Information about all deaths registered in England and Wales is held by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) Death registration for Scotland and Northern Ireland is held by the National Records of Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA), respectively. In Scotland a death must be registered within eight days compared with to five days in England, Wales and Northern Ireland,. However the definitions, classifications and methods used in mortality statistics are broadly comparable across the four countries. All four countries use ICD-10v2010 to code cause of death.
