Phase 2: Development of Hazard Recognition Programs and testing protocols
Academic research in the field of construction management has been criticized for its lack of direct application to the general industry (Betts and WoodHarper 1994). To ensure relevance, it was necessary to design (or redesign) the high priority hazard recognition programs with a strong team of active and experienced professionals. Hence the expert panel along with the researchers developed the prioritized hazard recognition strategies through monthly telephone conference calls and quarterly face-to-face meetings. The development process involved the incorporation of several techniques such as retrieval mnemonics, serious games, goal-setting and feedback processes, visual cues, etc. to improve hazard recognition levels.
Phase 3: Experimentation of designed Hazard recognition strategies with active work crew
To test the effectiveness of the devised hazard recognition strategies, the multiple baseline longitudinal testing approach was used. To corroborate research findings, a Pre/ Post test using a random sample of photographs was also used. For both the testing methods, the criterion measure was the proportion of hazards identified and the treatment variable was the hazard recognition strategy that was introduced as an intervention.
