Adventurous passengers will love this special excursion that lets you enjoy the scenery of Iceland aboard a special “super truck” jeep. Built to weather exceptionally tough conditions, we will ride these jeeps out to rocky landscapes carved by the forces of nature and time. The excursion begins with a transfer to Nesjavellir Power Plant, which formally opened in 1990 to create the biggest high-temperature field in Iceland and which is now one of the main sources of heat for homes in Reykjavik. From here you will take the gravel road along the lake Thingvallavatn, driving across the lush farmlands of the south through a constantly changing landscape. We will arrive at the birch forests of Trastarlundur where we will stop for a short break before driving on a special jeep track known as “The Thousand Waters”; you will pass a series of rivers, mud banks and streams. Our last stop will be on a hill to take in a final view of the unique Icelandic scenery.

Please note: guiding only in English. This tour is not recommended for guests with walking difficulties, with neck or back problems and to pregnant women. Tour available only during your cruise.

KEF06 – KRYSUVIK GEOTHERMAL FIELD & BLUE LAGOON

Duration: approx. 5 hours

We will leave the port and drive to the enchanting Kleifarvatn Lake, one of the deepest lakes in Iceland, where we will stop briefly to take pictures. Next we will continue to the geothermal fields of Krysuvik to witness the powerful jets of steam that spurt from deep below the earth’s crust; we will admire the solfatara and the multicoloured pools of boiling muds before reaching the bustling village of Grindavik and the Blue Lagoon. The Lagoon owes its existence to the nearby geothermal power plant; the waters of the lagoon remain at a warm 37°-39°C and are rich in minerals and renowned for their healing properties. After viewing the Lagoon we will drive over the lava-covered Reykjanes Peninsula to the outskirts of the little town of Njardvik to visit the newly-built Viking Museum. Here we can admire the “Islendingur” Viking ship, a fully seaworthy replica of an averaged-size Viking vessel which would have carried a crew of 70. Drive back to the pier.

Please note : limited number of guides in languages other than English. Should a tour guide for your language be unavailable, the tour will be provided in English only. Guests will only visit the Blue Lagoon but will not bathe in it.
KEF09 – LET’S GO VOLCANIC

Duration: approx. 6 hours, incl. lunch

Treat yourself to an amazing outing to the rugged volcanic landscape of the Reykjanes peninsula, which is located a short distance to the south of Reykjavik. Safely ensconced in a super-truck, you will first head for Stóra Eldborg, or “big fire city”, a perfectly formed lava ring and crater dating back approx. 3,000 years. An invigorating trek up the steep flanks will reward you with breathtaking views of the lunar-like terrain at the top. A short drive and subsequent walk over uneven mossy ground will then see you go caving in a so-called lava tube, whose nearly undetectable entrance can only be located using GPS. Once you have been issued with a safety helmet and a high-beam torch, your guide will take you into the mysterious depths of the Icelandic underworld. Next up is a visit to the hot springs and fumaroles found at the thermal field of Krysuvík, situated in a fissure zone that crosses Iceland. Lobster soup with freshly baked bread then await you for lunch in the nearby fishing village of Grindavík, after which you will re-board the super-truck for a drive up the mountain that overlooks the famous Blue Lagoon thermal spa before returning to the port.

Please note : limited number of guides in languages other than English. Should a tour guide for your language be unavailable, the tour will be provided in English only. This tour is recommended only for guests with a high fitness level. It is not recommended for pregnant women or for guests who suffer from claustrophobia . Due to the substantial walking, hiking and caving the tour entails, it is classified a grade 4 hike. This tour is available only during your cruise.
