This story spans three generations, Sasha Saunders is the daughter of a Polish Rabbi who abandons the Shletl and wins renown as a Yiddish actress in Warsaw and New York. Her daughter Chloe becomes a Professor of Cassics at Columbia. Chloe's daughter Phoebe grows up to become a mathematician who is drawn to traditional Judaism and the sort of life that her mother and grandmother rejected. No. 1326 Memory Chalet, Theby Tony Judt Read by Victor Kateck (1 Cd) This is a lovely but in many ways sad book. Written as it was by a renowned historian and intellectual dying from a neurological disease which is robbing him slowly of all ability to move and even to speak but leaving his mind as clear as ever. It covers a wide variety of themes ranging from his memories of childhood to his feelings about being a Jew. He was a noted critic of Israelis policies and to as a university don both in England and America. Beautifully written it displays an erudition and use of language that could hardly be bettered. No. 1660 Men Of Convictionby Lionel Ross Read by Clive Roslin A fascinating and gripping novel about three young men all of them released from prison on the same day. They are: Hussein, Wayne and Dovid each have basic, yet strong personalities and goals. Hussein, the Islamic preacher is driven by hate and his overwhelming desire to convert all of Britain into the Islamic Caliphate. Then you have Dovid, a religious Jew, the one time offender who is determined to make an honest success of his life. Finally Wayne, an Irish Catholic and notorious burglar and drug- addict who is determined to make something of his life and remain on the up-and-up and maybe bend a few rules here and there. The action takes place in such contrasting locations as Manchester, Istanbul, Afghanistan, Belfast and a mysterious breakaway Islamic republic. The contemporary background to the plots ensures the airing of such issues as Islamist and Irish terrorism, religious intolerance and drug trading. As the cataclysmic ending approaches, the paths of the three main characters are destined to cross again in an epic and amazing ending.

One wonders what happened to him in his childhood and youth to enable him to dream up these stories full of strangeness, violence and danger - the Holocaust, sexual disfunction and sadistic birthday magicians. This is a mixed bag of stories. The best are really well - told and days later are recalled for the daring high drama and disturbing inventiveness whilst others are much less appealing.
