RATING/QUOTING INTERNATIONAL OCEAN FREIGHT CARGO

  1. OCEAN FREIGHT

    • PCSXLXWXH= cu inches.

EXAMPLE: 44”x48”x72” = 152,064 cu in

The next process is to divide the cubic inches by a factor of 1,728, which will provide the total cubic feet.

EXAMPLE: 152,064/1728=88 cft

The final process is to divide the CFT by a factor of 35.314 to determine the CBM.

EXAMPLE: 88cft/35.314 = 2.49 CBM

Now we know the Cubic Meters, we are ready to rate or quote the consignment.

This traffic is going from Los Angeles to Rotterdam: Port To Port - FOB
Our carrier is Carotrans (Co O loader/NVOCC), who offers us a rate of $ 78.00 W/M. Simply, stated this means we must multiply the CBM, by the buy rate.

EXAMPLE: 2.49 CBMx78.00= $ 194.22

This will be our ocean freight cost.

Lets mark up at $ 95.00 W/M

EXAMPLE: 2.49 CBM x 95.00 = 236.55

The difference between BUY rate and SELL rate is GROSS PROFIT. In this instance our GP is $ 236.55 less $194.22 = $42.33 only the ocean freight charges.

It is suggested a mark up of $ 150.00 on a 20 foot container and $ 200-250 on a 40 foot container. Please note that 20’ containers can hold up t0 33 CBM, 40’ containers can hold up to 66 CBM.
There is always a $ 95.00 handling charge on ocean freight.
Ocean profits are best realized through volume, whether the volume is several containers, large bulk items, or weekly, monthly or annual… VOLUME is the key to larger profit margins.
