By U.S. Fire Administration StaffAs we move closer to winter and home fire deaths begin to increase, the U.S. Fire Administration and the National Fire Protection Association remind everyone that fire safety is especially important in the coming months. USFA and NFPA are sponsoring a special initiative - Put a Freeze on Winter Fires - to get the word out. Each winter, an estimated 108,400 home fires occur in the United States, resulting in 945 deaths and $1.7 billion in property loss. Space heaters account for about one third of home heating fires and approximately 80 percent of the home heating fire deaths. Cooking is the leading cause of winter home fires. Winter home fires occur mainly in the early evening hours. The USFA and NFPA recommend these safety tips to prevent winter home fires:

U.S. Emergency Management Looking Back to Look Forward December 14, 2011 -- 12:00 Noon Eastern As our last program for 2011, EMForum.org is pleased to host a one hour presentation and interactive discussion Wednesday, December 14, beginning at 12:00 Noon Eastern time (please convert to your local time). At the time of year when it is traditional to look to the past while anticipating the future, our program will review the development of emergency management over several decades and what we can learn from this history to inform further development in the decades to come. Our guest will be Claire B. Rubin, noted emergency management researcher and President of Claire B. Rubin & Associates. Ms. Rubin is the author of the book Emergency Management: The American Experience 1900-2005, which she is in the process of updating for publication in the near future. The companion Century Timeline graphically illustrates the interplay of events and policymaking that have brought us to where we are today. NOAA: U.S. Sets Record With a Dozen Billion-Dollar Weather Disasters in One YearSource: NOAA, 12/7/11
To date, the U.S. set a record with 12 separate billion dollar weather/climate disasters in 2011, with an aggregate damage total of approximately $52 billion. This record year breaks the previous record of nine billion-dollar weather/climate disasters in one year, which occurred in 2008. Previously only 10 events were reported; the two new billion-dollar weather and climate events added to the 2011 total include: · The Texas, New Mexico, Arizona wildfires event, now exceeding $1 billion, had been previously accounted for in the larger Southern Plains drought and heatwave event. This is in line with how NOAA has traditionally accounted for large wildfire events as separate events. · The June 18-22 Midwest/Southeast Tornadoes and Severe Weather event, which just recently exceeded the $1 billion threshold.
The National Preparedness System Description is the second deliverable required under PPD-8: National Preparedness. Specifically, it identifies six components to improve national preparedness for a wide range of threats and hazards. The system description explains how as a nation we will build on current efforts, many of which are already established in the law and have been in use for many years. These six components include: 1. Identifying and assessing risks; 2. Estimating capability requirements; 3. Building or sustaining capabilities; 4. Developing and implementing plans to deliver those capabilities; 5. Validating and monitoring progress made towards achieving the National Preparedness Goal; and 6. The CIP Report is a monthly, electronic newsletter for professionals in industry, government, and academia who have an interest in critical infrastructure protection (CIP). The newsletter provides the latest information about CIP including emerging legislation, government initiatives and leaders, and academic endeavors. All versions of The CIP Report are available in The CIP Report Archive with a complete listing of all volumes of The CIP Report organized by date and topic. The Center for Infrastructure Protection and Homeland Security (CIP/HS), originally called the CIP Project, is located in the George Mason University School of Law. The Center received initial funding in 2002 and enjoyed subsequent renewal through the current fiscal year. Executive management of the grant is through The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). As the project expanded, on-going activities were leveraged to generate new funding that matured the project scope to address unexplored areas of critical infrastructure protection. By 2004, the CIP Project grant had evolved into a family of projects under the overall umbrella of the Center for Infrastructure Protection and Homeland Security (CIP/HS), featuring core research (NIST-funded) and contracted research projects. Additional funding sources include, but are not limited to, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Battelle, and SANDIA National Laboratories.
