend. Now the good news. Although we went to the upper 30s after lunch, we'd have done better to stay at our first stop where one gut disappeared into the bank at the 18. My first 2 casts on the Ambassadeur 7000C Nick sold me were pomps, and I think the third was, too, but the leader was cut off right at the swivel on the way in. C.H. caught a 3-foot bonnet-nose right about then, so that suggests a culprit. We boxed 10 pomps to 41/2 lbs and 26 whiting. I also caught another Irish pompano, but it was way smaller than the record one. Everything bit on peeled shrimp atop shrimp & crab Fishn'Strips in pink, green and so old they were brown colors. All but a few of the smaller whiting came from that hole at the 18. Extremely long casts there usually resulted in skippies, so we shortened up and caught keepers. Can't say if we were in the middle between bars because the water was pretty sandy. 6-21-07

Redfish are running, said Carl Davis of Woody's Sports Center. Anglers are catching limits of bull and slot reds in the bays, off the piers and jetties and in the surf. Pier fishermen are catching trout, and a few flounder are being caught. Sharks are being caught in the channel. Over-sized reds are being caught on the Island Queen night trips. Day catches include Spanish mackerel, small shark, slots and a few specks. Snapper continues to be the main offshore catch. 10-26-07
Loaded 5lbs of Billings' freshly frozen/thawed brown shrimp (yesterday's catch; the live stuff was still on the boat) @ $4/lb this morning and headed down PINS. Tried every few miles from the 18 to just past the 40. Water pretty clear and low wave activity, wind slightly offshore from the NW at 5 mph and dropping until noon. A little weed on the bottom in the first gut, but none over the second bar. Most bites near or over the second bar on fresh shrimp and Fishn'Strips. Finger mullet were abundant, but we didn't mess with them. C.H., Richard, ccbobber and I boxed 4 pomps around 3 1/2 lbs, 4 black drum from 3 to 6 lbs, 7 slot reds, and 37 whiting. Released one 29" red. Wind was beginning to shift and increase when we started back @ 2pm. I'd say tomorrow would be a great day again for reds, black drum and whiting even if the waves are a little tougher than today's. 11-1-07
Last weekend, the big catches were popano and redfish, reported Luci Krause of the Pier House on Horace Caldwell Pier. Both species were caught on either live or dead shrimp and redfish also were caught on mullet. Catches also included lots of blacktip sharks and one 7-foot bull shark using mullet and other cut bait. 11-4-07
I donated a trip down the beach fishing with David Sikes and I back at the CCA Banquet. To my pleasant surprise someone actually (Allen Samuels Chevrolet )bought it for 650 dollars !  Yesterday was the day we went. David and I had a great time fishing with George and Kyle. The water was beautiful with just a few weeds mainly dead stuff from the 33 north. Bait was spotty and we tried a couple of spots tossing live mullet on short rods. David suggested we just toss some shrimp and fishbites to get rid of the skunk. Somewhere south of the Nic we tossed one rod over the bar and instantly got a fat whitiing. The next cast we got a nice pompano. We ended up with 9 pomps to 3 and a half pounds. We also caught a 27 inch blacktip on a shrimp and fishbite combo and lots of hardheads too. Nickaway and Surfgirl were down and had a few bluefish, reds and small sharks. On the way in we ran into some large Skipjacks and had four on at once. We tried a couple of more spots for reds on the way in but the weed made fishing pretty tough. All of the chewed up weed in the wade gut got caught in most of the rigs making it tough.

Lots of Spanish mackerel were caught on live shrimp last weekend, Luci Krause of the Pier House on Horace Caldwell Pier said. Some Atlantic sharpnose sharks and blacktip sharks ranging between 2 and 5.5-feet were reeled in using mostly mullet and cut bait. A couple of red drum about 25 to 27-inches were caught on mullet. 11-15-07
Woody's Sports Center, with a 10-pounder brought in last week. Redfish were caught fishing in the sandy holes of the flats. Speckled trout were caught near the wreck in the Lydia Ann Channel. Sandra Fudge of Woody's Sports Center said a huge redfish had moved in, swimming just off their dock. This store will be open half a day on the holiday. Vermilion snapper, amberjack, ling and small shark were brought in from offshore. Spanish mackerel, redfish, sheepshead and gafftop were caught off the jetties. Reds and flounder were caught in the bays. Anglers on the Island Queen reeled in bull reds, gafftop, sand trout and whiting. 11-29-07
The Island Queen out of Woody's Sports Center reported fishermen were catching redfish, gafftop and sheepshead, said Sandra Fudge. In the bay, black drum, reds and sheepshead were caught. Off the jetties, flounder, sheepshead, pompano and speckled trout were caught. Offshore, small shark and tuna were caught. 11-29-07 PINS 11 pomps and a load of whiting. Breakaway 11-30-07 Anglers caught a few reds, pompano and Spanish mackerel off Bob Hall Pier late this week. The surf-fishing was pretty good before the front. Anglers were catching small and mid-size sharks, redfish, pompano and plenty of whiting. Driving remains easy along most of the National Seashore. Redfish continue to come off Bob Hall Pier lately, with a few drum, lots of whiting and a few pompano and nighttime trout. 12-1-07 The weather man changed the forecast Friday night to 3 footers , down from the 3 to 5 predicted. I called my dad to see if he wanted to make a pompano run and he did. Of course when I woke up Saturday it was windy but I had promised to take him down so we went anyway. The water remained clear in spite of being about 5 rows at 3 feet. We ran into Saltydog and Lorna around the 17 and they said they had been getting a few large Whiting and that the grass up on the high tide line was not too bad. We headed down a way and set up shop but only got small Whiting on every cast so we headed down near the 20 and ran into Maxwell who had four or five Pomps and some nice Whiting. We tossed out there with him and dad got a nice keeper Pomp and some Whiting. It was pretty slow but it was good to hit the sand. I did have a nice run on Whiting head but a nice tail whack from a shark cut off my 80lb shock leader. We caught quite a few small Whiting, a juvenile Pomp and one Bluefish in addition to those we kept. 12-4-07 Lots of whting south of bob hall ----

Response 7am on 7th. 12-6-8, 2007 My brother and I managed a trip down the beach. We ended up near the Mansfield jetties and pretty much fished within site of the rocks. The water was pretty clear and there was a lot of finger mullet around. Thursday we had a double hook-up on some jacks and managed a couple of slot reds and a keeper trout towards evening. We CPR'ed a bull red the next night, but picture came out a little fuzzy. The majority of activity Thurs, Fri, and into Sat morning consisted of smacks, small sharks, and blues which kept us busy tying on leaders. They even went through 80lb mono. The window for the reds and trout was very small - early in the morning and at or near dark for a short time. I guess all the other predator fish kept them away during the day. 12-7-8, 2007 Tons of whiting Bob Hall -- Note from trash heap PINS is a long-casting fishery for pomps, by and large. It's not as though there aren't pomps in close, since I have seen quite a few come out of the first gut, but for some reason the bigger pomps are consistently way out. It could have something to do with the water being clearer out there, but I think it has more to do with a lack of competition from schools of whiting, which cruise the first gut. As anyone who's thrown a cast net will tell you, the water near shore is loaded with young-of-the-year pomps, so they don't mind competing with the whiting. I also catch a ton of really big whiting over the second bar while looking for pomps, so I don't think competetion alone explains why the big PINS pomps are usually so hard to reach. I wish they weren't so I could use lighter tackle and enjoy their fight more. My brother in Navarre, Florida, east of Pensacola Bay, speaks of a neighbor who sight casts with jigs for pomps from piers. No details on the jigs or the other gear the neighbor employs. When the hardheads and other bait-steallers were thick, we've experimented at PINS with plastic lures stuck on the hooks of our usual double-drop leaders. The best lure (unless you count Fishn'Strips as a "lure") was a white, 2-inch, soft plastic grub with a stubby flat tail. Guess to a fish it looked like a sand flea washing around in the waves. Lots of things would bite it, including hardheads, but it would occasionally get pomps fairly consistently. The pomps quit taking it, however, once the tail was chewed off. 12-10-07 Great report big pomps last week. 12-13-07

Matt Dillon, C.H. Givens, Richard Gonzalez and I stopped first just after sunrise near PINS MP17 to try a deep, wide gut. Water was clear, with a bit of weed from the Laguna gumming up the lines, and the waves in the first gut were a bit over the top of my already leaky waders. Richard and C. H. immediately began catching pomps, but Matt and I were getting more big whiting than pomps. I got tired of this situation, so I moved myself and Matt about to MP 18 where the second gut was narrower and the first gut a little more wadeable. I proceeded to catch 10 pomps in 10 casts before missing a fish. C.H. and Richard caught up with us and began to do the same. We left around 12:15 with both boxes full, keeping 25 large whiting and 78 pomps. C.H. also released a 40-inch red and a small blacktip. I emailed the pix of C.H. fighting and landing his red and of all the Ziplocs full of fillets to Tyler and Nickaway because I hate the hassle of posting the pix myself. Ask one of them politely and I bet they'll post 'em. We have, compared to most coasts, almost no astronomical tides, and much of the time the wind pushes the water around more than the one- to two-foot tidal change locally. Low tides are mainly an advantage to driving and seeing the structure to target for pomps, and the only thing the tidal movement seems to affect re the pomp bite is the bite's location. In other words, the intensity of the bite is not affected, but the bite may move from atop or to one side of the bar. If they're ripping on the inside or on top but the tide begins to go out and they quit , cast over the bar to see if they've begun feeding out there where the waves may now be exposing the prey. If the tide is coming in and the bite stops, cast to the inside of where they were previously biting. Tyler and I agreed last year the pomps hang around all year, but pomp fishing conditions (windows) are scarcer after the winter solstice. Of course, when the sargasum comes in it doesn't matter to long rodders how pretty the water and waves are. Incidently, the waves offshore are not so favorable now (5 feet at Buoy 42020), but the NWS now predicts they'll fall back to 2 0r 3 feet later today and Friday. Hence, the pomp window should remain open a while longer. 12-20-07
Fisherman's Wharf, said Jan Burns. Catching has been really good on the north jetty, according to anglers using the Jetty Boat. Lots of trout, redfish and sheepshead have been caught. This dock will close early Christmas Eve and be closed Christmas Day. 12-21-07 4 pm mustve been around the 1st of December 3 wks ago the pomps were biting night time at BHP. I caught a few nice keepers. Some years ago I caught them at night in the month of March...thought maybe they were starving to death to feed at nite. Bad fishing weather has been sporadic, and bay catching still remains constant. Bay fishing out of Dolphin Dock has been super, reported Sandy Martin. Lots of trout, both speckled and sand, have been caught along with whiting. Offshore catches included dorado, tuna, shark and kingfish. 12-27-07

First stop was about the 15 mm for about an hour. Picked up a few small whiting for bait but nothing else so we headed further south to about 3 miles past the 20 mm. Driving got very bad so we turned around and went back to the 20. About 11:30 We set up right in front of the 20mm and put out 4 rods. We caught whiting and pompano until 2:30. Final tally kept was 6 pompano and 19 whiting. We released another 6 small pompano and many whiting. 12-31

got to the 20mm at 3pm and killed the pomps till dark. nothing but pomps bitting and a few whitting here and there. Got them on shrimp in the first gut. Got a total 15 pompano and left them bitting as the sun went down. 12-31-07
When I saw the New Years Eve weather forecast was basically perfect, I convinced Dad meet me in Port A Sunday night for a trip down PINS Monday morning. We hit the sand about 8:30. No wind at all, two rows and 56 degrees meant the forecast was right. First stop was about the 15 mm for about an hour. Picked up a few small whiting for bait but nothing else so we headed further south to about 3 miles past the 20 mm. Driving got very bad so we turned around and went back to the 20. About 11:30 We set up right in front of the 20mm and put out 4 rods. We caught whiting and pompano until 2:30. Final tally kept was 6 pompano and 19 whiting. We released another 6 small pompano and many whiting. those whitting are huge, good haul guys. 1-3-08
Even with the cold and wind, catching reports were much better for last week, according to the docks and individual fishermen. Kingfish and trout were the biggest hits. 1-3-5, 2008 My brothers and I managed to get onto some reds, drum and a few pomps this past trip. We ended up fishing in the upper 50s as we found the water cleaner down south with little grass. There were jellyfish the entire length of the beach. Back in San Antonio the sting was still present, and I caught some when washing the truck. 1-4-08
Gulf beachfront -- Pompano remained in the surf this week, mostly north of the 20-mile marker on Padre Island National Seashore. Beach driving has been good, but floating weed is a problem for long-casters in spots. Anglers also caught a reds, drum and whiting in the surf this week. In the bays, it has been redfish, black drum and sheepshead. Those fishing out of Fisherman's Wharf, according to John McNatt, are catching kingfish, Atlantic sharpnose shark, vermilion snapper and shark. For many fishermen, last week took a dive as far as fishing went. Several reports were a much different story from the spike the week before. Some people taking trips on head boats went so far as to suggest firing boat captains because so few fish were caught. 2-28-08 It was back to great fishing last week, reported dockworkers. Snapper catches were plentiful in state waters. Kingfish shark and blackfin were caught in good quantities. Snapper and kingfish were caught offshore on boats out of Woody's Sports Center, according to Sharon Keehlisen. The Island Queen led anglers to catches of whiting and big sand trout. Whiting and pompano were caught in the surf, sheepshead and reds off the south jetty and black drum off the J.P. Luby pier in Roberts Point Park. 3-5-08 I got bored yesterday morning and went out to see what it looked like. The pics speak for themselves. I just thought I'd pass it along to those who can't get out or don't live down here. If you fish packery - you sure didn't miss anything yesterday. I saw some dolphins/porposes working the end of the jetties, but was unable to take a good pic of them. Cool to watch though. Only 2 guys fishing, and they didn't have anything. Tide was WAY out. I saw a little bit of weed from around the 15MM to the 20MM. It cleared out after that around Big Shell. I only went as far as the 24MM. The sand was really torn up from around the 16MM to the 20MM in some spots..not exactly sure on the miles. But, if you are 2 wheel drive you may get stuck like a couple of people I saw so be careful. Anyway, caught 1 nice drum that went 22 and lots of whiting that were up to 16. That was about it. Very nice day to be outdoors. Happy Easter!!! 3-21-08

Three of us caught 15 nice pomps, 2 redfish, and some lunker whiting at the 18 MM during the full moon bite on an incoming tide. Pomp bite slowed when the tide went out. All caught on fresh dead shrimp and circle hooks. Pomps caught on inside of the second sand bar. Sorry no pics, but the camera was left at the house. No weed at the 18 MM on Friday, but plenty of weed on Saturday after 2:00 pm. 3-27-08

Pier anglers reported catches of whiting, red drum, black drum, sheepshead, gafftop and ling. It's beginning to look a lot like springtime in Port Aransas. We're just beginning to see a few changes in bay and offshore catches. Sheepshead are still being caught, and lots of Atlantic sharpnose shark, kingfish and snapper were caught offshore, but the appearance of some speckled trout and ling signal the coming of spring 4-12-08 Spring is here and the fish are biting. I have seen reds, trout, sheapshead, and flounder caught off the jetties. I have also heard from a reliable source that Spanish mackerel, jack crevalle, and even a ling have been caught off the jetties. If you haven't figured it out yet, this is a great time of year to fish. 4-17-08 Theresa Hornburg of Barnacle Bill's Pier House, on Horace Caldwell Pier, reported catches of whiting, sheepshead, pompano, bonnet head shark, and some big speckled trout. By all accounts, the speckled trout are in. Where sheepshead dominated bay catches just last month, the speckled trout are now being caught. Redfish, black drum, whiting, gafftop, a few redfish and sand trout are being caught in the bays, according to Gwen Montgomery out of Woody's Sports Center. By all accounts, fishing was great this week in Port Aransas. The opening of snapper season on Sunday, June 1, was hailed by catches of limits offshore. Now that has got to be the dumbest question I have ever heard of. I jumped on that with both feet. Met up with bobber and CH and Jean - funmeter at billings. Put my stuff in CH's truck and we took off. Beautiful morning, light winds and surf but the water was dirty. We drove down to the eighteen mm and started fishing. I caught a couple large whiting and CH pulled in a Huge stingray. We moved back north hoping we could find some clear water but no luck. We stopped several times and fish anyway. Bobber did manage to catch 2 pomps that were to small so he sent them back to grow up. After all was said and done we went back too Billings and used their cleaning table to clean our whiting. We had probably 30 whiting for the day. Turns out our pomp excursion was really a whiting excursion we just were not told about the change ahead of time. 10-02-08 Got off to a bad start when ccbobber lost the 4WD and got stuck near the 17. Things looked worse to the south, so we convinced him to head back. He shouldn't feel so bad, since I got stuck much worse than he in powder on the high road near the 22. C.H., Richard and Matt did most of the digging before they were able to push me back out. Aside from the time I met someone crossing the dune line at Yarborough Pass road, that's the only time I've been stuck in 30 years. Pomps were very scattered on shrimp and Fishn' Strips. We picked up half of our 6 keepers to 3 lbs at about MP 19 1/2, another couple while we were resting at the 22, and another at about the 13 while I was airing the tires back up. Add to that a dozen large whiting and quite a few undersized pomps. 10-10-08
C.H. and I caught most of our 9 pomps and 19 large whiting within sight of the 4WD sign at PINS. Eight of the pomps needed gallon Ziplocs for their filets. We drove as far as about MP 17, but there was a ton of old weed on the bottom as you went south past the 10 and it appeared to be getting worse. 10-21-08
The pomp window was open from the first cast. Dropped a 2-pounder in the box and hoisted the flag Nick gave me yesterday (did you see us waving it at you when we drove by, Nick?). C.H., Mattie, Richard Gonzalez and I boxed 18 pomps to 5 lbs and 48 large whiting using dead shrimp and Fishn' Strips. Water was medium clear, falling tide from sunrise until we left around 1345. A little seagrass and lagoon weed on the bottom, but only a nuisance when reeling in. Lots of finger mullet, but C.H. got no bites on them. Weed wasn't present, but there were loads of finger mullet right in close. 11-1-08 Went out early and stopped about the 7 or so and was really slow so packed up and headed further south a little past the 15 and nailed these babies between about 11 and 1. Pomps. 11-2-08 Bunch of pomps amd Spanish. offshore 11-6-9, 2008 Hit PINS Thursday afternoon. Picked a ridiculous spot at about 23-- that was us in the big GP Medium. As it turns out, Friday was "The Day"-- 9 keeper reds, 2 specs over 20", one nice drum, a jack, a couple of blue fish and more skipjack and whiting than we could count. Saturday was no slouch either (about half of those totals), but the weed that moved in made it a little harder to fish despite the great structure that held its own right in front of us for the weekend. Sunday morning was productive despite the hairy weed that invaded the beach (nailed three reds just before sun-up). The consistent high water, the front, the wind shifts, the structure and the cigars made for the perfect storm 17 keeper reds
Let me put it this way-- we caught three times as many reds as we did Hard Heads in three days of fishing.... the "run," though late, was on. We caught almost everything, even the trout (!!) on cut skipjack (which we were catching in the 24" range all weekend). 11-11-08 Trash Heap Well, better late than never. Took a chance since there was no reply sooner and filled the box with pomps on Tuesday. 11-17-08 I got a quick phone report from my dad yesterday. He fished N packery jetties yesterday from about 10:00-2:00. Caught Spanish Macs and pompano. He was about 50 feet from the end of the jetty. All caught on Maltese Minnow lures. I think he said he came home with 12 keepers. 11-19-08 i know there is NO limit on pompano and whiting and wednesday was to perfect, so i spent that day filling my freezer. 11-20-08 Took a sanity day off work to do some pomp fishing! Got to PINS a little after 8am, stopping a couple of times before finding a decent spot about the 7MM around 9am. Lots and lots of finger mullet in the water. Beach was beautiful. Water was nice early, but got more sloppy and off color as the day went. Water was green to medium bong water... lots of weeds and weed residue. I worked hard and ended up with 9 keeper pomps, 1-2lbs, and 30 large whiting. Left the beach around 4:30pm. I saw a lot of folks caught nothing but weeds. The wade gut and top of the 1st bar were covered... Tip to those folks... You're going to have to get in the water and wade out on top of that 1st sand bar and fish from there. It's work, but that's how you've got to work with that grass. Everything was caught on pink shrimp fishbites, tipped with peeled shrimp. BTW, the water temp today was over 70, not bad for November. I'm off all next week and will be hitting the beach at least a couple days. Good luck all. 11-21-08 Gulf Beachfront -- North Mansfield Jetty and within 500 feet is closed while the channel is being dredged. Pompano and whiting, jacks and mackerel were caught this week. Conditions along area beaches has improved. Packery jetties produced a mix of fish this week, including reds, Spanish mackerel, flounder, mangrove snapper and a few croaker. Bob Hall Pier is closed for repairs, but expected to reopen soon. 11-27-08 Bill Fintel at Barnacle Bill's Pier House on Horace Caldwell Pier said anglers had good luck with the sheepshead, big black drum, bull reds, an occasional flounder, Atlantic sharpnose shark, whiting, gafftop and pompano. Sharon Keehlisen at Woody's Sports Center reported that offshore boats brought in kingfish, a 50-pound wahoo and dorado. Bay guides were catching redfish, lots of pompano at the wells in Corpus Christi Bay and night giggers are bagging limits of flounder. Anglers on the south jetty caught sand trout and speckled trout. Black drum and pompano are being caught by surf anglers. 12-2-08 Yeah right. It was blowing 33 mph Se. Joy Sandifer still caught 12. Don't have to worry about the debris down the beach any more. She had me haul half of it home as "treasures" yesterday. Yard looks like a flea market full of fix er upers. Obvious pompano season is upon us and when conditions allow they are in good supply. I went to pins about 5 miles past the 4 wheel drive sign with my wife kids and parents Saturday. We had a ball catching 9 whiting (the biggest I ever caught or saw) and two keeper black drum. We had a nice fish fry that night. 1-8-09

me and my dad went to pins this mornin..got on the beach around 7 or so. foggy, cold, a little breezy and high surf. the water was a little offcolored, but not to bad. went down to a couple spots between the 20-25 mile markers. not a dang thing until a little after noon. my dad was the champ today, he caught all the fish....except for a couple little whiting. he caught a nice pomp and a fat 37" red. the wind picked up enough to push the fog out, and it really turned out to be a nice day! sun was shinin...fish were bitin and the drink was flowin..

Jim Baima of Collinsville, Ill., and Port Aransas has been limiting out on sheepshead on the north jetty almost daily. He said he catches live ghost shrimp on the beach for bait, and they work great. "It makes no difference to the fish if they (the shrimp) are alive or dead, though," he said. He has also caught plenty of redfish and black drum. Pompano and whiting have been dominating the surf fishing, according to Baima. Hit the beach around Bob Hall and made the turn south about 9. The sky was an unbelievable blue. It looked like one of those mornings you see up in the mountains after a cold front. Driving was 10 out of 10. Tried a couple spots and caught a few whiting on shrimp and fishbites. Made it all the way to the sticks before noon. Caught a couple of whiting and what were beautiful blue skies soon turned cloudy. I also tried cut whiting and frozen mullet but there were no takers. A couple of more whiting and it was time to head out. There were a few sprinkles around as I was packing up and as I drove back up the beach it was almost empty. 1-31-09
Sat morning caught up with Tarzan abouts the 23'ish.. helped him hook a Pompano while he was working his other rod.. he put me to work and brought in his 24 drum while he was enjoying my hospitality of lunch and drink.. he had the day with some fat pomps, 24" drum and bunch of whiting.. we caught some whitings tossed a few in tarzans icechest and some in mine,.., (dont tell him next week where that smell is coming from hid some shrimp in his spare tire) 2-5-09

Gulf Beachfront — Driving is treacherous through deep sand on the National Seashore. And driving can be particularly difficult during high tide. Low tide driving is mostly OK along area beaches. Bob Hall Pier is open but the concession/bait shop is not. Fishing for drum, reds and whiting has been OK with combined natural bait and Fishbites when winds allow. My wife finally got to use the Emcast 6000/10' Emcast rod, and Crossfire 3500/6'6" Exceler spinning combos I bought for her. After stopping for groceries, bait, and a few last minute things we hit the beach just south of the sand pit south of BHP around 12:30. Fishing was slow at first, but started to get good in the afternoon. The kids caught numerous whiting and pompano, some were big and some were small. My son brought his girlfriend along who had never been fishing before, he got her into the action as well landing several whiting and pompano herself. Something rather large hooked onto my son's 542/squidder combo, he had his girlfriend fight it for a few minutes or so before the hook came out just over the first sand bar, we're thinking maybe it was a bullred. My wife on the other hand landed a 28" red on her Emcast, and a nice size pompano on the smaller Crossfire, she also caught several other pompano and grander whiting. 3-10-09
I was just at the south jetty and people were catching lots of Spanish Mackerel on gotcha lures and some other hard lures. You have to use a steel leader because their teeth will cut your mono leader. Port A Outfitters has a box of mirrolures and other lures on sale for $1 a piece. Those lures are perfect for catching those spanish macks. 3-12-09

Went down to about the 18 1/2 with C.H., Richard, Mattie and Bill. First cast into the 2nd gut produced the largest of 10 pomps I boxed. Most were way out in the middle of the gut, but I never put on the waders to reach them. Closer in, it was a fat whiting every cast. Filled the boxes and left before 1 PM. All together, we cleaned 13 pomps, 2 black drum and 92 whiting. Caught everything on fresh dead shrimp and Fishn' Strips.-- lot of old weeds at the 11 caught 2 undersized pomp and two whiting. 3-17-09 BHP The fishing was great Tuesday. Bagged 14 Spanish mackeral by my daughter alone between 9:00 and 11:00 PM. 3-16-21, 2009 Spring break found us with some much needed time off after the beach cleanup. With the weather cooperating unbelievably well, we found ourselves in one of the hottest March bites I’ve seen in a while. On Sunday and Monday we spent most of our time down around the Mansfield channel where we only picked up a few fish. Things really heated up on Tuesday in the deep 50s and this is when we encountered our first Jack Crevale of the year. Water clarity was crystal clear and we started seeing schools of Jack Crevale in the wade gut. Mixed in with the Jacks were some supper sized Spanish Mac’s and several large Sharks. Fishing down south is always exciting but when you can drive along and pick and choose which fish your going to sight cast to, well that’s as good as it gets. Wednesday it got even better and we spent most of the day chasing Jacks with the fly rod and landed six. On the way off the beach in the evenings we found another large concentration on Spanish Mac’s holding up in the high backs between the 18 & 25. This concentration held some smaller fish but was a much larger concentration. Large silver spoons in the 1 ½ to 3 once size fished on wire leader produced most of he action. On the fly, we tried everything in the box before we found what they liked and it turned out, they couldn’t resist a white deer hair clousers with a red head. Finger and pony mullet could be found from the 25 south and seemed to increase in numbers as the week went on. Redfish, Black drum, Pompano and whiting could be found just about everywhere we stopped to soak peeled shrimp & Fish Bites. All in all it was an excellent trip with the biggest Spanish Mac going 4.5 pound. Six of Eleven Jack Crevale caught on a fly rod, two of which went to OZ for bait. And sight casting to over six large Sharks in the wade gut. Also got to see Oz’s 10’ Tiger Shark and the two fine young men successfully release her back to the wild. 3-18-09
I know this is a little late of a report, but the pomp have been active around the north sticks area. As usual, the key to getting them is getting out far enough. Sooner or later I'm going to get a proper surf rod and reel and learn to pendulum cast properly, but my plan B was to just get wet. I actually waded far enough to see pomp in the water at one point, and they were thick. We ended up with 5 nice pomp, one a little smaller and 2 huge whiting. 3-19-09

Got up this morning and the weather was perfect. Threw my rods and tackle into the truck and headed for the pins. Stopped just past the 5mm water was very nice. Forgot my waders so had to get wet. Water was warm. Put on some fishbites and shrimp and started catching pomps and whiting. Kept 6 whiting and 5 pomps figured that was enough for a couple meals and still be able to give my mother some fish too. 3-19-09
went out again today after work armed with a spoon and feelin deadly! hit sopac around 6. the end was packed, but found a spot....smack everywhere....but a little to far out. a couple were caught here and there...but not much goin on besides the usual mess of sheepies.i tried hard, but no luck. so i packed it up and headed in...almost in and thought the surf looked good..maybe a trout or two.....first cast..BANG....a miss. so now im pumped, second cast, hook up! my reel is singin ...fight it for a couple min..thinkin its a monster....only 22" ( i snaged its side) then i caught a 25 incher...then a third, but no net, so when it got up to me..about to grab it..let go and it was gone  a bunch more hits, but only left with 2. good day after work!!!

The weather and fishing don't get too much better than the past week in Port Aransas. Bay anglers fared just as well with big redfish, sheepshead, black drum and trout. There were lots of smiles on the docks and piers. Got up and took the wife and 6 year old to the PINS around the 28 mm. Driving was perfect, my wife even commented that the beach was a smoother drive than the highway coming into the park. There at the entrance the water was still murckey but the farther you went the better the water got. Once setteled I got the rods out and started putting on some fresh dead shrimp in attempt to catch some pomp's. We started catching a few hard heads and one small pup shark. I decided to wade out to the second gut since the water was so clear. As I got to the second gut I noticed a lot of weed floating low on the bottom and walked all the way to chest deep water to cast my lines out. The water was clear enough I could see the bottom at chest deep. No sooner than I got back with the last rod my wife got a pretty good bite and pulled in a 18 inch pomp. By the 12:00 we had to leave with the fish still bitting with a count of 3 sharks all under 20", all were released, 2 hard heads and 6 pomps. I could not imagine it being a more funfilled day other than getting to stay longer next time. 3-29-09
Headed South of Bob Hall yesterday afternoon with the wife to get a line wet in the surf. Ended up a few yards from the sticks. Water looked like bad coffee and the wind was howling. Made a few casts with one of my smaller bait rods but it would load up with Sargassum and trash almost faster than I could reel it back in, so after a little hangin out we called it a day and didnt even bother getting the rest of the rods off the truck. This morning the wife, and I loaded up the truck and we headed down to PINS. We were met with great looking water, small surf and great driving. We set up at around the 21. I rigged up a couple of stingrays and got them out with the yak while the wife stayed on shore and managed the rods. Once the yaked baits were out I relaxed for a bit and the wife hauled in the pomps and whiting. Had no takers on the yaked stingrays or whiting. Had a screamer on my Ambassador 6500 C3 and by the time my wife was able to run to it and get it out of the rod holder the line snapped 3-31-09 Well after freezing in different parts of Texas.. had to get out.. almost didnt make it to the coast.. got iced in Brady wednesday.. If i was going to be freezing might as well be having fun at it.. Thanks to Tarzan was going to meet him at the Y.. BUT NO he was to busy catching ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ's in a warm bed at home.. So while me the Mrs and my fishing buddy trying not to freeze our cajones off.. started off with 5 black drum 15-19 inches.. So round 2... 7 reds 24-28 and one tagged Red at 31.. 13 black drums 18-22.. had the ice chest full to the top.. would of had more, but i was the only one in the group that had waders to hike out to cast into the holes.. WOW I finally hit it with the window open.. it has been a while... but nice when it happens, praise God for great weather and a very productive weekend.. Thought I was going fishing, but didnt, ended up going catching..

. The drive in on the low was easy. When I left from there at high tide it sucked. We caught lots of whiting, one pomp, and one 30" red. I will try and stop you next time I see ya.
Turned out I got spooled and the snap was the line breaking off the spool. Lucky me I just loaded it up with new line last night. I'm guessing it was a big jack from the speed of the run. The run came on the only mullet I managed the whole trip. Later in the afternoon the wind picked up quite a bit which not only made it chilly but the surf picked up too. We packed it up about 4pm and headed back home. It was a great day on the water and we ended up with some pomps and whiting for the table.
