Peripherals - How computer peripherals work, including magnetic disk drives (floppy disks, hard drives), optical disk drives (CD-R, CD-RW, DVDROM, DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW), displays (CRT and LCD monitors) and laser printers and realize why it is important to limit the number of disk-read phases when writing programs. (Ch 10 p. 297)

Computer peripherals like magnetic disks dives, optical disk drives ,monitors, laser printers etc. interface basically through use of drivers and small programs use to run peripherals.
Magnetic disk drives:

A magnetic disk is made up of one or more flat, circular glass, metal or plastic disks.A magnetic material and coated with it. Particles inside the magnetic substance's limited region

It can be magnetically polarized with an electromagnet in one of two directions; an electromagnet

The direction of polarization previously reported can also be detected. Magnetic polarization, therefore, can be used to distinguish between 1’s and 0’s.

Hard disk drives:

There are several plates on most hard disk drives, all placed on the same axis, with heads on the same axis.

The two surfaces of each dish. In tandem, the heads move, because they are located above the same

On each surface, the point. With the exception of the top and bottom, which need distinct arms and heads,

There are two read/write heads in each arm, serving the surfaces of two adjacent plates.
Optical disk drives:

A laser light is used by an optical disk drive (ODD) to read data from or write data to an optical disc. That include disks such as CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray. This enables you to use pre-recorded discs to play music or watch movies. Computer software is always on one of these disks as well, so you need an optical drive to install software.

CD-R and CD-RW:

The CD was the first optical disk used in electronic systems. This has made it easier for you to play standard music CDs on the computer. However, CD-ROMs (Compact Disk Read-Only Memory) have been created specifically for use in machines. These are like standard CDs but contain, for example, data files or applications, read-only media. The CD-ROM became a commonly used software delivery tool. After CD -RW(read- write was invented which could perform both the functions.

DVD:

DVD technology is similar to CD-ROM technology in nature. The disk is similar in size,And it's similarly formatted. The use of a laser, however, with a shorter wavelength of light (visible)Red or blue-violet, instead of infrared) helps the disk to be more tightly packed. Furthermore, the laser. It can be concentrated in such a way that two or more data layers can be placed on the same side of the disk, one beneath, one underthe other. This blister technology is used in various CD and DVD formats, called CD-R, DVD-R, and

DVD+R. Additionally, there are rewritable versions of this technology. These are known as CDRW,

DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD-RAM, andDVD+RAMBD-RE.

Displays:

A display is an image made up of thousands or millions of individual

pixels, or picture elements, arranged to make up a large rectangular screen. Each pixel is a tiny square on the display.
LCD displays:

Liquid crystal display technology is the prevalent means of displaying images. A fluorescent light or LED panel, located behind the display, produces white light.A polarizing filter in front of the light panel polarizes the light so that most of it is polarized in one direction. The polarized light then passes through a matrix of liquid crystal cells. The light falling on the crystals then display the screen.

Laser printers:

Today, the prevalent form of printing for most applications is laser printing. Laser printingis derived from xerography.A laser is fired in response to the dots to be printed. The drum is photosensitive and as a result the drum will be electronically charged and the toner sticks to the drum.A sheet of paper is fed to the drum which picks up the toner from the drum. The fusing system metls the toner to the paper and then printed page exits the printer.

It is important to limit the number of disk read phases while writing programs as it will hamper the speed of the CPU and also the performance of the over all systems as it is being overloaded with disk read phases but how you limit it depends on the application and the environment that the application will work in.
