Once it is determined which essay question will be written about and identified the main problem to be addressed, it is useful to organize thoughts quickly. A graphic organizer is one means to help plan and visualize an answer in an effective and efficient manner.
There are many types of graphic organizers, but for history questions, a network tree can be an effective and quick means to plan answers. This device defines the problem and suggests the broat themes and support materials useful to planning an answer.
Examine the network tree for the essay question below:
“Between 1801 and 1825, the United States achieved more of its foreign policy goals at the bargaining table than on the battlefield.”
Assess the validity of this statement.
From this sample network tree, it is clear that this student plans to agree with the statement. He/she will account form some military achievements, but the preponderance of t he argument and evidence will support the idea that the Louisiana Purchase, Treaty of Ghent, Adams-Onis Treaty, Rush-Bagot Treaty, and Monroe Doctrine had a more profound impact on America’s place in the world form 1801 to 1825 than its martial efforts.
The tree can be “rooted” further into the question by adding details to each subtopic. This takes time, however, which is at a premium on the free response essay section. The advantage of the network tree is that it gives a quick visual path to follow when preparing to answer the question.
