Preliminary Results


This section reports on the preliminary results of the current research to date. This covers the development of the majority of the first iteration of the system to date.

A number of visualizations to represent the sensor’s values were designed, initially prototyped in Photoshop, and then in OpenGL (which has been since been implemented in Tinmith). Two representations were created to represent corrosion – the Plasma (Figure 5) and Crystal effects (Figure 9) – with two other representations – the Box and Gauge (Figure 10) – used to represent the values of the sensor’s other attributes.



The centre hue of the Plasma’s transparent gradient remains constant, with the size of the gradient varied to indicate the severity recorded at that position and that severe corrosion of a single spot sensor is most likely to also be affecting the areas around it. Red was selected as the most obvious colour to indicate problematic areas.
