Whitepaper - Empowering Business Users for the Next Era of Digital Transformation

The state of business-led automation
Stuck between individual and
enterprise modernization
As organizations build out a foundation for digital business, the IT organization and the LOB are generally aligned with the core objectives of modernization. Increasing productivity and efficiency, coupled with improving product and service quality, remain top of mind for both groups. They also agree that silos area major barrier to streamlined workflows and data sharing (89% of respondents) and make this a consideration as they map out high-value automation opportunities. Past these basic business tenets is where LOB and IT digital modernization objectives begin to diverge.
For instance, LOB is far more interested in pursuing efforts that strengthen the relationship between IT and business professionals (46% compared to 39% of IT) as part of digital transformation. For its part, IT is far more invested incoming up with ways to bolster business agility—in particular, helping organizations respond faster to new opportunities and risks (44% vs. 36% of LOB respondents).
Managing daily workflows and key data remains a mostly or completely manual effort at a good number of companies (21% of respondents. More than one-third
(40%) have advanced to enable mostly automatic updates, meaning users create and update workflows using software, but lean on the occasional manual intervention to input or connect to the right data. Only 8% of companies responding to the IDG survey have graduated to completely automated updates with little to no ongoing management by business users.
Business users know the day-to-day challenges and opportunities far better than IT ever will, so they are more motivated to solve problems.

Pulse
At companies where business innovators are stepping up to create and leverage their own digital solutions and automations, most of the activity is targeted at the individual or team level. According to the IDG survey, more than three-quarters (76%) of responding companies are building solutions that benefit individual workers or specific teams, which means solutions are not being deployed or leveraged enterprise-wide. This is despite the fact that both IT and LOB survey respondents agree that business-led development practices can benefit enterprise use cases.
At the same time, there are discrepancies in how IT and LOB view their progress with business-led customization and automation, as well as activating data. IT is more likely to report that an organization has graduated its busi- ness-led efforts to fuel both departmental and enterprise modernization strategies (59% compared to only
49% of LOB. In reality, however, only 32% of responding companies are using automation and customization tools to pursue enterprise projects on a regular or limited basis. Only around one-third (30%) are extending automation and modernization efforts beyond individual teams to multiple departments outside of their domain. See Figure 2.)
