Transcontinental Railroad Guided Notes Intro:

Problem

  • Transportation is key to the survival of communities out west

Solution

  • Build the Transcontinental Railroad

The nation needed a TRANSCONTINENTAL railroad in order to TRANSPORT goods from one coast to another.

People could use telegraphs to TRANSMIT messages from one coast to the other.

A TRANSATLANTIC ship sails across the Atlantic Ocean.

People often TRANATLANTIC, or move from one school to another.

Problem:

  • Northerners and Southerners argued over whether the R.R. route should run through the North (Central route) or South

Solution:

To encourage development of the Transcontinental Railroad, the government passed the RAILROAD PACIFIC ACT in 1862

  • Gave SUBSIDIES, or land and MONEY grants to aid R.R construction

Why were towns eager to pay for R.R companies to build tracks near their towns? EXPLAIN.

RAILROADS WOULD PROVIDE A MEANS FOR GOODS TO BE SHIPPED TO THAT CITY, THE CITY WOULD THRIVE IF IT HAD GOODS
