On December 10, 2015, President Obama signed into law the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). ESSA reauthorizes the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) and eliminates much of the prescriptiveness of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) and the ESEA Flexibility Waivers. On May 26, 2016, the United States Department of Education (USDE) released draft regulations outlining requirements for the state accountability plan and for implementing ESSA. After consultation with a large and diverse group of stakeholders, in October 2016, NYSED plans to develop a state plan to present to USDE. Once the plan has been approved by the Board of Regents, the Governor, and USDE, NYSED will be providing updated information on institutional accountability.
