Real Life Incident

“A vessel was bound to load gas oil in Ventspils,
Latvia. For tank cleaning, it was estimated that for
200 m of water, oil collected during tank cleaning
would be 30 m, and freshwater to be additional 50
m3. All this washing was planned to be
accommodated in ab residual oil tank
which had a
capacity of 320 m and contained m of oily water
from the previous voyage. As the tank cleaning was
completed, the oil collected was found to be 50 mi iThus oily water mixture totaled tom and
exceeded the capacity of the residual tank to hold.
Thus for merely m extra, one slop tank had to
contain the balance of residue which decreased the
loadable tanks from 14 to 13 and cargo carrying
capacity of the vessel by 1200 tones, thus altering the
maximum loadable cargo which the vessel had
committed earlier

Various lines such as cargo, bunker, ballast, fire, and foam lines onboard tankers are required to be pressure tested once in a year to the prescribed pressures.
165. l Marine Insight A hydraulic pump is provided with a flexible hose having an operating lever for compressing the hydraulic fluid, a three-way valve connection, and a pressure gauge. Procedure for Pressure Testing
• Fill the required line with water
• Open the discharge side valves of the pump
• Open the cargo sea chest and take suction
• Start the pump and open the main deck crossover valve
