Jews of San Nicandro, The
by John Davis
Read by victor Kateck
This is a wonderful story of how a group of impoverished Italian farmers and artisans were led by a crippled Italian 1st world war veteran to become Jews and ultimately, to emigrate to Israel. Coming from an isolated and desperately poor part os southern Italy, they had to overcome a multitude of challenges to become recognised by the wider Italian Jewish community to survive the Fascist era, the war and it's holocaust and finally to achieve their desire to emigrate to the newly established state. Their story reads like an adventure, but it is true and the author has researched the subject thoroughly as befits a Professor fo Modern Italian History.

Journal 1935-1944 by Mihail Sebastian Read by Jennifer Bower
This intimate journal of a playwright and author living in Romania during the build-up to and outbreak of, the Second World War, and the subsequent occupation of his country by the Russians describes the situation in which the Jews found themselves. Their fears, as Hitler's atrocities first came to their knowledge, threatening their horizons and then becoming a reality within their own country. He narrates how he and others coped in their daily life and how Hitler's anti-Semitic propaganda and political orders resulted in close friends and work colleagues turning against them from one day to the next destroying their lives and hopes for the future. He exposes his own human frailties living under the terrible conditions and the reader experiences with him his daily thoughts and the irritable turmoil of emotions that constantly beset him as a result. What finally emerges from this journal to impress the reader is that even during the moments of deepest despair a glimmer of hope always remains within him.
