EXTREME EVIL by Ray Black
True crime | 8 pages b+w photos | Futura | June 2011
Encountering crime on any level will make you stop and consider how you view the world. A burglary, a mugging, even witnessing a minor theft can leave a person feeling shocked, vulnerable and unable to trust others. Imagine then how it must feel to come face-to-face with the kind of extreme crime that can only be conceived by a truly evil mind. Acts so powerful that they can scar a whole community, even an entire nation, for generations. The perpetrators manage to achieve the kind of notoriety only usually afforded to Hollywood icons. In their own twisted imaginations they sit in a kind of evil Hall of Fame among others of their kind: Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, Andrei Chikatilo, all jostling for the top spot. Ray Black is an investigative journalist based in Brighton.
VOODOO KILLERS by Joseph Carlson
True crime | 448pp | 8 pages b+w photos | Futura | June 2011
The art of murder knows many forms, but few are more harrowing than murder committed for reasons of the supernatural or for ritual purposes. Supposedly serving a higher cause, they are often little more than self-gratifying acts to satisfy a blood-lust. VOODOO KILLERS chronicles the disturbing history of ritualistic killing around the world, with shocking examples of human sacrifice from past and present, voodoo hexes, sexual slavery and satanic murder. It is a history that incorporates vampires, serial killers, rapists and kidnappers as well as practitioners of institutionalised killing such as the Aztec high priests and Spanish Inquisitors who murdered in the name of religion. Murder does not come much worse than this – premeditated, organised, ritualised and, in the past, accepted as permissible. The Voodoo Killers stand alone in the annals of horror. Joseph Carlson works as a private investigator and crime writer.
GLADIATORS by Gordon Kerr
True crime | 448pp | 8 pages b+w photos | Futura | August 2011
Around 180 CE in the lavish amphitheatres of the Roman Empire, trained gladiators would enter the arena, ready to fight to the death. Armed with a weapon, the gladiator would face his opponent; a wild animal ready to strike, or a condemned criminal looking to save his own life. The duel would begin and the bloodthirsty spectators would cheer, applauding every severed limb and spurt of blood. There could be only one outcome in the gladiatorial arena – one dead body, and one victorious champion. The barbaric Roman gladiatorial duels were a million miles away from the relatively sophisticated pistol duels of the 18th century. A gentleman’s duel would be proposed following a dispute, no matter how trivial, and the two opponents would meet in the ‘Field of Honour’ at dawn, armed with a gun. The duellers would stand back-to-back with loaded pistols, and at the drop of a handkerchief, they would walk ten paces then turn, and fire. The last man standing would win the argument. Gordon Kerr is a writer and editor who has worked in bookselling, publishing and the wine trade.
SPREE KILLERS by Gordon Kerr
True crime | 448pp | 8 pages b+w photos | Futura | April 2011
20 April 1999, Columbine High School, Colorado, USA. Lunchtime. Enter Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold armed with shotguns. Pumping bullets into two classmates they left one dead and the other fighting for his life. They went on the rampage through the school leaving in their wake a trail of bloody death and destruction. In the aftermath fifteen were dead, including the killers, and twenty-four were seriously injured. It is hard to understand why two seventeen-year-olds carried out this atrocious attack, but sadly, this urge to kill, whether meticulously planned or frighteningly spontaneous, cannot be predicted or prevented. On 5 November 2009, Nidal Malik Hasan was sitting at a desk at Fort Hood military base, just outside Killeen, Texas, awaiting a routine medical test. After a few uneventful seconds had passed, Hasan leapt out of his chair, produced two handguns and sprayed bullets around the room, killing thirteen people and injuring thirty. This attack lasted just ten minutes. SPREE KILLERS examines the events surrounding some of the world’s most shocking mass killings; from the loner school kid with a shotgun to postal workers that made one too many deliveries. Gordon Kerr has worked in bookselling, publishing and the wine trade.
CONQUISTADORS by John Pemberton
True crime | 448pp | 8 pages b+w photos | Futura | August 2011
In the 16th century the King of Spain issued his soldiers with a three pronged mission: to find gold, spread the word of Christianity and claim new territories for Spain. The conquistadors, as they became known, set off into the world to do just that, and nothing was to stand in their way. Their amazing journeys took them from Florida to Machu Picchu via the Amazon and Lake Titicaca. Their epic voyages revolutionised world geography and society was transformed by the bizarre foods they brought back – potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, pineapple, tobacco and chocolate, as well as exotic human freight. However, there is a much darker side to the story, for as the King of Spain sat in his court watching Mexican jugglers, his blood-stained emissaries massacred Aztec warriors, raping, branding and enslaving their women and murdering their kings in the name of religion. They spread European diseases such as smallpox, malaria and typhoid, decimating the local populations with tens of millions dying in their wake. John Pemberton is a freelance writer who specialises in ancient and modern history.
SNIPERS AND SHOOTERS by Bill Wallace
True crime | 448pp | 8 pages b+w photos | Futura | April 2011
To kill with one shot needs a specialist. In war, choosing a perfect concealed position and knowing exactly when to pull the trigger takes a special talent. But some such as John Wilkes Booth, murderer of President Abraham Lincoln, prove that any madman with a gun can make history in a random moment. In 1963 President John F. Kennedy was killed by shots to his back and head. Despite being surrounded by security and in a public place, his killer knew where to hide and when to shoot. For three weeks in October 2002, a sniper in a Chevrolet Caprice terrorised Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia. In these three weeks, and at various times and locations, ten people were shot dead and three were critically injured after being struck by the mysterious marksman. Two days after the last murder police identified the sniper and his accomplice - their murderous road trip was over. Bill Wallace is a former detective inspector and crime scene investigator from Glasgow, who began a career in true crime journalism after retiring from the force.

VOGUE MODEL: The Faces of Fashion by Robin Derrick and Robin Muir
Photography | 272pp | full colour photos | Little, Brown | October 2010
A stunning photographic history of the world's most beautiful and iconic women -- the Vogue cover girls and supermodels -- from past to present
Throughout history, fashion models have held a curious position. While their faces were instantly recognisable, virtually nothing else was known about them. In most cases, not even their names. But their impression upon Vogue’s readership has always been considerable – they reflect and represent the ever-changing ideal of beauty. It was models such as Fiona Campbell-Walker in Britain, and Lisa Fonssagrieves in the US who were the first to become household names, and to achieve the glamour and prestige that come with worldwide fame. The supermodels of the 90s turned the profession into a billion-dollar industry. ‘We don’t wake up for less than $10,000 a day’ Linda Evangelista famously claimed. Shining a light on these women’s lives, VOGUE MODEL uses photography and illustrations from more than 90 years of Vogue’s history to tell the fascinating story of the real faces of fashion. Robin Derrick has worked as art director of The Face, Italian Elle, Glamour France and Arena magazines. He now juggles his time between his role as creative director at Vogue and his photography commissions. Robin Muir is a writer, curator and former picture editor of Vogue.

*THE LOST PHOTOGRAPHS OF CAPTAIN SCOTT by David M. Wilson
Photography | 176pp | 100 b+w photos | Little, Brown | October 2011
A truly astounding book revealing Captain Scott's final expedition through the pictures he took himself
Shocking though it seems, the existence of photographs taken by Captain Scott himself during his last expedition to the Antarctic had largely been forgotten. THE LOST PHOTOGRAPHS OF CAPTAIN SCOTT showcases Scott’s personal photographs and gives us an astonishing record which is refreshing in its immediacy, almost to the point of being subversive. These photographs cut through the swathes of a century of commentary and allow Scott, the man, and his passion for scientific exploration to shine, once again, from the annals of our history. The stunning photographs are accompanied by text from Polar historian Dr. David M Wilson, the great-nephew of the Chief of the Scientific Staff, Dr. Edward Wilson, who died with Captain Scott and his fellow explorers.
Approximate specifications: 250 x 280mm trimmed page size (landscape), 176 pages, printed on 157 gsm matt art paper. Approx 100 black and white photographs. Jacketed hardback, sewn in sections with head and tail bands and four colour endpapers. Four colour jacket, matt laminate finish with spot varnish.
