Message From The Inland District Vice President
This is Donna Bagwell in Sandpoint, Idaho. I am currently serving as Vice President for the UMW Inland District.
I urge all United Methodist Women in the Inland District to attend the District Annual Meeting on September 10, 2016, at Fowler United Methodist Church. Not only will we enjoy wonderful fellowship, but we will recognize UMW units for their accomplishments and elect new officers for the coming year. Our keynote speaker, Ann Reinhart, will enlighten us on the effects of climate change, what it is doing to our precious world that God has created, and the role we can take to address this challenge.
The registration information and form are included in this newsletter. I hope to see ALL of you there!

United Methodist Women National Mission Institutions
There are 97 United Methodist Women National Mission Institutions in the United States. They provide direct service to communities, and many also engage in action for justice. There are resources that will help us learn about the United Methodist Women connection to these institutions.  They are the Prayer Calendar available on the e-store: http://www.umwmissionresources.org; United Methodist Women YouTube channel.

www.youtube.com/user/UMWomen; Response Magazine:  October issue - Mission Map; Online Mission Map and Resources: http://www.unitedmethodistwomen.org/nmi and stories about lives being changed at more than 100 National Mission Institutions with photos and profiles www.cokesbury.com/forms/ProductDetail.aspx?pid=646183

So, to get started, I went to the Online Mission Map and clicked at random and found the Friendly Center in Toledo Ohio. Here is what I found when I went to the Friendly Center Web page.
In 1923, with a growing immigrant population in the neighborhood, The Women’s Home Missionary Society of the Methodist Church purchased property to serve as an educational and social center. They called it the “Friendly Center”, “friendly to everyone who used it and central to the community it served”. The Friendly Center has served the residents of “North End” in Toledo, Ohio for many generations, always adapting to the changing needs of its diverse population. As cornerstone and beacon of hope, the Friendly Center Inc. has provided a place to dream, explore options, and combat the despair of poverty for over 90 years.
The Resources that Friendly Center provides to their community are:
Health By Choice, a formal partnership between the Martin Luther King Kitchen for the Poor and The Friendly Center. The partnership was formed to address the health of the community. They provide clients a grocery store-like atmosphere, with products arranged on shelves and in coolers/freezers. Clients are provided a food card as they shop, guiding those to nutritionally balanced selections.
The Closet offers items that often times eat up a household budget; the provision of these items allows families to stretch their limited dollars. The Closet depends on donations from various corporate and community partners and the Friendly Center Women’s Service Guild.
Parent University is a program that provides FREE classes and opportunities for Toledo area parents and caregivers. Parent University has partnered with the Friendly Center to host their cooking classes!
The Menu program helps to fight the issue of hunger in their community and to support local business owners that provide childcare to their children. As a Sponsor of the USDA’s Adult Care Food Program, they help local childcare providers provide healthy meals and snacks to the children. They also assist these Providers with tools to increase their business capacity.

Adult Study Table recognizes the need for adult students to engage in one–on-one tutoring. Many adults cannot enter into the pipeline of workforce development because they have educational barriers . . . these barriers are not always eradicated by the GED model. The Study Table addresses educational barriers and provides neighbors with connections to other resources in the community to provide individual/family stability.
Windows to the World, their Youth Program is under construction with the intent of offering their children the opportunity to explore options within and outside of their neighborhood. The Drop-In Center model no longer meets the needs of their youth. They are struggling socially and academically. The hope to engage them in weekly with identified four to six week learning tracks that will saturate a student in a topic long enough to obtain knowledge and determine if a seed has been planted for future growth.
WOW! This is just one of the 97 mission institutions that we sponsor. Look what they are doing in their community! Now this week, take a few minutes and find another mission institution and see what is happening, and then share that information with your local unit. We can be proud as United Methodist Women to the difference we are making in the lives of women, children and youth around the world.

Inland District Mission U Attendees

UMW Reading Program

Now that the lazy, hazy days of summer are here, I find that many activities draw my attention. I attended both the UMC General Conference in Portland, Oregon in May and the PNW Annual Conference in June. While at Annual Conference I got to purchase I Am Malala, a wonderful book. I could hardly put it down.

Have you attended Mission u? Remember you can count the required reading as part of your books. The topics include:

The Bible and Human Sexuality: Claiming God’s Good Gift,

Climate Justice: Call to Hope and Action

Latin America: Places, Culture and Faith
As our reading year comes to an end, I would like to remind everyone that Marsh Aufenkamp, Conference-Level Program Resources, has set a goal of 455 participation for 2016. Roughly that translates into each unit having one more person complete a plan. She has offered a pie and ice cream social to the units that obtain the goal. Will any of our units be the ones to win?

Please send your completed reading forms to your unit Program Resources office and they will be forwarded to me.

I can be reached by phone, 208-620-0158, e-mail: tweetiword@yahoo.com or snail mail: Linda Hansen 319 E. Knotty Pine Lane, Coeur d’Alene, ID 83815-1800.
Blessings to all,
