Presentation Description:

Paul will discuss the importance of identifying an effective motive (dream) to keep athletes inspired to learn and grow through the many challenges inherent to elite athletic performance. The importance of dream affirmative core values as a means of making critical training, diet and lifestyle decisions. He will explore functional rest methods and common symptoms of excess fatigue. He will share methods for knowing when an athlete’s program needs to be modified to facilitate successful outcomes. He will also highlight what areas of an athlete’s body commonly hold prodromal stress, “forecasting” challenges that can be avoided through intelligent intervention. Paul will give key indicators of when an athlete’s diet may be the primary cause of musculoskeletal, recovery, and performance challenges.

Paul Chek’s “Eugene Sandow-like” approach to athlete management is highly practical, and is not the product of intellectually based theories so often derived from overly compartmentalized, often soulless science.

Sat. Nov. 14 - 3:00-4:30

Joe De Franco - The "Slow" Approach to Developing Blazing Speed

Joe DeFranco is the founder and owner of the world-famous DeFranco's Gym (est. 2003). “DeFranco’s” pioneered the hardcore, warehouse-type training centers that are now popping up throughout the country. Their results-driven, New Jersey-based facility was built with one thing in mind – IMPROVING ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE! DeFranco’s caters to serious high school, college and professional athletes that are driven to reach their full athletic potential. Every square inch of the facility is dedicated to getting athletes brutally strong, lightning fast and mentally tough.

Presentation Description:

In this 90-minute presentation, Joe will tell you why the 10-yard sprint and pushing a heavy sled should be two staples in almost every athlete's program - regardless of their sport. He will also give specific details as to why he feels most speed experts are wrong about resisted sprints and heavy sled drags. Contrary to popular belief, they do NOT "train your body to be slow" as most coaches will tell you. In fact, Joe feels they are one of the most powerful tools for improving an athlete's ability to accelerate - and he's got a 15-year in-house study to back up his claims! You will definitely leave this presentation with an entirely new perspective on one of the most controversial topics in the industry!

He is a proud father of two boys who keep him moving and is an avid triathlete.

Topic Description:

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections are an exciting addition to the treatment options currently used for musculoskeletal injuries, and is especially useful to bridge the gap between more conservative therapeutic interventions and surgery, especially where soft tissue tears and osteoarthritis are concerned. PRP is made from a patient’s own blood using centrifugation, and is often administered under ultrasound guidance.

This presentation will not only review current science and best practices, but will also provide a live ultrasound guided demonstration of a shoulder PRP injection.

Dr. Darryn Willoughby - Advanced Nutritional and Biochemical Applications for Muscle Hypertrophy and Fat Loss

Dr. Willoughby holds BS and MS degrees in Exercise Science from Tarleton State University and a PhD in Neuromuscular Physiology and Biochemistry with sub-emphases in Nutritional Biochemistry and Molecular Physiology from Texas A&M University. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Health, Human Performance, and Recreation at Baylor University and is also the director of the Exercise and Biochemical Nutrition Lab. He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist from the National Strength and Conditioning Association and a certified exercise and sport nutritionist from the ISSN.

Dr. Willoughby is an internationally recognized scholar and one of the top leaders in the field where his primary research focuses on and the molecular mechanisms regulating muscle hypertrophy and atrophy. Additionally, his research emphasizes nutrigenetics and the effectiveness and efficacy of nutritional supplements in helping to support muscle hypertrophy, attenuate atrophy, and improve exercise and sport performance.

He is well published in scientific research journals such as the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, Journal of Sport Science and Medicine, International Journal of Sports Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism, and Amino Acids. Dr. Willoughby gives invited presentations at numerous professional conferences regarding sport performance and muscle adaptation to training and nutritional supplementation.

He has served as a former collegiate strength and conditioning coach. Personally, he is a former collegiate and semi-professional football player and is presently a Master’s level competitive bodybuilder.

Presentation Description:

Protein and creatine monohydrate supplementation have been shown to have a positive effect on muscle protein synthesis in response to single bouts or resistance exercise. Moreover, muscle protein accretion and subsequent hypertrophy is augmented in response to periods of resistance training when performed in conjunction with the ingestion of either of these supplements. Protein ingestion has an insulinogenic effect and, combined with the direct effect of the amino acid leucine, stimulates the Akt/mTOR signaling pathway in skeletal muscle. Creatine monohydrate appears to be a role as a co-factor in regulating the activity of the myogenic regulatory factor transcription factors, in their ability to result in the transactivation of muscle-specific genes. Lower carbohydrate intakes, along with a higher intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids, in one’s daily diet are known to help mediate body fat loss. A diet lower in carbohydrates may entice the body into relying more of triglycerides as a fuel substrate, thereby up-regulating adipose tissue lipolysis. Polyunsatured fatty acids are known the inhibit the activity of the enzyme fatty acid synthase, which is an important regulator of de novo lipogenesis.

SWIS Chiropractic Presenters and Delegates - Demonstrating Their Favorite Adjustments for Specific Weight Training Injuries

What happens when you are at most chiropractic technique seminars? You end up chatting in the hallway with one of your colleagues, and next thing you know you are shown one or two really cool adjustments. In fact, you usually end up getting an adjustment that is awesome from one of your colleagues and you just want to learn how to do it.

So my goal is to bring the hallway to the presentation stage by getting all the chiropractors who are presenting at SWIS to the stage to demonstrate how they do their unique adjustments for various conditions. Each SWIS 2015 chiropractor will be given 1-2 minutes each on how they would assess and adjust various joint disorders like an upper thoracic dysfunction or A/C joint subluxation, or a rib fixation or a lumbar facet joint imbrication or a sacro-iliac joint fixation and dozens of other joint dysfunctions.

In fact, I know there will be many great chiropractors in the audience, and they are also allowed to come onto the stage to demonstrate their favorite technique.

Each adjustment will be filmed with close up cameras, so you can review it again later.

My goal is to have them demonstrate 20-30 new adjustments in 90 minutes, which can give you a whole new level of adjusting technique.

No fluff. No long winded explanations. Just straight "here is how you do the adjustment" demonstrated on Dr. Ken Kinakin.

Presenters that have confirmed they will be part of the panel:

Dr. David Leaf

Dr. Mark Scappaticci

Dr. Jerome Rerucha

Dr. Dale Buchberger

Dr. Rob Rakowski

And there will be more...

Be there for one of the most unique presentations of the symposium.
