Means of exercising Power

  1. Collective Bargaining or Trade Union: Organized trade unions can through their activities force the government of a country to revert some of its decisions on state policies especially when such policies do not favour its members. They make use of boycotts, protests, lockouts, partial strikes and total strikes to achieve their aims.

  2. Organs or Arms of Government: The organs of government namely the legislature, executive and judiciary exercise political power in the state. Essentially, the legislature is concerned with the making of laws, the executive enforces and implements the laws and decisions of the. legislature while the judiciary interprets the law and punishes breakers

  3. Through Coercion or Force: Power can be exercised through force and other coercive instruments. This is the use of force on a person in order to bring about compliance or desired change in that person for example, a thief in possession of a gun exercises coercive power on his victim(s) through the use of the gun.


AUTHORITY

This is defined as the right to give orders or command to others who see it as a duty to obey. Authority is legitimate power.

According to Max Weber, authority is the right to command while power is the ability to command. Thus, authority is power recognized as rightful and accepted as valid. The power of authority is derived from one's position in office and the role the person plays within the organization
