About VLC The Volusia Literacy Council is a United Way partner agency specializing in one-on-one and small group tutoring of adults who perform literacy skills below the 9th grade level. Students are registered and assessed in order to develop free, customized learning programs conducted by trained volunteer tutors. Our Students Adults with low-level literacy skills face many challenges each day. Simple tasks such as paying bills, applying for employment, or helping their children with their homework can be frightening. Often feeling ashamed and alone, the adults typically try to hide their lack of skills-even from close friends and family. Challenges are different for students who speak English as a Second Language. They are embarrassed to practice their skills in public, do not feel confident to be able to run errands independently, and deeply want to learn and speak English so that they can be more actively engaged in their communities. By helping these adults improve their literacy skills, the Volusia Literacy Council can bring about amazing changes in their quality of life. New opportunities open up for them as parents, employees, and members of their communities. Our Programs Literacy for Adults One-on-one or small group tutoring at local public facilities. Assistance with reading, math, language and daily living skills. Pre-GED/GED study materials available. Workforce and career development. English as a Second Language One-to-one or small group tutoring that provides reading, writing, and conversational English skill development. Family Literacy Through selected PACT kits [Parents and Children Together] parents and children work together to cultivate a love of reading, develop early childhood literacy skills, and reinforce the importance of learning in the home. The Volusia Literacy Council is a partnership of United Way Volusia-Flagler County and Daytona State College.
