INTRODUCTION

Road condition is a critical factor that has influence on all residents. This document presents the data analysis for the Syracuse road potholes reported during April-September 2016 and road condition ratings from 2001 to 2015. It is intended to provide data-driven and visual insights to municipal stakeholders to facilitate the decision making process.

DATA RECOURCES

Street Shapefile:

This street shapefile includes all of the streets in the City of Syracuse. It also includes the category of street, like a major road versus a local road. You can join the road rating and potholes data to this shapefile using the unique Street ID attribute that is contained across datasets.

Potholes Filled:

This is a record of most potholes filled in the City of Syracuse since April, 2016. Most potholes are filled using a machine called a durapatcher. Each time a durapatcher fills a pothole, a row of data is logged, documenting the time and location. Some larger potholes are filled using other methods, and not all potholes in the city are found. The City only started tracking all potholes filled in April, 2016.

Road Ratings:

Every road block in the city is rated on a 1-10 scale. Each road is rated every two years, and we are supplying records of road ratings going back to the year 2000. There is a scoring criteria for these ratings. 1 is the worst rating and 10 is the best. Generally, it is accepted that once a road reaches a rating of 5 or below, it is a candidate for larger maintenance work called "milling and paving".

IDENTIDY THE ROADS ON WHICH POTHOLES ARE LIKELY TO POP UP

  • The South Salina Street has over 400 potholes reported. It has far more potholes compared to other streets in Syracuse area, thus it should gain high attention.

  • The Valley Drive has the second most potholes reported: almost 200 potholes, which is also far worse than the rest streets.

  • Top ten streets with potholes reported include: S Salina ST, Valley DR, W Corning AVE, Ballantyne RD, Belleyue AVE, Atlantic AVE, Academy PL, Edna RD, W Genesee ST, and Conifer DR.

IDENTIDY THE ROAD CONDITION PATTERNS OVER THE PAST 15 YEARS (2001-2015)

  • The road condition was getting worse during the past 5 years (2011-2015): the number of candidates for reconstruction is significantly increasing compared to early years.

  • It can be observed that the road condition pattern had shifted year by year from 2001 to 2010, which indicates the city had consistently fix problems. From 2011 to 2015, however, the road condition patterns had not been significantly changed.

  • The road in Indian Reservations are continually getting worse.

  • This figure shows the newly paved road patterns over the past fifteen years.

  • Since 2007, the number of newly paved roads started to decline. The number of newly paved roads are significantly decreased since 2013.

  • In this figure, the Orange points show the potholes reported in 2015, and the red points show the candidate roads for reconstruction in 2015.

  • Apparently, new potholes appeared on many roads that had not been rated as reconstruction candidates.
