1. Musical Styles:



American Influenced Music

-American tradition and European Tradition was Introduced

-They mad Music an education curriculum

FORMS:

-Classical: Includes both western Classical and the art music composed by Filipinos

-Semi-Classical: Music usually heard on semi-formal musical events like open air concert, programs, parades, singing contest, informal concerts…

-POP/Popular music: Music created by Filipinos using western pop forms and local music tradition:

1. Reggae: Jamaican pop music Style, Combination of West Indian and afro-American styles

2. Rock: A form of pop music characterized by fast rhythm, heavy metal instruments, and youth oriented

3. Rap: A rhythm half sung, half spoken style often enhanced by electronic effect

4. Ballad: Usually a love song in slow tempo that tells a story

5. Protest Song: Songs that are made popular by political events like rallies, elections, assembly which raises national sentiments, written to stir emotions, generates support or cause doubts

6. Novelty Songs: A song with humorous/unusual lyrics

7. Modern Gospel: Distinctly Religious Music

8. Disco: A combination of fast jazz tempo

9. Pinoy Folk: A kind of pop noted in folk tradition

10. Manila Sound: Usually in disco style/ dance style music making use of TAGLISH

11. Ethnic Pop: Seeks to integrate ethnic elements, into pop culture

12. Pinoy Jazz Fusion: The Fusing of Elements of rhythm and blues and the heavy highly amplified variety of rock music


2. TEXTURE:

-Refers to the Thickness and Thinness of Sounds

KINDS:

-MONOPHONY: Single INDEPENDENT melody WITHOUT accompaniment



-HOMOPHONY: Single INDEPENDENT melody WITH accompaniment

-POLYPHONY: 2 or more independent melodies played or sung simultaneously WIHTOUT accompaniment

-Mixed Texture: 2 or more independent melodies played or sung simultaneously WITH accompaniment
3. TONE COLOR or Timbre:

- It is the quality of sound in music

- it may be determined by the physical Structure of the sound-producing source, the material it was made of and the way it is being played


  1. Strings ( Chordophone)

  2. Woodwind ( Aerophone) * I didn’t put what instruments are in which class.

  3. Brass(aerophone) because you should now by now…..

  4. Percussion ( Idiophone)

SACHS AND HORNBOSTELS:

Chordophone: Plucking, Blowing, Hitting, VIBRATING body

Aerophone: Vibrating air Column

Idiophone: hitting, banging, scraping, VIBRATING body

Electrophone: Electric Current


4. MAGUINDANAO MUSIC:

-in the Maguindanao region, the most performed instrument perhaps is the gong ensemble called PALABUNIBUNYAG, which means ensemble of loud-sounding instruments




  1. Kulintang: 8 Gongs of Graduated Size

  2. Gandingan: A set of 4 hanging thin-rimmed gongs

  3. Babandir: SMALL thin-rimmed gong with a hollow boss

  4. Agong: Wide-rimmed gong….sometimes comes in pairs

  5. dabakan: Goblet shaped drum

PIECES:


BINALIG: Played to express different feelings like joy, love, anger….

SINULOG: Relates to loneliness and sentimental feelings. It is said that these pieces can make a listener cry and it is best played at night or at early dawn where there is great silence

TIDTU: Used to display one’s virtuosity and these are often heard in musical competitions

TAGUNGO: Exclusively played for rituals. It is used to accompany a dance called SAGAYAN

*The Piece we Played is “TAGUNGGO”

5. FILIPINO composers of 70’s and 80’s

-MARCELO ADONAY:

-Was referred to as the Palestrina of the Philippines

-He Wrote Many Great Religious Compositions



-Julian Felipe (1861 – 1944)

- Some of his compositions were “Aurorita, Danza”, “Motete al Santisimo”, and “Cintas y Flores”

-He Made Our Philippine National Anthem



-Francisco Santiago (1889 – 1947)

-Composer, Pianist, Teacher

- His First Song Was “ANAK DALITA”

- He was considered the father of Philippine Sonata

-Nicanor Abelardo (1893 – 1934)

-Composer, Pianist, Teacher

-Among His Known works were “Nasaan Ka Irog”, “Kundiman ng Luha”, Mutya ng Pasig”, “HImutok” and “Ikaw RIn”



-Antonio Molina (1894 – 1980)

-National Artist In Music

-His Most Widely Known Work was “Hatinggabi” a paice for violin and piano



-Constancio De Guzman (1903 – 1982)

-COMPOSER

-He Compoed and recorded a lot of songs like “Bayan Ko” and “Babalik ka rin”



-Lucio San Pedro (1913 – 2002)

-National Artist In Music

- He was the man behin the philosophy “Creative Nationalism”

- He made the poveda alma mater

-Levi Celerio (1910 – 2002)

-Great Lyricist, Violinist

-National Artist in Music

- He mad the Theme Song of the film “Dalagang Bukid”

- Celerio was also listed in the guiness book of record for being the only man who could play music on a leaf
