Scope

This document gives requirements, recommendations, and guidance for the design, analysis, materials, fabrication, testing, and operation of dynamic production riser systems used on floating production installations.

The functional requirements defined in this standard will allow alternatives that suit specific field requirements. The intention is to facilitate and complement the decision process and, where requirements are non-mandatory, provide positive guidance for the selection of an optimum solution.

Guidance is also given for developing interface information for the equipment attached to the risers.

The approach for structural design of risers, as reflected in this document, is generally based on the principles of limiting states of the risers and related components under serviceability, ultimate limit state, accidental limit state, and fatigue limit state.

This document covers the following risers for floating production installations:

  1. Top tensioned risers, including production, injection, work-over/completion through a production riser, and high pressure drilling. Work-over/completion and drilling risers for mobile offshore vessels are covered by other ISO or API standards.

  2. Catenary risers, including import/export risers and dynamic parts of flowlines.

  3. Hybrid risers, and

  4. Offloading risers.

This document assumes that the riser will be made of low alloy carbon steels or titanium. However, other metal materials, such as aluminum, are not excluded. Steel and titanium pipe will be called “metal” pipe and unbonded flexible pipe will be called “flexible” pipe.

Composite materials and flexible pipes are beyond the scope of this standard. Design considerations for unbonded flexible pipe are included primarily by reference to API RP 17B “Recommended practice for flexible pipe”.

Specific equipment or components covered are listed as follows (complete riser system from the sub-sea wellhead to the surface wellhead for a top tensioned riser (TTR), or from the end of the dynamic portion to the first flange above the hang-off for a catenary riser (SCR):

  1. sub-sea wellheads,

  2. tie-back connectors,

  3. stress joints,

  4. riser joint pipe,

  5. riser joint connectors,

  6. keel joints,

  7. tension joints,

  8. surface wellheads,

  9. surface production trees,

  10. riser tensioning systems

  11. buoyancy modules,

  12. flexible joints,

  13. riser clamps,

  14. riser spider,

  15. VIV strakes,

  16. centralizers,

  17. foundation,

  18. casings,

  19. conductors, and

  20. jumpers.

Interface design guidance, such as functional requirements for the associated equipment and component, will be given in the section on Design Considerations but component design will not be given.
