It describes very graphically the evolving of communism and it’s brutal effects on the lives of others. The book reflects the appalling conditions inflicted by the prolonged siege of Leningrad, resulting in starvation and death. This is a book of history told at a deeply personal level.

Imposture is the story of the physician to Lord Byron, written as a work of fiction by a teacher colleague of Benjamin Markovits, who was himself living under a false identity. Dr John Polidori, is a young man with literary aspirations and hero worships the poet. He had been dismissed by Lord Byron three years before and returned to London where he is mistaken for Byron by Eliza Esmond as he resembles him. Lies and deception by the Byron-Polidori character and the behaviour of Eliza and her father towards the man whom they believe to be Byron add to the confusion in relationships. Benjamin Markovits writes beautifully detailed descriptions of the past and of people's emotions and innermost thoughts. A most provoking and enjoyable read.
Adam and Rachel have been childhood sweethearts. Now engaged to be married they are comfortable and secure in their extended Jewish family and friends. A life of easy contentment awaits at the heart of the community. Rachel's father Lawrence treats Adam like a son knowing that Adam's father died when he was young. Ellie, Rachel's 22 year-old attractive American cousin arrives to escape from the controversy of her ongoing affair with a famous married art dealer in New York. Adam works as her attorney and is torn between duty and temptation. Ziva, Rachel's 88 year-old grandmother and Adam's widowed mother add interest to the plot. This is an appealing and well-written account of the impact that individuals decisions have on others. This book was the winner of the Costa first novel award. No. 1703 Indian In The Cupboard, Theby Lynne Reid Banks Read by Hilary Michel (1 Cd) The Indian in the Cupboard is about Omri, a boy who is given a small cupboard by his mother for his birthday and his friend gives him a toy plastic Indian figure. Initially Omri is unimpressed by the gifts but he decides to the put the Indian in the cupboard and locks it, the next thing he knows the Indian has come to life and he realizes that anything he puts in the cupboard will come to life once he locks the cupboard and then unlocks it. Omri comes to realize that he has something powerful and he must use the cupboard wisely and not spontaneously. This book teaches us all that there are consequences for actions and we must learn to think before we act on something. An action-packed read, with good characters and a story that moves quickly. Although a children’s book this is equally a good read for adults too.

A quirky, amusing tale, great fun and enjoyable to read.
