Lake Atitlan is one of the major lakes of Guatemala and is located in the department of Solola, at 1562 meters above sea level, making it the highest peak in the lake country (INSIVUMEH, nd).
The lake is of volcanic origin and lies in a product of a boiler explosion that blew some volcano long time ago (Gil, A., 1999).
This is a very deep lake, with over 330 meters maximum depth and an average depth of 220 meters. The volume of water varies between 24 and 25 cubic kilometers and although its calculated area of 130 square kilometers, also varies.
Has around several villages receiving the names of the apostles, Three volcanoes are part of the landscape: the volcano San Pedro, Atitlan volcano and the volcano Tolimán. It is the second largest lake in area, only surpassed by the Lake Izabal, and he is one of the most important tourist attractions of the country.
