Community Mourns Loss Of Local MarineSoldier's Death Ruled AccidentalPOSTED: 3:01 p.m. EST March 28, 2003 UPDATED: 4:02 p.m. EST March 28, 2003 Friends and family of Kevin Nave, a marine born and raised in White Lake Township, are lowering their flags to half-staff, but raising their spirits to honor his memory, Local 4 reported. A sign at Anthony's Pizza & Party Shoppes in White Lake -- where Nave worked for five years during high school and college -- displayed the words, "We will miss you Maj Kevin Nave Thank You". Military officials told Nave's wife that her 36-year-old husband had died in combat, the Marine's cousin Molly McAuliffe said from Nave's Oceanside, Calif., home Thursday night. Nave's death was ruled an accident, but no further details have been released, Local 4 reported. Friends of the soldier told Local 4 that as a teenager, Nave had talked of becoming a Marine and serving his country. "I just can't believe it, but he definitely was a Marine ... that was his whole life," said Ellie Champeau, Nave's former manager at Anthony's. An American flag and a Marine flag are displayed outside the White Lake home where Nave grew up with his two brothers and a sister. Nave graduated in 1985 from Waterford Kettering High School where he was on the school's varsity football and wrestling teams. The flag outside Kettering was lowered to half-staff on Thursday in memory of one of the school's most accomplished alumni. After high school, Nave went to the University of Michigan on an ROTC scholarship. He graduated in 1989 with a degree in political science, family members said. Nave went to Marine officer's school immediately after college, said T.J. McCullough, a high school classmate and ex-Marine. His brother Tony called Kevin a warrior who liked sports and loved being a Marine, Local 4 reported. "He was motivated, focused and driven, but one of the nicest, most easygoing guys you'd ever want to meet," said McCullough. "I know he followed his dream. He was a career Marine." Nave is survived by his wife, Carrie, and two children, Anthony, 6, and Maeve, who reportedly turned 5 on Thursday. He was stationed with his family at Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, Calif. He was with the 1st Marine Division, 5th Marines, 3rd Battalion, according to his brother. The family has declined to comment further, saying they're not ready to speak publicly, Local 4 reported.

Military officials told the wife of Maj. Kevin Nave that her 36-year-old husband had died in combat, the Marine's cousin Molly McAuliffe said from Nave's Oceanside, Calif., home Thursday night. She declined to comment further, saying the family was not ready to speak publicly. Nave's brother, Michael Nave, said the family does not know the circumstances of his death. By early Friday, he was reportedly not listed on the military's tally of soldiers killed in action. Nave is survived by his wife, Carrie, and two children, Anthony, 6, and Maeve, who reportedly turned 5 on Thursday. He was stationed with his family at Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, Calif. He was with the 1st Marine Division, 5th Marines, 3rd Battalion, according to his brother. Besides his wife, children and mother, Nave is survived by father Reno, sister Katie and brothers Michael and Anthony. The Nave family and friends reportedly spent Thursday at the family's White Lake Township home. An American flag hung from the front porch. "We lost Kevin," his mother, Anne Nave, said before declining further comment. Another service member with ties to Michigan is missing in action in Iraq. Army Pvt. Brandon Sloan, 19, and other members of the 507th Army Supply Unit were ambushed near An Nasiriyah, said his mother, Kimberly Sloan of Fraser.
Army Sgt. Michael Pedersen joined the Army right out of high school and was a great father to their 7-year-old daughter, said his wife, Chanel. The couple had attended the same high school before they married in 1997, but had been separated at the time of his death. Pedersen, 26, of Flint, Mich., died in a helicopter crash April 2. "He was a quiet person," Chanel Pedersen said. "A great father. He loved his daughter. He was an excellent soldier."

A few months before he was sent to the Gulf, Sgt. Michael Pedersen, 26, separated from his wife but promised to talk about reconciling when he got back. Pedersen, a crew chief, never got the chance. “It was like a chapter unfinished,” his wife, Chanel Pedersen, told The Atlanta Journal and Constitution. Natives of Flint, Mich., Michael and Chanel started dating when she was 13 and he 15. They attended the same high school in Flint, and he joined the Army immediately after graduation. The Pedersons, who were married in 1997, had a daughter, Destiny, 7. Chanel Pedersen said her husband was a “quiet person.” “He was a great father — he loved his daughter,” she said. “He was an excellent soldier.” After she learned of his death, Chanel Pedersen had her arm tattooed.
