"NewsWrap": An appeals court overturns the 8-year sentences of 9 imprisoned gay Senegalese AIDS educators; Brazil's Grupo Gay da Bahia demands government action to curb the rising tide of queer-ba shing murders there, and the world media spotlight intensifies on the governments of Iraq and the U.S. over escalating murders of gay men in the American-occupied country, while dozens of patrons at a popular gay nightspot in the Ukraine suffer detention and abuse by Kiev police; up to a thousand demonstrators in Dublin protest the Irish government's pending "inferior" civil partnerships bill, while Connecticut state lawmakers and governor formalize their Supreme Court's marriage equality edict, and Nevada's Senate passes a domestic partnership bill, but a New Hampshire Senate committee votes thumbs down on a marriage equality measure; the same New Hampshire panel also rejects a bill to ban bias against transgender people, and a similar measure dies in the Maryland Senate, but Washington's governor signs a bill to add gender identity or expression to that state's hate crimes law; and an anti-gay bar sign doesn't play in Peoria (written by GREG GORDON, with thanks to REX WOCKNER with BILL KELLEY, and reported this week by LEIGH MOORE and MICHELE PLEASANT)
Last time on "This Way Out" we heard how conventional 1950s American housewife Ann Weldy overcame her husband's concerns when she achieved success as a lesbian paperback romance novelist. She became famous as ANN BANNON... and ultimately came out herself. Starting with "ODD GIRL OUT," Ba nnon wrote six lesbian-themed novels from 1957 to 1962 that became known as "THE BEEBO BRINKER CHRONICLES." Our correspondent STEVE PRIDE's conversation with the iconic author concludes this week as Bannon describes Beebo's birth, recalls life in New York's Greenwich Village during that era, and responds to being dubbed "the Queen of Lesbian Pulp Fiction" (with intro/outro music from "Secret Love" by DORIS DAY) [8:29] + "TWO" I.D. by ELLEN DEGENERES (over fading outro music) [www.annbannon.com]
Romance (excerpts from "Take Me On" and "Forty Years" from TOM GOSS' "BACK TO LOVE"), seduction ("LYLAS" and "Swimming" from GRETCHEN PHILLIPS' "I WAS JUST COMFORTING HER"), and commitment ("Courage of Our Convictions" and "I'd Do 'Em All" from JULE CLARK's "CHANGE YOUR MIND") shine as we open this month's "AUDIOFILE" (hosted by CHRIS WILSON & JD DOYLE and written and produced with CHRISTOPHER DAVID TRENTHAM) [www.audiofile.org] more

John Bucchino Interview Singer / Songwriter / Composer Rex Reed has said "If Tennessee Williams was alive and writing tunes he'd be John Bucchino." A catchy quip, but hard to argue with ... John's songs have been recorded by a who's who of the pop and cabaret worlds, artists including Liza Minnelli, Barbara Cook, Judy Collins, Art Garfunkel, Michael Feinstein, Ann Hampton Callaway, Suede, David Campbell, Jimmy Webb, Patti LuPone, and on and on, and his work is a staple in live cabaret venues. Among the numerous awards honoring his music include his musical "It's Only Life" winning the Los Angeles Ovation Award, and his work for the Dreamworks animated film "Joseph, King of Dreams" with the DVD Premiere Award. He wrote the music for the Broadway musical "A Catered Affair," with Harvey Fierstein writing the book (winner of the Drama League Award for Best Musical). His song "Grateful" was used in an award winning children's book, a part of the Julie Andrews Collection. And he's worked for 25 years with Holly Near on her albums and concerts. You'll hear about these projects and his work and friendships with Stephen Schwartz (think "Wicked") and Romanovsky & Phillips. And his only movie role. The Democratic Party controlled U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES passed a bill this week, by almost 75 votes, to add sexual orientation and gender identity to the country's hate-crimes laws. The targeted victim categories of actual or perceived race, color, religion, national origin, gender, or disability would be expanded under the LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT HATE CRIME PREVENTION ACT to include LGBT people. The U.S. Justice Department would also be able to provide financial and other assistance to state and local jurisdictions to investigate and prosecute bias-motivated violence, or take the lead if necessary - especially if local authorities are blinded by the prejudice that prompted the crime. Some G.O.P. Congressmembers voted for the measure, familiarly known as THE MATTHEW SHEPARD ACT, but most argued against it during floor debate - none more egregiously than VIRGINIA FOXX of NORTH CAROLINA [hear her "hoax" allegations]. Matthew's mother JUDY SHEPARD, who was in the House gallery to hear those remarks, spoke with MSNBC news analyst RACHEL MADDOW [hear excerpts from their conversation]. MSNBC news analyst KEITH OLBERMANN names three "Worst Persons in the World" during his weeknight "Countdown" program. Congresswoman Foxx won the dubious top title two nights in a row this week
"TWO" I.D. by DAN MATHEWS (author of "Committed: A Rabble Rouser's Memoir" and Senior Vice President of PETA) [:12] + *About a year ago, literary commentator JANET MASON was really taken with poet CA CONRAD's "Deviant Propulsion," so she couldn't wait to sink her teeth into his latest work: "THE BOOK OF FRANK," published by Chax Press
Long-time activist 0ROBYN OCHS is the editor of the "Bisexual Resource Guide" and the quarterly publication "Bi Women". The main focus of her research, teaching and lecturing is breaking down the binary categories commonly used to define sexuality, gender, and race. The anthology she co-edited "GETTING BI: VOICES OF BISEXUALS AROUND THE WORLD," will see its second English edition released in June, with Spanish and Chinese versions to be published later this year. She discusses all of that with DIXIE TREICHEL and PAT NELSON [from "Fresh Fruit" on KFAI-FM/Minneapolis-St. Paul] (with intro excerpts from a tongue-in-cheek "bi music medley" courtesy of JD DOYLE) more

Newswrap: A Greek court annuls the country's first known same-gender civil marriages, which were performed on the small Aegean island of Tilos last year; a court in Turkey officially allows Lambda Istanbul to continue operating, but the LGBT advocacy group says it still doesn't feel safe, while Lesbians, Gays and Bisexuals of Botswana sues their government over the southern African nation's ban on consensual adult same-gender sex; Moscow officials ban yet another planned LGBT Pride event, but Russian lawmakers reject a bill to criminalize "a homosexual way of life and a homosexual orientation"; Maine Governor John Baldacci signs a marriage equality bill, while LGBT activists await the action of New Hampshire Governor John Lynch on a marriage equality bill, but opponents promise a "people's veto" to overturn the Maine law, and foes of expanded domestic partnership rights in Washington also launch a ballot repeal effort; Washington, D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty signs a bill to recognize same-gender civil marriages legally performed in other jurisdictions, although conservative African American preachers in the U.S. capitol vow to seek its repeal after 4-times-married former mayor and now City Councilman Marion Barry casts the lone dissenting vote; and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani puts politics before friendship by refusing to attend the Connecticut wedding of the gay couple who opened their home to him during his nasty second divorce in 2001 (written by GREG GORDON, with thanks to REX WOCKNER with BILL KELLEY, and reported this week by CHRIS WILSON and PAM MARSHALL). more

"NewsWrap": The 4th annual IDAHO (International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia) is observed around the world on May 17th, including an online video featuring hundreds of people from 48 countries and 6 continents, local events across France and the U.K., a strong anti-bias statement issued by the European Union, and actions in Canada, Australia, Cameroon, Iran, Turkey, Costa Rica, Cuba, Hong Kong, Beijing, Singapore, South Korea, and Russia; riot police arrest dozens as they break up yet another effort to hold a banned Pride event in Moscow, but a first-ever peaceful Pride march is held in Riga, Latvia, and thousands party with Pride in Brussels, Belgium; the bill creating marriage equality in New Hampshire is on hold as the legislature wrangles with religious protections language demanded by Governor John Lynch, while Nevada lawmakers pass a domestic partnership bill that Governor Jim Gibbons has vowed to veto, but Colorado Governor Bill Ritter signs a bill to provide health insurance and a few other benefits to the domestic partners of state workers; and a California 6th grader is forbidden to give a class presentation about Harvey Milk because the school district says it would violate its sex education policy, but a Colorado 3rd grader organizes a marriage equality rally on the steps of the state capitol (written by GREG GORDON, with thanks to REX WOCKNER with BILL KELLEY, and reported this week by CHRIS COLEMAN and RICK WATTS).
Marriage equality proponents usually base their arguments on fairness, and don't often trumpet the well-documented economic benefit. But controversial REPUBLICAN NATIONAL COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN MICHAEL STEELE claimed this week that opening civil marriage to gay and lesbian couples would unfairly saddle small businesses with increased spousal h ealth care costs. However, based on accepted population percentages, it would appear that there are far more heterosexual workers posing such a "horrific threat" to small business. News commentator KEITH OLBERMANN further dissected Steele's questionable logic on his MSNBC "Countdown" program (with brief intro/outro instrumental music from Frank Sinatra's "Love and Marriage"). . 3:30
