Dear Ms. Doe:


The purpose of this letter is to respond to your request for reconsideration of materials in the media center collection. Following the procedure prescribed in Cobb County School System Administrative Rule IJK, the (name of School) Media Committee was convened on (date) to review the book, (name of book), by (name of author). The committee consisted of school staff and community/parent members. After a thorough evaluation of the book, which includes reading the entire book and carefully considering the specific objections, the committee voted unanimously to keep the book in the media center collection.
Appeal beyond the (name of school) Appeal Committee requires submitting a written request to the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction within ten (10) working days using the Instructional Materials Appeal Form.

How to Weed

The Do’s:

• Do know your district policy for discarding

• Do remove library identifying marks

• Do trade books in good condition to another library or used book dealer

• Do donate books in good condition to charitable organizations

• Do sell books in good condition to the public or a used book dealer

• Do recycle materials that cannot be traded, donated, or sold

• Do weed regularly to avoid discarding large amounts of materials at one time
The Don’ts:

• Don’t dump large amounts of discarded materials in the dumpster

• Don’t sell, donate, or trade books that are outdated or in very poor condition

• Don’t store weeded materials to keep from throwing them out

• Don’t dump weeded materials onto classroom teachers

Titles on local history or by local authors

School publications (like year books)

Titles on current reading lists

Out-of-print titles that are still useful and irreplaceable.

Biographical titles

Local history

Regional settings

Unusual illustrations/well know artists

Special merit/award books

Annuals/yearbooks

Items that may circulate under different classification

Items included in currently used indexes

Reference materials not outdated by other materials
