Scopes Monkey Trial –
Dayton, TN trial covering the issue of evolution in public schools
John T. Scopes taught evolution and was defended in court by Clarence Darrow; the prosecution was headed by William Jennings Bryan
No scientific evidence was allowed in court
Scopes was found guilty and paid a fine (the ACLU paid it for him)
The case symbolized the growing chasm between urban and rural America
