Up to episode 21 up right now, and all that's left is the Extra stages and the finale. For those who haven't kept up, I still highly recommend the Extra stages videos...because they are made of fail.

I forgot how difficult those Extra stages are, seriously.

This is a nice short video, only about 10 minutes long...because I cut out forty minutes of footage. Probably not a joke.

The first level in this one is hectic, as Shadow put it, and then there's the sewer maze. I...I can't say that I like the sewer maze very much.

That poundable pillar at 2:50 is tricky, timing your landing between the platforms. But it houses the elusive red coin, as you've probably figured out.

There's also a hidden area in the sky above that first flower if you jump up above the screen there, but I think all you'd get in there are more stars or coins.

The Impossible? Maze has a whole different type of difficulty. Not a "holy s*** so much crap to avoid, I'm going to die" difficulty like the odd # World Extras. But a '"what the hell do I do, and how the hell do I do it?" for half an hour' type of difficulty.

Damnit, I was really hoping that the red coin was somewhere else altogether. I'm going to hate trying to nab that one.

Actually, it could have been a red shy guy carrying one you didn't get to in time past that platform wheel at 3:40 when you hear the sound of it flying away. You never saw it, you were simply close enough to trigger it. I watched another video of someone getting that.

But I swear I've gotten a red from that pillar. Maybe it's a failsafe '21st' red coin.. or I'm thinking of a different level altogether. Now I'll have to play the level again real quick.

One of the comments on that other video, and my test just now confirms it. There are more than 20 possible red coin pick-ups.

This level is a strange case indeed.

A bit late but your post about Distant Worlds ~ Final Fantasy Tribute concert. I pretty much stopped playing FF games after VI, excluding some of the first disc for VII and IX so I don't know anything about the songs performed you mentioned as performed by Susan Calloway. Is there a reason with them that she couldn't have also done the Aria Di Mezzo Carattere? Sure, if it were up to me the entire show would just be VI but Terra's theme seems to be too little. Imagining Maria's part done with an orchestra is incredible. I guess it would probably be something to do with an opera voice but still,

#361 | MacDaddy Mike (tc) | Posted 3/27/2012 11:04:29 PM | message detail | delete | filter | quote

I don't know if Calloway's voice would be well-suited to opera, but I also would have enjoyed more music from VI--though I'm not sure what tracks I'd include.

I think it'd be neat if they did some kind of combination of The Decisive Battle and The Fierce Battle, as both would sound incredible with a full orchestra:

http://youtu.be/lxKb48wvt60
http://youtu.be/SmwSfUqnDvA

Or better yet, a version of the Figaro theme that then slows into the Coin Song:

http://youtu.be/J4_ewaO7SA4

Or just play the first part of the ending, damnit!

http://youtu.be/RvCsHCF-LLo

...yeah, FFVI probably should have gotten more attention. I'm not sure if you'd like it, but I recommend at least giving FFXII a shot. The gameplay is drastically different from the series up to that point, and I really enjoyed the story, characters and setting. It goes between being my favorite FF game to my second favorite behind FFVI, pretty much depending on my mood that day.

Nothing special I'd think. The one in the stump was removed in the GBA port.

5-Extra: A snowy hell if you're trying to get 100%.

6-Extra: You had the right idea at 11:36, to take it real slow. I'd say that one did give you a bit more trouble than it should have. >_>

It makes a nice, long Extra finale, though not nearly as hard as 1, 3 and 5.

Last night I actually went back to get 100% on those two levels I eff'd up on, Extras 3 and 5. That first jump with the spinning platforms in Extra 3 is still the most difficult part of the stage, though I was able to recreate the phase through that wall that I did in one part of the video. Getting all 21 coins doesn't do anything, unfortunately, and you only get one "got them all" sound when you get #20, so I couldn't even look forward to that.

Extra 5 took forever. Just...it just wouldn't end. When I didn't have trouble with the ski part I'd get knocked around by the baseball dudes, and then I'd have fits of sucking at the skiing part for a while. Good god was it all incredibly annoying...but in a fun way!

And there we have it. I'll type up a wrap-up for everything tomorrow, and then that'll be it for me. It's been a hell of a year.

So this is pretty much finished. And I've made inexcusable lack of progress on this and Chrono Cross. I generally play games at my own variable pace. It's why I didn't join in on the forced favorites thing. I bombard myself with games, and end up setting a few aside altogether.

If you haven't played Final Fantasy 9 by now, it would have theoretically been my pick for you, if I had joined and we were paired.

MacDaddy Mike’s “Back of My Hand” Playthrough Wrap-up

Well, that’s been one interesting year. As with my GameCube Send-Off where I didn’t actually finish it all before getting the Wii as planned, I never expected this to take over a year to complete. It was only twenty or so games, right? Then again, I don’t think I ever anticipated my idea to do half of the games through video, but there isn’t much you can do to give people a true feel for short platformers like Ninja Gaiden.

Since the goal of my topic ended up being split in two between text and video, I figure I’d do a separate wrap-up for each, so for the video end of the spectrum I made a list of my Top Ten Favorite Fail Moments of the LP series. These are my ten fondest memories of suckage, though I’m sure some of you could think of others you’d rather put on the list. These are the ones that make me smile the most.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFWRB2HMhFw

The great thing about this playthrough is that I don’t need to do a tier list, because I loved pretty much every game I played (yes, even the ones that made me swear a lot, though the appreciation came slower than others). The only games to disappoint me were Super Mario World, which just isn’t as fun as it used to be and really is a broken game with Yoshi, and Donkey Kong Country, which I never really enjoyed all that much in the past and didn’t care for too much this time. Even Ocarina of Time was mostly spared from my wrath, as I tried my best to focus on the positive aspects of the game instead of its general “eh”-ness.

I’m glad I was able to take some of you through these games with me, even though I think I’m the only one who stuck with Chrono Cross to the end, but it was actually partway through this topic (basically when Bear mentioned that he hadn’t played Tales of Symphonia) that I got the idea for Polas’ Forced Favorites, so I can at least give this topic some credit for spawning another. And, of course, we got a lot of mileage out of making Super Metroid the GotM whenever back, VGMan (whoops, Ultimike now) did his LLG of FFVI here, and I was grateful for all the Pokemania that was going on last summer at the same time that I was having my tournament.

Like I said in my finale video, I hope some of you decide to go back and replay some of those games you thought you knew all too well, as I’m sure one or more will surprise you. I find myself paying more attention to detail when I play games today, and often approaching things from a design perspective, trying to find that invisible hand of the game-maker.

And, of course, some stats, ‘cause why not?

Time-frame of topic: 384 days (1 leap year, 18 days)
Number of videos: 78
Total video time: 27:01:27
Number of posts (at this time): 868
Number of posts by me: 445
Percentage posts by me: 51%
Game-Overs: Too many to count

Hey, that’s all some good stuff right there.

Thanks for everybody for coming along on this with me. I’m not sure if I’ll be using this topic for anything specific after this, and if it looks like it’s gonna die I’m just gonna let it. ‘Been a fun ride, here’s hopin’ the next one’s just as fun.

Sorry, there's a tear in my eye.

I love stats, and I think a low 51% own posts is quite impressive for a play through topic. Well done! And it was a lot of fun to be along for the ride.

Going to watch the Yoshi extra's now and the wrap-up vid.

Great final video!

The respawning boss when playing as Wicket was one of the s***-funniest moments of the entire topic.

No wait, first Star Wars, walking into the pit after finally beating the boss. Inches before the end of the level.

Watched the Extra vids just now, and I'm pretty sure they make me never want to play YI again. Cause I know that when I play it, I'll go for 100% every single time. Game is so awesome. And the little things, like the sound effect for coin 20 or the sound effect for a level-score of 100 points.

#373 | UltiMike08 | Posted 4/3/2012 12:05:21 AM | message detail | filter

Man, those moving platforms in Extra 6 kicked your ass way harder than they ever should have.

Besting yourself in those situations is part of the fun of games as well, I guess.

It seems a bit of a shame to leave the topic more or less finished with this many posts, though. You mentioned Diablo II a couple times. How'd that go?

Myself, JJ and wolfspider have been playing for a couple of months now, and we're in Act 4 on Hell Difficulty now, hopefully to finish it all off tonight. DC has been somewhat managing to keep up with us, but his heart's not in it. I've been playing Necro and doing fairly well on my own, though I can't take damage worth crap and my mercenary actually does most of the killing that's not corpsplosion.

Other than that, I've also decided that I'm going for 100% Titles in Tales of Symphonia again, from scratch, and I'm in my third playthrough now. The first one was my "No Lloyd" playthrough and then the second one was where I focused on all the characters I didn't use in that playthrough. Now I'm playing an all-guy main party on the Kratos path and after that I'm doing an all-girl party with 1/2 exp on to get that title for Lloyd where you have to beat Rodyle with a party lvl total under 145. I've been doing well enough and it's ridiculous how different every playthrough can be (I'm really looking forward to main-ing Sheena next game), but I'm making good progress so far. The cooking titles are the ones that always take the longest, so I'm being good on keeping up with that.

But I thought I'd save any Tales discussion for when Bear starts playing, as I don't want to spoil anything for him or give him any tips that are too useful.

I'm really good at absorbing spoilers without any pain, though. And tips are always welcome.

It's really warming to read, how a single game can do so much for someone. I might be able to feel something like that to, if I didn't have hundreds of untouched games. If only I was poor (or was rich time-wise).
