Case reports/series
Eleven (11) case reports/series were found and are listed in Table 4. These indicate that there may be value in dose reduction/cessation when patients complain of apathy or emotional blunting symptoms which are associated in time with SSRI treatment, with complete resolution of the symptoms. The pediatric case series warn that the apathy symptoms can be subtle, have a delayed onset, and patients often have poor insight into their apathy
While most of the studies reviewed here have positive results that seem to confirm the association between SSRI treatment and emotional blunting/apathy, they are generally of poor design and methodology, and no clear conclusion can be drawn about prevalence of the association or causality.
