I Am Forbidden

by Anouk Markovits

Read by Rita Rosenbaum (1 Cd)

'I Am Forbidden' is the story of two sisters born at the onset of WW2 into a deeply insular, ultra-orthodox Jewish sect. While Mila is content to live within the constraints of this world, Atara is consumed by questions about this type of life as well as the circumstances surrounding the escape of the sect's leader during the war. Forced apart for decades by the rules of the community the two sisters are brought together when a family secret threatens to make pariahs of them all. This book is a powerful portrayal of family, faith and history which takes the reader from pre-war Transylvania to present-day New York, via Paris and England. It is intensely moving, beautifully written and exposes in devastating detail what happens when unwavering love, unyielding law and centuries of tradition collide. Definitely a must-read!

I Married A Communist

by Phillip Roth

Read by Richard Toeman (1 Cd)

This is the story of the rise and fall of Ira Ringold, a big American roughneck who begins life as a teenaged ditch-digger in 1930s Newark. In the 1940s he becomes a big-time radio star, and is destroyed, both as a performer and as a man, in the McCarthy witch hunt in the 1950s. In his heyday as a star and as a zealous bullying supporter of 'progressive' political causes Ira marries Hollywood's beloved silent-film star, Eve Frame. In this story of cruelty, betrayal and revenge, Eve's scandalous bestselling exposé identifies him as 'an American taking his orders from Moscow'. This book is knotted with energy, barely wasting a scene or a word in its crackling velocity it is a truly gripping novel.

Imposture

by Benjamin Markovits Read by Ruth Hill (1 Cd)

Imposture is the story of the physician to Lord Byron, written as a work of fiction by a teacher colleague of Benjamin Markovits, who was himself living under a false identity. Dr John Polidori, is a young man with literary aspirations and hero worships the poet. He had been dismissed by Lord Byron three years before and returned to London where he is mistaken for Byron by Eliza Esmond as he resembles him. Lies and deception by the Byron-Polidori character and the behaviour of Eliza and her father towards the man whom they believe to be Byron add to the confusion in relationships.

Benjamin Markovits writes beautifully detailed descriptions of the past and of people's emotions and innermost thoughts. A most provoking and enjoyable read.

The Indian in the Cupboard is about Omri, a boy who is given a small cupboard by his mother for his birthday and his friend gives him a toy plastic Indian figure. Initially Omri is unimpressed by the gifts but he decides to the put the Indian in the cupboard and locks it, the next thing he knows the Indian has come to life and he realizes that anything he puts in the cupboard will come to life once he locks the cupboard and then unlocks it. Omri comes to realize that he has something powerful and he must use the cupboard wisely and not spontaneously. This book teaches us all that there are consequences for actions and we must learn to think before we act on something. An action-packed read, with good characters and a story that moves quickly. Although a children’s book this is equally a good read for adults too.
