A verb is a word that indicates an action, a state or event.
The past tense of the verb refers to events that have happened in the past. It is used to describe things that have already happened.
The past tense can be divided into: the simple past tense, past continuous tense and the past perfect tense.
1. The simple past tense shows that you are talking about something that has already happened. It is used :
(a). to show an action that happened at a certain time in the past.
Examples
i.He met with an accident last week.
ii. He ate all the food in the pot.
(b). to show a habitual past action.
Examples
i. She always played with her dolls outside.
ii.He has never taken the bus before.
(c). to show an action in the passive form.
Examples
i. A stone was thrown at the dog.
ii.Her leg was broken in the accident.
2. The past continuous tense: this is used to talk about past events that happened over a period of time. It is used:
(a). to describe an action which was happening at a certain time in the past.
Examples
i. They were packing their bags when their father came home.
ii. Sarah was cleaning the board when the teacher entered the class.
(b). to describe two actions happening at the same time in the past.
Examples
i. She was cleaning her room while her sister was ironing the clothes.
ii. I was resting when it was raining.
3. The past perfect tense: this is used to indicate that an action was completed at some point before something else happened. This tense is formed with the modal verb " had" plus the past participle of the verb.
Examples
a. I had cleaned the room when she got here.
b. After she had said her prayers, she played the piano.
c. The woman asked if we had met before.
d. The bus had left while she was getting dressed.
