They say two is better than one, and that is true for the Grimke sisters. Sarah and Angelina Grimke were born at the turn of the nineteenth century. Back then, people expected women to take care of a home and children and leave all serious matters to men. Men were responsible for decisions about laws and government, and only men could own land and vote. However, the Grimke sisters did not follow society’s rules.
The sisters were active abolitionists in the movement to end slavery. They were the first women to speak publicly against slavery. In 1838, Angelina became the first woman to speak to a legislative group when she gave a speech to the Massachusetts State Legislature. The sisters also joined other strong women, including Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, in rallying for women’s right to vote. In her writing, Sarah compared women with slaves because women had very few rights.
Many people criticized women for speaking about political issues, but the Grimke sisters did not stop. Even after the end of slavery, they continued to speak out for equal rights for all people.
