James M. McPherson is George Henry Davis 1986 Professor Emeritus of
United States History at Princeton University. He is the author of more than a dozen books on the era of the Civil War and Reconstruction, and the editor of numerous additional works. In 1989 he won the Pulitzer Prize in History for his book Battle Cry of Freedom The Civil War Era and in 1998 he won the Lincoln Prize for his book For Cause and Comrades Why Men Fought in
the Civil War. His most recent publications include This Mighty Scourge
(2007) and “Tried by War Abraham Lincoln as Commander in Chief (2008).

Institute in Oxford, and an elected member of the American Antiquarian
