Gridiron Player of the Year Finalists

Jack Brodowicz - Charlotte Catholic High School Class of 2012

Jack Brodowicz, quarterback and defensive back, was Charlotte Catholic’s captain and all-around leader on and off the field. Jack has led the Cougars to multiple undefeated regular seasons and deep state playoff runs in two straight seasons. Brodowicz is not only the starting quarterback of a dominating offense where he accounted for 16 touchdowns and only 1 interception in 2011, but he is also the playmaker on defense who led the team with 6 interceptions in both his senior and junior years. Jack is the student body president, a National Honor Society member, a varsity basketball/baseball player, a volunteer with Special Olympics in North Carolina and he carries a 4.07 grade point average at Charlotte Catholic High School.

Mark Harrell - Charlotte Catholic High School Class of 2012

Mark Harrell was the Cougar’s dominating run blocker and Mark also has the speed and great hands to be an effective pass-catching tight end. He is also a defensive lineman. Harrell set himself apart in national football camps across the country and has worked his way into a full scholarship offer to play football at the University of Notre Dame next season. Mark is a team player and has represented Charlotte Catholic High School well on and off the field throughout his decorated career. At 6‟6” and 275 lbs. Harrell can be a force on either side of the line, but it is the devastating pancake blocks that have made him a legend at Charlotte Catholic. Mark is involved with Fellowship of Christian Athletes, plays on the basketball team at Catholic.



Carter Harris - Marvin Ridge High School Class of 2012

Carter Harris, wide receiver, defensive back, led the Mavericks offense in receiving with 40 catches for 490 yards 7 touchdowns and defense in interceptions (4) during 2011. Carter served as captain and was on the field for almost every snap of Marvin Ridge’s school record 10-2 season, including special teams where he was the holder for the Maverick’s perfect extra point kicking team (48-48) and he recovered onside kick attempts on the “hands team.” Harris is a 3-year Marvin Ridge varsity letterman and also lettered in baseball and track. He carries a 4.71 grade point average and scored an amazing 1920 on his SAT. Carter is active in Fellowship of Christian Athletes and has volunteered at Loaves & Fishes and The Union County Community Shelter.



Brian Mittl - Charlotte Latin High School Class of 2012

Brian Mittl, linebacker/running back is a 2-year captain and dedicated leader of the Hawk’s offense and defense. Brian won NCISAA all-state awards and was selected to the Oasis Shrine Bowl as a linebacker and running back. He has led Latin to 17 wins over the past 2 seasons as their leading tackler and had over 1150 all-purpose yards and 15 touchdowns at running back in 2011. Mittl serves as Latin’s class Vice-President, National Merit Scholar, and is in the Latin Cum Laude Society with a 4.6 grade point average.

Paul Griggs - Charlotte Latin High School Class of 2012

Paul Griggs is Charlotte Latin’s All-Conference Kicker/Punter who helped lead them to a 9-3 record this season. Paul has committed to play next year at Purdue University. Griggs has made several long field goals in his career, including a Latin school record 57-yard field goal on a windy day in Norcross, Virginia. Paul started his career as a reserve at Charlotte Catholic for 2 seasons before transferring to Charlotte Latin and taking over as the varsity starter. Paul got an invite to kick in the US Army All-American Game in San Antonio, TX and will also kick in the Private School Oasis Shrine Bowl this year.

Caleb Kelly - Brookland-Cayce High School Class of 2012

Caleb Kelly is a 4-year starting varsity kicker/punter for Cayce and he has served as captain for 2 years on the football and wrestling teams. Caleb is being recruited as a kicker/punter combo athlete by schools across the Southeast be- cause of his versatility and consistency on and off the field. Caleb has career longs of: kickoff - 73 yards, field goal - 53 yards, and punt - 61 yards. Kelly was chosen for the South Carolina 2011 North South All-Star Game and won Dynamic’s 2010-2011 Kicker of the Year and South Carolina Punter of the Year. Caleb is the student body president, carries a 3.95 grade point average in AP and Honors classes, and has been inducted into the National Honor Society. Caleb is very active in his church, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and community outreach service projects that impact lives. Caleb is considering Furman, Army-West Point, Liberty, South Carolina and several other excellent schools.



J.D. Kent - Providence Day High School Class of 2012

J.D. Kent is Providence Day’s NCISAA State Championship kicker and punter. J.D. had an outstanding 2011 season making 6 field goals and 37-37 extra points. J.D. finished off a memorable season with 2 field goals in the state championship game. Kent started his career as the starting kicker for South Mecklenburg High during his freshman and sophomore years, but transferred to Providence Day for a greater challenge on and off the field. J.D. carries a 4.1 grade point average and is a National Honor Society member. J.D. has committed himself to reaching out in the community through volunteer work at Camp SOAR, Brandeis University, and in local youth sports leagues.



Hobie Proctor - West Rowan High School Class of 2012

Hobie Proctor is West Rowan’s state championship game kicker that continues to win games and make an impact on and off the field. Hobie has led his team to a 29-3 record the past 2 seasons including a 3A State Championship in 2010, and another Championship Game appearance in 2011. This season Hobie made 7 field goals and 43 extra points. Proctor carries a 3.75 grade point average in honors classes and has been volunteering with Relay For Life as well as his church, Cornerside Baptist to impact the lives of people in Rowan County. Hobie plans to attend Appalachian State University next year.

Cason Beatty - Olympic High School Class of 2012

Cason Beatty was the Captain of the Olympic High School football team where he excelled as the Trojan’s punter (2-time All-Conference) and quarterback. Cason is an extremely athletic punter who crushes the ball with huge hang times above 5 seconds. He has been ranked as high as #3 nationally as a punter through camps and combines, which earned him a scholarship to punt at Florida State University next season. Cason is a committed student-athlete and carries a 4.19 grade point average in AP and Honors classes. Cason is also passionate about the volunteer work he has done the past 5 years with Room in the Inn (housing relief to homeless in Charlotte). He has also assisted with Operation Christmas Child and sports programs at the Ballantyne Morrison YMCA.

Dillon Griffith - West Mecklenburg High School Class of 2012

Dillon Griffith is the punter and kicker for the Hawks who continues to lead despite the trials and tribulations that West Mecklenburg football goes through every year. Dillon is also a state championship contending wrestler who trains all year round to dominate on the football field and on the wrestling mat. Griffith is a dedicated student-athlete and carries a 3.85 grade point average in Honors and AP classes. Dillon is very active in his church youth group and has demonstrated a strong faith that is lived out on and off the field everyday.


Wes Medeiros - Charlotte Christian High School Class of 2013

Wes Medeiros is the junior kicker and punter for Charlotte Christian and has been an impact player on the Knight’s Varsity since his freshman year. Wes is known for his dedication, work ethic and proving doubters wrong who think he is too small to play in big-time football games. Wes made 5 field goals this season and averaged 40 yards/punt on his 28 punts. Wes takes his academic career very seriously with a 4.6 grade point average and he is considering Yale as one of his future college choices. Wes is involved at Forest Hill Church in Charlotte. Medeiros’s coach says, “Wes just keeps working and competing everyday and he inspires the rest of our players to reach their potential too.”


Matt Wogan - Porter Ridge High School Class of 2013

Matt Wogan is one of the leaders of the powerhouse Porter Ridge Football Program that played for the North Carolina 4A State Championship in 2011. Matt is ranked in the top 5 nationally as a punter and kicker, but is just as well-known for his humility and unmatched work ethic. Wogan has already proven to be a college-level punter with consistent hang times between 4.7 - 5.3 and punt distances over 60 yards from his foot. Matt also has field goal range out past 57 yards and averages over 70 yards on his kickoffs which routinely go through the uprights out of the back of the end zone. Matt has established himself as a team leader over the past 2 years in the weight room, in the classroom, and on the practice field at Porter Ridge, not only at kicker/punter, but also as a wide receiver. Matt has kept a 3.94 grade point average, is in the National Honor Society, and is active in several school leadership groups at Porter Ridge.

Brian Mittl - Charlotte Latin High School Class of 2012

Brian Mittl is a 2-year Captain and dedicated leader of the Hawk’s offense and defense. Brian won NCISAA All-State Awards and was selected to the Oasis Shrine Bowl as a linebacker and running back. He has led Latin to 17 wins over the past 2 seasons as their leading tackler and had over 1150 all-purpose yards and 15 TDs at running back in 2011. Mittl serves as Latin’s Class Vice-President, National Merit Scholar, and is in the prestigious Cum Laude Society with his 4.6 grade point average in AP and Honors classes. Brian has also had the privilege of doing 3 international study abroad experiences in Italy, Spain, and Mexico and chose to spend a week serving with his church on a mission trip to Jamaica last summer.

Adam Nix - South Mecklenburg High School Class of 2012

Adam Nix is the Sabres’ 2-year Captain and 3-year starting varsity running back. Adam also has starred at defensive back for 3 years at South Mecklenburg and has accomplished so much on the field during those years that he earned SW4A All-Conference Awards 3 years in a row. Nix may be well know around the state for his speed and football skills, but off the field Adam is just as big of superstar as a National Honor Society Member, National Beta Club Member, volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House and he plans to serve our country by going to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point to get his education, play football, and become and officer. Adam Nix carries a 4.2 grade point average with AP and Honors classes and has proven to his coaches, teammates, and classmates that he is someone who can be trusted to get the job done, no matter how big the task.



Matt Vawter - Fort Mill High School Class of 2012

Matt Vawter is an all-around athlete and represents the true definition of student-athlete. Matt has competed on the football, soccer, and track teams at Fort Mill High School while also serving year round with his church (Fort Mill First Baptist) on mission trips locally and across the country during his high school career. Matt is a 2-year varsity kicker at Fort Mill and served as team captain for their game against Chester High School this season. Vawter made 4/6 field goals from 50 yards and in at a 2011 Regional Kicking Showcase and also posted a 46 yard punt with 4.2 hang time to show his versatility. Matt carries a 4.22 grade point average in AP and Honors classes (including AP Calculus and AP Biology). Matt was chosen to attend SC Boys State in 2011, and is a Beta Club Member to go along with his service in Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Engineering Club. Matt plans to attend Clemson University to study Environmental Engineering.



David Weidman - Marvin Ridge High School Class of 2012

David Weidman is a team captain and leader on the football and baseball fields at Marvin Ridge. He led the Mavericks defense this season to a school record 10-2 mark as an impact linebacker making plays from sideline to sideline every game. David also excelled on special teams and his coaches described him as “The most versatile and valuable member of his units who was always willing to do whatever his teammates needed to lead us to victory.” David is a 2-year letterman in football and a 4-year letterman in baseball, but he still makes time to attend the Summer Leadership Seminar at West Point Military Academy, win the outstanding AP Chemistry Award, study classical piano, become a National Merit Scholar Qualifier and serve at his church in Weddington. Weidman carries a 4.93 grade point average, won the AP Scholar with Distinction Award at Marvin Ridge High, and has already scored an astounding 2110 on his SAT, and 32 on his ACT. David lists winning a Rhodes, Fullbright, Marshall or Truman post graduate scholarship among his academic goals for college and would also like to play college baseball next year.

Kyle Duke - Ardrey Kell High School Class of 2012

Kyle Duke is a student-athlete, leader and most inspirational player for the Ardrey Kell Knights. Kyle competes with incredible energy and desire every play whether at tight end or at defensive end. Duke has great size (6’3” - 210 lbs.) and works extremely hard to be an impact player on and off the field. Kyle has had to battle through playing with a diabetic condition that must be managed closely every day, but he never complains or lets it affect his drive to the best. Duke has been active in Young Life at AK for all four years and carries a 4.75 grade point average. Kyle lists Clemson as his top college choice right now.


Harrison Monk - Providence High School Class of 2012

Harrison Monk is the team captain and has been the 3-year starting left tackle for the Panthers. Harrison won Lineman of the Year Awards at Providence in 2010 and 2011, as well as All-Conference and All-Mecklenburg Area awards. Monk has already accepted a scholarship offer to play football at Furman University next year. Harrison has had to overcome adversity after the passing of his father from cancer in November 2009. Harrison has shown great courage and leadership on and off the field at this pivotal time in his life since since losing his dad. Harrison carries a 3.3 grade point average and is very active in the youth group at Carmel Baptist Church as well as participating in community outreach projects; Matthews Matters, Fuelserve, and World Changers.


Zach Panek - Cuthbertson High School Class of 2013

Zach Panek is the 3-year starting varsity offensive lineman for the Cavs and played defensive tackle to bolster the defense. Zach is the only player in Cuthbertson’s short history to start varsity since the first game of his freshman year. Panek was an anchor for the Cavs in 2011, leading them to their first playoff victory in school history and winning All-Conference Awards. Panek had to battle through a shoulder injury that required surgery, but worked incredibly hard during his rehabilitation to come back and play at an even higher level. Zach is a dedicated student-athlete too, carrying a 3.5 grade point average with Honors classes. Panek volunteers as a leader in the community through Habitat For Humanity and New Town Elementary Fall Festivals.

Jordan Mosely – Johnson C. Smith University Class of 2013

Jordan Mosely is the starting left tackle and he helped lead the Johnson C. Smith football team to a 35-33 win in the 2011 Pioneer Bowl. Jordan stands out on any college football field as a 6‟3” and 300 pound athlete with NFL-caliber feet and a lot of raw power. Jordan is also becoming extraordinary off the field with his commitment to reach the next generation of student-athletes who are growing up in the Carolinas. Jordan made his share of mistakes during his teenage years and had to learn some grueling lessons, but he has pledged to use his life’s journey to inspire kids to make right choices. Jordan uses his time away from football to serve as a Dynamic Mentoring Intern reaching out to at-risk community kids on and off the field. Jordan has phenomenal leadership potential and we are excited to honor him tonight for his commitment to community outreach, particularly in the lives of the next generation of student-athletes.

Jake Bishop - Randleman High School Class of 2012

Jake Bishop is the 2-time All-Conference kicker and punter at Randleman. Jake is a 3-year varsity starter. In 2011, Bishop made 5 field goals (with a long of 40 yards) and 44 extra points and also recorded 14 kickoff touchbacks. During a stellar junior season he made 8 field goals (with a long of 43 yards). Jake was also a 4-year Varsity starting soccer player at Randleman High and holds school records for goals in a season (29) and goals in a single game (6). Jake ran track for Randleman too and has qualified for Regionals and State Meets in the 4 x 800M race. Jake is just as impressive off the field with a 4.1 grade point average in AP and Honors classes. Bishop serves as a leader in his school with Christians In Action (CIA), four separate student academic / government groups and at Cross Roads Baptist. Jake has also served on mission trips in Honduras, Canada, and throughout his local community with Operation Christmas Child. Jake plans to study Physical Therapy in college while continuing to make an impact in people’s lives.

Kyle Brinton - Providence High School Class of 2013

Kyle Brinton had an outstanding season kicking for the Panther’s Varsity Football Team. Kyle made 7/9 field goals (with an exceptional long of 47 yards). Brinton also made 15/16 extra points and was a bright spot during a tough football season for Providence. Kyle has been very active in kicking combines and camps where he has finished in the top 3 at a 2011 Dynamic Kicking Camp and made 10/10 field goals inside 50 yards at a National Kicking Combine in 2010. Kyle carries a 3.9 grade point average in AP and Honors classes. He is active in Elevation Church youth events and the Providence German Club on top of being the Founder of the Providence High School Book Club. Kyle will enter his senior year as one of the top kickers in the city and an experienced, accomplished leader on and off the field at Providence High School.
