President’s Ramblings
First, I have two very big thank you’s. The first is to our outgoing editor, Kevin/W3DAD. Kevin took over the editor’s duties on a temporary basis until we could find a permanent editor. As with so many things in life, temporary became a relative term. Geologically speaking, two years doesn’t seem like much, but coming up with a first class club newsletter for a couple of years can seem like an eternity. I know, because I did it back when I had to literally cut and paste on paper. Computers have been a big help but it’s still work. So our yellow LARC hat’s are off to W3DAD for sticking with it. We’ll be looking forward to the technical articles from Kevin in the future.
The second thank you is to Bob/KB3HGW for offering to take over the editor’s position. We’ve got a lot of talented members who could write up a ham related article and have it published in the Feedback. It is really tough for an editor to continue to create something out of thin air issue after issue. I hope that some of you will periodically submit an article reviewing a new piece of equipment or on something you’ve found interesting about the hobby. Grist for the mill is always appreciated.
Pud/W3YD has covered the events that we’ve participated in for the last month elsewhere in this issue. It has been quite a busy month. The MDC QSO party is nearly upon us and it is my profound hope that we’ll get the rotator replaced prior to using it. I haven’t heard anything about the DC Roadrunners Labor Day Race yet, but will give you a heads up if we get invited to help out.
If you have any thoughts on guest speakers for the meetings, or have some equipment you’d like to bring to a meeting for a show and tell, please let me know.
I’ll just mention that the ARES/RACES program in Prince George’s County is going forward. We’ve given the hospitals lists of equipment that we suggest they purchase to set up a radio station. We’ve also been meeting with the Health Department as a member of their bio-terrorism task force and will be having some up coming drills. If you are not a member of ARES/RACES, I urge you to contact me to sign up. We’ve managed to keep most of our radio spectrum over the years because we’re mandated to provide emergency communications if needed. It’s part of our duty to become involved and get trained so we can provide qualified operators to local jurisdictions during disasters.

MINUTES FOR JUNE 2002
Laurel Amateur Radio Club
Vice President Frank (HD) Scott/K3HDM brought the meeting to order at 1930. This was an abbreviated meeting as there was not a great deal of old or new business to be brought before the Club.
The treasurer’s report and approval of any outstanding minutes was deferred until our next meeting.
HD reported that 15 members participated in Field Day activities this month. Special thanks were accorded Mary Ellen/W3VY for the excellent spice cake she prepared for Field Day. Several members commented very favorably upon it.
Dan/KA8YPY, President of the Foundation for Amateur Radio, suggested in his FAR report that changes in Auto-Call would bring in more member club participation. He specifically indicated more member club columns would be appearing.
Upcoming events include:
6 July---The 4th of July parade in Laurel.
7 July---Special Event for the Laurel Fire Rescue Personnel.
28 July---Timonium Hamfest.
2d Week in August---MD-DC QSO party.
7, 8 September---FAR Hamfest in Howard County fairgrounds. VE testing sessions will occur and NWS and RACES will be represented at the Hamfest. Volunteer effort is needed for this event.
Meeting was adjourned at 2000.
Respectfully submitted,
Edgar Rummel/KB3DVC
Secretary

Field Day
June 22-23, 2002
This year LARC ran FD from the Club Shack using battery power (1E).
From this location we had comfy rest facilities, air conditioning and lots of shade.
Key down was Saturday at 2:55 PML and the station was QRT at 2:00 PML Sunday
Dennis/KT3D and Jm/WI3N spent 3 hours Saturday AM trying to install software in the Shack computer and Matt's laptop. This software would allow the Kenwood HF radio to control the logging program and vise versa. They we unsuccessful in their endeavor and a .xls spread sheet was formatted and used to log this event.
Mary Ellen/W3VY and Charles/AA3WC supplied food stuffs (finger food) and some of the 'best' spice cake that anyone had ever laid their lips to.
Joe/N3TZA supplied beverages and ice, for a cool one.
On Sunday, on 2m, we received a call from Toby/KB3BWR/aero-mobile, asking if the contact would help and to his disappointment, he was informed by Pud/W3YD, VHF contacts were not allowed.
The club made 134 de-duped contacts, scored no additional points. Final score = 268.

Special Event Pud/HD/Dennis/Bob/Jim/Joe/Howard, and visitors Kevin, Matt and Harper (all related to N3TZA) looked on as we worked 44 stations
from around the country, some of whom were looking for our SPECIAL EVENT certificate. A good, casual, time was had by all participants in this 12-hour effort. (A copy of the proposed certificate, designed by N3WSG/Jerry is included in the e-version of this FEEDBACK!) Tnx Jerry … well designed, and quite colorful!
(Both of the above events were worked from our shack, where our beam was frozen to the west, and our dipole, on forty meters, was the workhorse.)
Fourth of July activities sponsored by the Laurel 4
th of July Committee were also assisted by several LARCers … we coordinated on the club repeater (440), and no problems were encountered there. Main problem was caused by electionitis … the normal one-hour parade was extended to almost two hours because every politician running for anything stopped to “kiss the babies and press the flesh” at every crowd they saw (crowd is defined as two or more people.) Later in the day, WI3N and W3YD coordinated the fireworks display between the grandstand and the shooters’ positions at Laurel Lake.
News Items
fBay: Pud is auctioning a TH-28, Kenwood 2-meter HT, with manual and wall-charger. The rig needs a battery (~$35-40); minimum bid is $51; bids accepted in increments of $1.00; auction ends when the July meeting starts … cash/check. Pud will keep all bidders informed of highest active bid.
Fall-Fest, this joint effort of both the FAR and CARA will be a two-day hamfest, Sept 7 & 8, at the Howard Co. Fairgrounds. LARC has been offered a free table to unload some of the rare antiques we all have in our shacks, and which the LARC shack has a fair share of also. Problem: we need a few folks who can dedicate a few hours to man the table. If you’re so inclined, let Jim, HD, or Pud know “when” and “how long” you can volunteer.
The
Fall-Fest is also being billed as the MDC convention. There will several programs on both days; one such, which should of immediate interest to us, is a SKYWARN class offered by the NWS. As more details become available, they will be posted. Of course, the LARC VET will be there on Sunday for testing.
QST magazines, sorted and bundled by year (tnx to N3TZA) are available at the club shack. We have several complete copies of several years, going back into the 1980s. If we can’t find a good home for these, Mr. Dempsey, as in Dumpster, will accommodate us.
Contesting will be discussed at the July LARC meeting, which is also the quarterly meeting of the
LARC Regional PVRC Club. The next contest of our club is the MDC QSO Party, Aug 10-11. I would encourage folks to support the club from the shack, or work it from your home QTH if you can. It’s a “gentleman’s” contest: noon to midnight on Saturday, and noon to eight pm on Sunday. Our club has won four of the last five years (we didn’t try last year because of perceived lack of competition!) More info and planning at the July meeting.
ARRL Training Manuals, all three levels, are being sold by
SOMETHING SPECIAL COFFEEHOUSE, 504 Main St, Laurel. Pat Walsh is really doing this as a favor to LARC. We also have down there about 12 Net Directories, and the current issue of
AUTOCALL (price recently raised to $2 per). Visit the
CoffeeHouse, and buy a cup of coffee, say tnx to Pat, and get your
AUTOCALL (support the FAR).
The
Foundation for Amateur Radio (FAR) meets on the second Wednesday of each month
, alternating between Virginia and Maryland. I went to the July meeting, and will have a somewhat complete report at the July LARC meeting. However, highlights of the meeting include: the announcement that they have awarded 57 scholarships this year, and will announce next year’s program in Jan/Feb 2003; there was some discussion of the Fall-Fest (see above); also, AUTOCALL, the big money LOSER for FAR was raised to a $2 prescription, in lieu of going to bi-monthly, and clubs are being actively encouraged to contribute their “local news” to make this
in fact a regional, timely NEWS-magazine.
(W3YD)
Study Manuals Available
I just delivered five of the new AMATEUR EXTRA manuals to Pat Walsh, at SOMETHING SPECIAL, on Main Street.
The cover price of this manual is $24.95 .... and includes the 800 or so questions/answers (up from 650) used by the VEs when devising the various EXTRA class tests. (The test is still 50 questions, multiple choice, and this new syllabus is effective July 1.)
The current book, although it looks just like the last one, is the EIGHTH EDITION, in case you go shopping elsewhere!
SOMETHING SPECIAL also has, on the shelf, NOW YOU'RE TALKING ($19), and the GENERAL CLASS manual ($15).
Also available are the ARRL NET DIRECTORY ($5), and the current issue of AUTOCALL ($1).

decision reached that AUTOCALL needs to continue as a monthly magazine and
to keep the publication going it is necessary to raise the rates. The

increase, and a good FallFest, the board hopes the FAR will stop loosing
money at a rapid rate.

increase content of the magazine to increase reader interest. As a first
step, AUTOCALL will include each member club in the magazine’s directory.
