myuo8o2 - want to see my pomps pics?-11/27/10

All I can say is - WOW - pomps have been chewing hard last several days at PlayALinda - I limited 2 days in a row, and had 5 pomps on Wed.

Bait of choice is clam - frozen or fresh.

They are really far out pass second bar.

Go have some fun guys/gals.

11-28-10

well i went out to flagler pier today around 2 o clock and was bottom fishing until about 3:00-3:30 then it was all blues. i started throwing a gotcha plug just behind the breakers and came up with two 2-3 pound blues with three fish breaking off. after that, i moved to the end and it was pretty much a blue every cast.

11-28-10

Fished yesterday @ sunglow. 28th

Caught a Blue on every other cast and reeled in a whiting on the other rod with shrimp. all in all it was pretty good.

12-3-10

For piers , check out Jacksonville pier (bait and tackle nearby), and Flagler Pier .

For surf fishing, Little Talbot Island (highly reccomend), Hanna Park , South point Vedra Beach , Gate Station, and the 'rock pile' (ask for directions)

Curently : bluefish , whiting , drum , pompano, sheephead (pilings), sea trout , occasional spanish mackeral.
Baits: sand fleas , fresh shrimp, fresh dead shrimp, finger mullet, sand fleas , and more sand fleas (lol).

If you want to fish from the surf right there on the beach at the south Jetties is an outstanding spot.

12-10-10

Today will be a great day to head to the surf to fish for some tasty bull whiting. Bull whiting are being caught as well as blues and weakfish.

Fresh shrimp fished in the surf on the bottom will usually give you all the action you can handle.

12-15-10

Ocean piers: Forget about it.
12-24-10

Surf anglers should continue to catch whiting, blues and puppy drum.

12-31-10

Surf & Piers

Richie Knuth at the Fishin' Shack in Daytona Beach Shores said there has been a lot of drum action at the Sun Glow Pier and nearby surf.

"A couple guys said they were catching 15 and 20 of them in a day; the hard core (anglers) and some people going for just a few hours are catching four or five," Knuth said.

A few reds and whiting have come in as well. Surf temperatures have been down in the low 50s for weeks now, and the pompano have all gone deep and south as a result.

The science on pompano shows that these fish follow water temperatures of 70 to 82 degrees and the coldest water they'll tolerate before moving is 65 degrees.

1-1-11

Mussels, oysters, and fiddler crabs should all do the trick to put a tasty sheepshead at the end of your hook.

Whiting are being caught in the surf and at St. Marys Sound and Nassau Sound. There is nothing more tasty than a cold water whiting. Shrimp fished on the bottom at your favorite drop will help you catch plenty.

George Crady Bridge State Fishing Pier anglers are catching phenomenal amounts of speckled trout from the pier. Floating a live shrimp on the first of the outgoing tide just off the bottom has been working well.

1-5-11

Ocean piers: Both the Jacksonville Beach Pier and the St. Johns County Pier were poor all week. Northerly winds should clean up the water and push some fish in close to shore.

dler crabs will always be the go-to bait for these tasty fish. The black drum bite is good in the holes. The whiting bite in the St. Augustine Inlet has been about as good as it gets. They should be down in the deeper holes around Moultri

1-10-11

Ocean piers: It's been slow except for brief bites during northeast winds.

1-13-11

Fishing doesn’t sound good

1-19-11

The whiting bite has been excellent in the inlet ? lousy on the beaches - and should continue to be good throughout the weekend.

1-20-11

There have also been recent reports of whiting fishing being good on some days, but hit-and-miss on others. Amelia Island State Park anglers are also experiencing hit-and-miss days with whiting and puppy drum.

Surf & Piers

Despite a downpour early this week, the water clarity in the surf is excellent, said Elaine Brown at the Sunglow Pier in Daytona Beach Shores.

She said the week's catch has been whiting, a couple of sheepshead and trout, a lot of small sharks and some flounder.

Compared to some very slow surf fishing in the last few weeks, Brown said anglers are experiencing "quite the turn of events."

She said the bite has been best later in the day.

"It usually starts cranking up around 5, 6 o'clock and they can fill up a bucket with whiting," she said.

Ocean has been weak.

...You won't find a lot of two-pounders. Five pounds is more the average. These fish are in a spawning mode as well. The whiting bite in the inlet here is terrific -- if you can get out. With west winds blowing all weekend, be sure to pay attention...

2-2-11

Sounds slow, no mention of much of anything

2-4-11

Surf & Piers

Richie Knuth at the Fishin' Shack said about all he's heard of this week is a few whiting caught around the Sunglow Pier.

2-10-11

The whiting bite is on!

Anglers fishing the Nassau Sound and at the banks of Amelia Island State Park are reporting whiting in good numbers and at good sizes. Boaters fishing the Nassau Sound are reporting whiting in the 12- to 16-inch range.

Surf fishing remains terrible. There was one good report of a good whiting bite 5 miles up north beach. Whiting bite in St Aug Inlet remains red hot with many getting 50.

Some reds were caught in the creeks on falling water. There were also some nice reds caught on the flats around Devil's Elbow. Trout are scarce -- and closed down through the end of January. The whiting bite in the St. Augustine Inlet remains red hot, with most anglers catching near their limits of 50 fish.

There were a couple of reports of jumbo black drum being caught in the Guana River up near the dam. Several fish more than 10 pounds were weighed.

The Atlantic

Near shore, the bite in the surf is still terrible -- unless you're targeting stingrays. There were a couple reports, however, of a good bite of bull whiting about five miles up North Beach. As fleeting as they've been, there's no telling where they'll move, so try them fast.

2-11-11

Surf & Piers

Anglers at the Sunglow Pier in Daytona Beach Shores reported a ton of whiting as well as a few sheepshead in this week's catch. The surf temperature was still around 55 degrees.

Sheepshead are heading into an annual breeding period, and coming up on the full moon Feb. 18 they will start to feed very heavily, then shut down for a bit before picking back up.

Also, Richie Knuth at the Fishin' Shack in Daytona Beach Shores said he's heard of a few pompano caught this week.

2-16-11

Ocean piers: The stingray bite is good at the Jacksonville Beach and St. Johns County piers. Otherwise, don’t waste your time.

2-17-11

Whiting bite expectedly poor on the beaches, but they remain stacked in the inlet here. And they are in good numbers off the beach in 40 feet of water too.

2-19-11

Surf fisherman who regulate these two areas,

Grab your gear and hit the beach ASAP! I have fished the past three days and plan on fishing sunday. The moon has been big and bright and the fish are thick! If you want the monster bull whiting, hit playlinda at canaveral natl seashore EARLY! When the gate opens, you should be waiting. The bull whiting bite has been non stop till around 10:30, then it goes ice cold. No pompano, but huge bull whiting on shrimp and clams. If your hunting the black drum, sheepshead or pompano, Cocoa beach has been on fire. Most pomps are small, but I did catch one fat 17" pomp today. The stingrays and blues are thick out there, but the yummy fish are just waiting for a nice orange bead with some shrimp. The fishing at cocoa was great all day long these past three days. I caught a bunch of small pomps in addition to the one keeper which is a great sign.

The three day eaters from playlinda and cocoa:  57 FAT whiting, 1 keeper 17" Pomp, 4 keeper Black Drum, 1 16" sheepshead. Lots of small whiting/ pompano released along with a dozen or so blues and two stingrays. Also, there have been a bunch of manowar jellies in the surf and washin up on the beach, so watch your feet and your children!

2-21-11

Top catches: Captain Jim Oliver and Dan Lafavor caught 152 whiting out of Nassau Sound. ... Captain Tony Bozzella guided Jeff Hite and Jeff Goods to a catch of 30 redfish to 27 inches and several black drum in the Hannah Mills area of the river using jigs and mud minnows.

Best of luck on catching some eaters!

2-23-11

The Nassau Sound, Nassau River and Amelia Island State Park are all areas producing great numbers of whiting. Fresh shrimp fished on the bottom will give you great results when targeting whiting. The north end of the island reports for whiting are still slim to none, but any day now the St. Marys Sound should begin to fire off.

Ocean piers: There were a couple of whiting spurts at both the Jacksonville and St. Johns County piers. But the water temperature is still too low for any kind of real bite. In fact, the surf temperature went down a few degrees from Monday to Wednesday. Still, northeast winds are going to blow, and that's at least some good news for the whiting fishing — but not much.

Whting good in the saint A inlet but bad at the coast. WT 55

3-2-11

Ocean piers: Whiting showed up briefly at both the Jacksonville Beach and St. Johns County piers, but it was slow 90 percent of the time. Northeast winds for the next few days might help, but surf temperatures are on the way down again. That's not good

3-3-11

Surf fishing is slowly picking up with whiting, sharp nosed sharks, and rays being caught. Shrimp fished on the bottom will usually give you excellent results.

3-9-11

Best bet Must be 6-8 Sunday-Tue

For the first time in a long while, the best bet for a cooler of fresh fish is at the area piers: Jacksonville Beach, St. Johns County and Flagler County. The whiting have been thick all week. Some coolers topped 100 pounds. It could be crowded, but the weather's going to be pretty and the fish are there. Get a pound of shrimp and have some fun.

3-10-11

Ocean piers: It's wide-open on all the area piers for whiting. This is the first decent bite since early fall.

Read more at Jacksonville.com: http://mayportmirror.jacksonville.com/sports/outdoors/2011-03-09/story/jim-suttons-fishing-forecast#ixzz2sKTwKN3Q

3-10-11

The big news is that, after a long hiatus in fall and winter, the whiting have finally shown up on the beaches. It's been crazy at the county pier, with some anglers wheeling off 100 pounds of fish in their coolers.

3-16-11

The whiting bite continues whether you are a surf, bank, boat or bridge fisherman. The Nassau River, the mouth of Egan's Creek, Cumberland Sound and the surf have all been locations where anglers are catching whiting.

American Beach, Amelia Island State Park, Fort Clinch State Park and Slider's beach access are a few of the locations where anglers are reporting great catches from the surf.

3-16-11

Ocean piers: After one of the best whiting bites in a couple of years last week, declining water temperatures shut the bite down again. There are a few redfish, bluefish and flounder being caught, but they’re scarce. 8-12th was good apparently. Mayport

3-16-11

Sheepshead and black drum will be good bets on any shell bars or pilings. And surf fishing finally fired up. Some folks were taking 100 pounds of whiting off the St. Johns County Pier early in the week.

Pompano, then, will be only a week or so behind that. And the cobia will follow them.

3-19-11

It looks like the moon has alot to do with the pompano bite.  I was at PDL (Ponce De Leon) beach and I saw numerous keeper pompano caught "all around me" .   I did manage to catch a nice sheepshead and a bull whiting on sand fleas.  The pomps were caught on clams or clam-flavored fishbites (had a bag of fishbites in my tackle box and forgot about them until it was too late...).  The water was clean, warm and the pompano didn't need to be measured (all well over 11")

3-23-11

The whiting bite has finally arrived for all of Amelia Island. The cuts at the north and south end of Amelia Island are both teeming with whiting. Whether you are fishing the Nassau Sound or the Nassau River up to the Cumberland Sound jetties, you are catching whiting.

I personally crossed through Cumberland Sound several times this week and witnessed every boat anchored in the St. Marys Sound hooked up with whiting on the outgoing tide. Bells River, Nassau River, Amelia River and Lanceford Creek anglers are also reporting excellent catches of whiting.

Ed Holmberg reported the surf fishing is improving daily. Ron Miller has also reported improvement in catches this past week from American Beach. Geoff Weiss also reported an excellent morning fishing the surf from the north end this week.

As the water temperature rises, the long-awaited pompano bite should begin any day now.

Sheepshead fishing is also still on fire, whether you are an offshore head fisherman or an inshore structures angler you should be limiting out in no time. Fiddler crabs or small live shrimp have been doing the trick when targeting sheepshead.

3-23-11

Ocean piers: Surf fishing was slow last week as water temperatures dropped. But early this week, the surf was covered up in whiting. When you see the seiners working the beaches, you know they're here. However, west winds have muddied the water and pushed them out into deeper water. That will likely change for the better by the weekend.

3-30-11

The on-again, off-again surf fishing continues. Surf temperatures are high enough for the whiting to bite, but hard west winds over the weekend roiled up the water, making it inhospitable for the whiting and uninhabitable for the pompano which are trying to move north from Daytona Beach.

The forecast for the end of the week is much better, and we could see the first real pompano run by the weekend. But west winds are forecast again.

4-6-11

Ocean piers: Surf fishing has been up and down — mostly down — the past few days. Spanish mackerel and bluefish invaded the Jacksonville Beach Pier for a day and disappeared just as quickly.

Elsewhere: The surf fishing was good at Hanna Park. It’s one of the more consistent spots for finding whiting off the beach. The bream bite in the ponds should be good all week.

The Atlantic Saint A

Surf fishing has been poor all week after a great little run the week prior.

Whiting have disappeared. There are some nice black drum in the surf along with bluefish and undersized pompano. But they could be here thick and legal by the weekend.

A cobia was caught south of the pier this week, but the majority of them remain down around Cape Canaveral where they've been holding way too long. Redeye (vermillion snapper) fishing opened up last week.

Generally speaking, the fishing has been on the slow side, and those finding them are going past 100 feet to do it.

4-12-11

Everyone keeps waiting for the whiting to return. They're still waiting.

The water early in the week was clean and clear with surf temperatures around 69 degrees. That should bring the whiting to the beaches but isn't.

It's also exactly what the pompano holding down south of St. Johns County should have been waiting for - but apparently weren't.

Surf fishing has been hit-and-miss, with a lot more missing than hitting going on. There are some nice black drum in the surf, along with bluefish and the occasional redfish.

There have been few reports from offshore. Most of the boats that did make it out to or past the ledge found a few small dolphin and very few wahoo in the 30-40 pound range.

4-13-11 JAX

Surf anglers are reporting hit-and-miss days. Surf fishing should be fired off this time of year, but the reports have been pretty poor this past week.

The whiting are staying in deeper water, which is unusual for this time of year.

The pompano are biting, but most are having to be released for being too short.

Ed Holmberg reported catching a 2?-pound bull whiting from the surf on Monday and said overall his trip was good.

Joe Green has been reporting hit-and-miss days also - one day he is catching, the next he is struggling.

The whiting bite continues at the tips of the jetties and for anglers anchoring in the St. Marys Sound.

4-13-11

Surf disappointing, Whiting show up for a day, then disappear. Usually you can count on the blues though.

4-14-11

Ocean piers: It's been slow on the both the Jacksonville Beach and St. Johns County piers. Whiting will show up for a day or so, then disappear.

4-20-11

Along with the offshore and jetties, the backwater has heated up with catches of speckled trout, redfish, puppy drum and sheepshead. Unfortunately, the small bluefish have arrived; bring along plenty of live shrimp if you are a live-bait angler because you can't get away from the blues.

Amelia Island State Park wade fishermen are reporting slot redfish, trout and flounder using live mud minnows. The George Crady State fishing pier anglers are catching bluefish, whiting, puppy drum, sheepshead, slot redfish and the occasional Spanish mackerel. Fort Clinch State park anglers are reporting flounder, speckled trout, puppy drum, slot redfish and whiting, along with many bluefish.

Ocean piers: There was a good run of speckled sea trout Monday and Tuesday, with most of the folks on the Jacksonville Beach Pier limiting out with fish up to 4 pounds. Whiting, pompano, Spanish mackerel and sheepshead have been slow both in Jacksonville and on the St. Johns County Pier.

4-25-12

.Surf fishing has been tough. There are some mostly small whiting and enough pompano to keep it interesting. That may well change...get some clams - frozen is fine - you might try that. The whiting love them, and you're a lot more likely to entice a pompano. Saint Aug.

4-27-11 updated 5-4

George Crady bridge and Fort Clinch fishing pier anglers are catching sheepshead along the pilings. Whiting and puppy drum, along with an occasional slot red fish, are being caught in the deep holes around the pier and bridge fishing with cut bait or fresh shrimp on the bottom.

Floating a live shrimp just off the bottom from the George Crady State fishing pier or the Fort Clinch pier is producing speckled trout. The whiting bites continue on the banks of Fort Clinch and Amelia Island State Park.

Speckled trout and red fish are in the backwaters right now, and floating a live shrimp will give you plenty of success. The bluefish bite has calmed, possibly because of the arrival of the pogy pods. Mud minnows or live shrimp fished on a jig head around oyster bars, docks, rock piles on the low tide are producing flounder, red fish and puppy drum. Topwater plug enthusiasts are catching trout, reds, jack and blues early in morning and late in evening.

Surf fishing is still hit and miss. Pompano, whiting, blues, trout and puppy drum have been caught.

Good luck to those fishing this weekend, and I hope to see you at the festival. Until next week. Capt. Jim

5-4-11

Ocean piers: The water's been ugly around the piers, but that didn't seem to stop the black drum from biting at midweek. Dozens came over the rails. While they'll eat shrimp, they've been partial to fresh clams. Whiting are tiny and scarce. Pompano will show up if the water is clear.

5-11-11

Surf whiting action has been good at the north end of Amelia Island, and also near the island main beach, near Peters Point, and along American Beach during the first of flood and the last of outgoing tides. At Fernandina Inlet, big redfish to 40 inches are being caught near the “white can” off the tip of the south jetties during incoming tides. Whiting also are being caught there, including some “bulls” weighing to about 2 pounds.

The ubiquitous bluefish remain ? well, ubiquitous...fishing remains poor. The whiting are out of casting range in...There was a decent bite of both whiting and pompano down south of Marineland...north beaches, it's mainly bluefish. You can mitigate the bluefish

2-2-12

There were really no bottom fishing reports because there’s nothing much to catch with all the federal closures. Some cobia are being caught southeast of Matanzas in 100 feet of water.

The lousy surf fishing did pick up some this week. Some decent catches of whiting came from the shell beaches around South Ponte Vedra. A few pompano were caught as well. South of Marineland, the beach becomes steeper and there are areas throughout Flagler County where large coquina rocks are visible at low tide. A few guys fishing between the rocks were spanking slot redfish and stout black drum dunking dead shrimp.

2-8-12

The whiting bite in the inlet has slowed down, but that's a temporary thing.Bluefish are still all over the ICW.

There are still a lot of bluefish out there, so it doesn't get very slow. No pompano were reported but a few redfish were caught down near the Matanzas Inlet.

2-12-10 Is this 2012?

Ocean piers: The piers in the area have been slow all week. A few brave souls spent some time on the planks. A very few whiting were caught.

2-14-12 BEST BET

Whiting are biting in the surf from Fernandina to St. Augustine. Boaters are catching whiting at St. Marys inlet, Nassau Sound, St. Augustine inlet and the 312 bridge in St. Augustine.

2-15-12

Whiting in the 1-pound class are available in good numbers in the surf near Ponte Vedra Beach, at the St. Augustine Pier, the beaches south of Matanzas Inlet, Little Talbot Island surf, and near Fort Clinch at Fernandina Beach.

The Intracoastal Waterway

The redfish bite continues to be very good up in the creeks on lower tides. Trout are around. And because of the warm temperatures this winter, they’re still hitting topwater plugs early and late. Flounder are small and tough to find in any good numbers.

Sheepshead fishing should be super, but there were few reports this week. This is always the time of year to catch the biggest sheepshead of the year. The big females are carrying roe.

The inlet should be holding the biggest fish. South winds are forecast Saturday making the south jetties a good bet. Northwest winds Sunday would make the docks on the north side of the inlet a place worth looking at.

Whiting are being caught off the pier at Vilano Beach and they’re beginning to stack up on the sandbar outside the inlet again this week. Bluefish are thick all over the ICW.

The Atlantic

A few boats got out to the ledge early in the week but found the fishing very tough. Dolphin and tuna were nowhere and very few wahoo were hooked. Remember that the Conch House hosts its 3rd Annual Wahoo Challenge March 16-17. Go to conch-house.com for information.

A couple of the charter boats worked the local reefs and wrecks this week. There were no reports of cobia. There were, of course, plenty of black sea bass and red snapper — both still closed to fishing.

There was a surge in the whiting bite in the surf early in the week. That slowed down.

The few reports Wednesday were of small whiting and lots of blues. The big whiting seem to be out in the deeper water. Commercial netters are having a field day out past 30 feet. Your best bet now is to fish the lowest tides and your longest rods. If you can get out past the deepest bars, there are som

BEST BET

Whiting have turned on again with warm, calm weather along the Northeast Florida coast. Surf anglers soaking dead shrimp on bottom during clear, incoming tides are doing well.

Most traditional hot spots for coastal whiting weighing to 1 pound are yielding good catches. Some of the best locations include: the surf near Fort Clinch at the north end of Amelia Island; the beaches along Little Talbot Island; Hanna Park near Mayport; near the Jacksonville Beach Pier; North Beach north of St. Augustine; the larger sandbars in St. Augustine inlet; Anastasia Island south of St. Augustine; south of the St. Augustine Pier; and the beaches near Matanzas Inlet.

Fishing report for Feb. 24, 2012

BY JORDAN KAHN, STAFF WRITER http://www.news-journalonline.com/images/email.gif (jordan.kahn@news-jrnl.com)

Surf & PiersThe folks at the Flagler Beach Pier bait shop said sheepshead up to 8-pounds, drum to 7-pounds and bull whiting are being caught, with the best bite in the morning and after 3 p.m.

Ponce Inlet
Water surface temps are 62 degrees at the inlet and 65 in the surf. Anglers are getting bull reds in the 45-inch range and multiple hook-ups from schools of 4- to 7-pound weakfish, said Capt. Fred Robert. Manta rays are being sighted nearshore, signaling the beginning of spring migrations.

2-29-12 Whiting bite continues to improve in the surf. Try the holes around Crescent Beach.

3-2-12

Surf & Piers

Surf temperatures are back up to 69 degrees, but a last blast of winter expected this weekend is being forecast to bring head-high waves and knock water temps back down a couple of degrees, but fishermen have already spotted some manta rays, and it won't be much longer before spring baitfish migrations bring runs of barracuda, kings, Spanish macks and tarpon withiin range of the piers.
For now, commercial hook and liners working the beach are reporting consistent whiting activity and occasional but sizable pompano.
Ponce Inlet
Capt. Fred Robert said water temps in the inlet hit 70 degrees Wednesday and cobia have been sighted within 10 or 15 miles south of the inlet. Keeper-sized reds and just a few bulls and a ton of blues are bitting in the channel.

3-7-12

Whiting are in good supply, with most regional hot spots producing fish, including the Fort Clinch area at Fernandina Beach, Little Talbot Island, Hanna Park, near the Gate station at south Ponte Vedra Beach, North Beach near St. Augustine, and the beaches of Anastasia Island.

Some pompano also are being caught, but most are small.

Don Whitman in Fernandina Beach says lots of good-sized black drum are beginning to hit clam, shrimp and crab baits in the Amelia Island area, and a 70-pound fish was recorded in the Nassau River recently.

Whitman says big spotted sea trout and plenty of slot-sized red drum are available in the larger creeks around Amelia Island, with Egans perhaps the best. Top-water plugs at dawn are deadly, and an 8-pounder was taken by angler John Welsh at the south end of Amelia Island using a live shrimp.

Surf fishing has taken a real upturn. Nice whiting are being caught with black drum to 3-5 lbs. Reds are in the surf along with pesky blues. Pompano was starting down toward Flagler.

3-9-12 Steve master

Surf & Piers
High, choppy surf has made surf fishing difficult in recent days, but those toughing it out have found scattered success with some larger-than-average pompano, whiting and bluefish.
The pompano catches bode well for the near future when the surf calms down.
However, the dirty surf could also bring unwelcome visitors such as catfish and small sharks, said Capt. Todd Wynn of The Fishin' Hole in Port Orange.

3-14-12

Excellent surf fishing this week and should get better for the weekend. Lots of whiting and lots of black drum and some small pompano with them. The biggest pomps are south of Maineland.

With surf temperatures rising and the winds easing, fishing is on the upswing. Sydney Osteen at Sunglow Pier in Port Orange reports an uptick in pompano catches, with anglers also pulling in whiting, sheepshead and catfish.

Further north, fishermen frequenting the beach near Bellair Plaza in Ormond Beach report an unusual number of black drum in the surf, according to Gene Lytwyn at The Fishin' Hole.

Surf fishermen are having success from small redfish, some whiting and small pompano during periods of calm, clear water. Watch the weather before timing a trip to the beach, as well as to the piers at St. Augustine, Jacksonville Beach and Fernandina Beach. Decent Whiting at

Surf fishermen are reporting a "steady bite," according to Gene Lytwyn of The Fishin' Hole. Some larger bluefish, in the 5- and 6-pound range, have moved in, as have some 3- and 4-pound pompano. The whiting bite remains solid as well.

If you get into Bluefish thick, then…

Pompano are being landed at the Jacksonville Beach Pier. Also available are sea trout, plus there’s been plenty of whiting, sheepshead and small black drum. Whiting surf fishing also has been good from Ponte Vedra Beach to St. Augustine, and some giant pompano pushing 4 pounds have been reported.

It's only the first week of spring and fish counts are up across the board, including the catch in the surf. Capt. Todd Wynn, reporting out of The Fishin' Hole, said whiting and pompano are snapping up sand fleas and clams for anglers fishing from the beach.

The area piers have been extremely active in the morning this week with more big catches expected over the weekend. Rhonda Nelson, Sunglow Pier, said customers are snapping up red and black drum, bull whiting and Spanish mackerel. "We've seen some redfish at keeper size, like 24 to 26 inches," Nelson said. "There's been some nice size pompano up to 20 inches, but 16 is the average."

Clear water along the beach is unusual for this area and not good for pier or surf anglers.

Sunglow Pier's Rhonda Nelson was blunt: "It's been pretty slow out here," she said. "I was fishing out here all day Sunday and the water was so clear, you could see schools of fish coming right at the pier. Never got a bite."

The action rebounded Wednesday. Nelson said line-droppers were hooking redfish, black drum and whiting.

Saltwater fishing guru Gene Lytwyn of The Fishin' Hole said clear water is not good for fishermen.

"Fish feel safer in dirtier water," he said, adding that the clear-water phenomenon will "fade away within a week."

Spanish mackerel in the 16 to 20 inch range are available locally, chiefly off St. Augustine Inlet and the mouth of the St. Marys River. Trollers using silvery Clarke Spoons and planers are tallying the most mackerel.

Surf fishing has been very good from Matanzas Inlet to the Jacksonville Beach Pier, and also at Fort Clinch near Fernandina Beach. Anglers are catching large pompano, some sea trout, black drum (to 8 pounds), whiting and redfish. Fresh dead shrimp, sand fleas and clams claim most pompano, which are weighing to 5 pounds, and some catches up to 9 fish have been made recently during mid-incoming tides with clear water.

Surf fishing has been tough.

Surf & Piers

After several weeks of frenzied surf fishing, the wettest catch has slowed down a bit. Rhonda Nelson, manning the lookout at Sunglow Pier, said her plankers were hooking big bluefish and keeper-sized flounder.

The big news at Sunglow was a veteran hooking a 32 1/2-inch cobia beyond the surf line. The bad news? A cobia must be at least 33 inches to keep. "The guy who caught it, he knew the limits, and he knew he couldn't keep it," Nelson said. "He was very upset."

The water, which was crystal clear last week, is beginning to dirty up a little, but as Nelson said, "It's still pretty clear."

Up and down the beach, the report is about the same. Bull whiting and pompano mixed with a Spanish mackerel here and there. Those getting a line in the water before sunrise are having the best luck.

4-18-12

Surf fishermen are doing well from Ponte Vedra Beach to Matanzas Inlet, and from the Fort George area to Fernandina Beach. Pompano, some whiting, black drum, and redfish are primary species falling to anglers during the first of falling tides and the beginning of incoming tides.

Good numbers of jack crevalle, ladyfish, bluefish and some Spanish mackerel are reported in the lower St. Johns, from about Dames Point east to the river mouth.

Pier fishermen at St. Augustine, Jacksonville Beach and Fernandina Beach are having good days during falling tides for sea trout, black drum, redfish, some pompano, Spanish mackerel and sheepshead. “Got-cha” lures by Sea Striker have been producing Spanish. For those unfamiliar with the lure, it’s identical to the old Porter “Sea Hawk,” which has been around for at least 50 years, and is effective for sea trout and tarpon, too.

They're probably right.Surf fishing has been much slower all week. The pompano are here, but those doing all the damage have been fishing low tides with 13-foot rods and getting fresh sand fleas

Area piers are producing a potpourri of fish, with everything from the usual fare of whiting and bluefish to more unusual catches -- such as the big shark pulled from the Sunglow Pier in Port Orange to the cobia hooked earlier in the week at the Flagler Pier.

Surf fisherman, to their delight, are finding pompano unusually large for this time of year, according to Todd Wynn of the Fishin' Hole in Port Orange.

This is typically the season for smallish pompano, Wynn said.

Surf anglers are also getting good-sized whiting and the occasional drum.

4-25-12

Surf fishing will improve steadily with calm weather and clear water, and could be superb by the weekend. North and south of St. Augustine, and the north and south ends of Amelia Island are prime surf spots, with large pompano, whiting, sea trout and Spanish mackerel available.

Spanish mackerel are in good supply in area waters, and locating bait pods is the ticket to success. Watch for birds, and fish near tide lines and color change areas at inlet mouths. Spanish are weighing to 2 pounds, and quickly hit homemade straw lures, and size 1 and OO Clarke Spoons. Use a short trace of single-strand wire to prevent cut offs from toothy mackerel. Fernandina Inlet has been especially good for Spanish during the last of incoming and first of outgoing tides.

Surf fishing has been tough, mainly small whiting and a few pomps. This could change with north winds.

4-27-12

Nelson said the pier was wild with activity earlier this week.

"They were catching reds, flounder, blues, whiting, black drum, huge pompano and sheepshead," she said in one breath.

The pompano ranged from 15 to 18 inches. Donald Parksey from Don's Bait & Tackle in Port Orange said his customers reported pompano and a smattering of black drum being taken from the breakers.

5-2-12

Surf fishing has been a little slow in the Jacksonville to Mickler’s Landing area, but good action from large pompano and some whiting is reported from the Fernandina Beach area and north of St. Augustine to the Gate station region. Hale reports an outstanding turnout of more than 100 fishermen participated in the Florida Surf Casters tournament last weekend, with plenty of good-size pompano and whiting taken.

If you have never seen a barracuda close up, now is the time to get to the Sunglow Pier. Barracuda look like torpedoes with sharp teeth.

"We've seen some swirling in the water," said Mike Schultz, who added no one has caught one of the toothy creatures.

Sunglow is yielding whiting, sheepshead, black drum, small flounders and quite a few blue fish.

"We're looking for the flounder coming in real heavy real soon," Schultz said. "We've had ideal weather. There's a small chop, but it's not really windy. It's been almost perfect."

5-9-12

Rick Hale of Rick’s Bait & Tackle in Jacksonville Beach says plenty of big whiting are still being caught by surf anglers, with some nice pompano mixed in. The area around 6th Avenue South at Jacksonville Beach has been good during dawn incoming tides. Whiting also are available at Fernandina Beach.

Jacksonville Beach Pier fishermen have been getting a few whiting, but black drum action has slowed.

5-11-12

The Sunglow Pier warmed up the last few days,

according to Rhonda Nelson, who said she's seen black drum beasts pulled up

from the sea.

"They are in the 8- to 10-pound range," Nelson said. Fish that size ride the

elevator up to the planks. Beefy fish must be hoisted by a pier net.

"It's a big basket net," Nelson said. "You got to find somebody to help you

lower it down, then work together to guide the fish into the basket."

Anglers don't need the basket for other fish pulled from the salt water.

Nelson said sheepshead, pompano, blue fish and skinny flounder have graced

Sunglow this week.

At The Flagler Beach Pier, a spokesman said the iconic ocean dock has had a

nice catch of pompano, whiting, blues and good-sized flounder.

Those fishing off area beaches are catching their fill of pompano and

whiting. The two hot spot are Ormond Beach and Daytona Beach Shores.

5-16-12

Whiting have been real small and mixed with tons of small spots. The weatherNortheast winds are forecast from Friday through Sunday. Fishimg is slowing down as the weather heats up.
Pompano are on the downswing.

8-3-12

Mostly whiting and a few reds from surf.

Rhonda Nelson, Sunglow Pier, went for a dip and noticed the upwelling chill in the water.

"It was cold," she said.

Unfortunately, so is the fishing at Sunglow. There are a lot of baitfish, so many that anglers are casting for mullet. The only catch has been whiting.

The Flagler Beach Pier has had a "moderate" bite the last week. A pier employee said the best bites have been flounder, sheepshead and whiting.

The Daytona Beach Pier has yielded whiting, black drum, sheepshead and reds, according to Wynn.

The surf has been giving up mostly whiting and a few reds from the shore. Greenstein has been working his kayak behind the breakers and caught some bonita and a false albacore, up to 13 pounds.

8-22-12

The fishing in the surf and from the pier has slowed down due to the drop in water temperature. When we get periods of west wind it pushes the warm water out and it is replaced by colder water. This occurrence is known as an “upwelling”.

lots of whiting in the surf, good size and quantity. Catching whiting reds and sheepshead from pier. Pier has come back to life

9-6-12

Sunglow Pier is having what Rhonda Nelson described as a “patriotic catch” this week. “Whiting, blues and reds,” she said. “That's red, white and blue.”

Sunglow is having a nice run on keeper-sized reds, which Nelson described as “all in the over-20-inch range.” The pier has become a magnet for mangrove snappers in recent days.

Anglers are enjoying a flounder catch, too, although Nelson had this sad story to tell.

“We had a man the other night who caught a big flounder, in the 20-inch range, but he lost it,” she said. “They tried to get it into a net (at water level), but it wiggled away.”

A spokesman at The Flagler Beach Pier said fishermen are nabbing jacks, whiting and red in rough surf, which is making “the water a little dirty.”

The Daytona Beach Pier is having a huge run on slot-sized reds, plus a bounty of drum, sheepshead, blues and whiting.

From the surf, anglers are catching mostly whiting and blues. Wynn said the pompano will be lurking beyond the waves in about a month.

9-6-12

Surf fishing has been good for anglers chasing whiting and some pompano near St. Augustine.

9-13-12

“We are doing really good out here,” Nelson chirped. “We are catching reds up to 30 inches. Of course, those go back because the slot is 18 to 27 inches.”

In addition to reds, Nelson said anglers are up to their gills in blues and flounder, which have mostly been legal-sized.

“Every flounder caught out here is over 12 inches,” she said.

The bait of choice has been live or frozen shrimp or mullet.

The Daytona Beach Pier is another hot spot for reds, blues and flounder, while the Flagler Beach Pier is yielding sheepshead, reds and black drum. One intense angler caught a 16-pound, 12-ounce king Tuesday.

The surf has been rough because of the train of disturbances far out in the Atlantic. The water has cleared in Flagler. Surf fishermen are nabbing whiting, blues and pompano, which should be more abundant in coming weeks.

9-19-12

Jacksonville Beach Pier fishermen are having fair to good success for black drum, redfish, bluefish, sheepshead, whiting and a few flounder.
