Accelerated College Education (ACE) Program Information and Interest/Placement
Packet
ACE Program Overview
The ACE program is designed for motivated people who are working full-time, want to attend college full-time and are ready to take college-level coursework by the time the program begins. The program features accelerated classes offered in two formats: hybrid (in-person on Tues/Thurs evenings plus online instruction) and purely online. This structure allows a student to complete their degree in 19 months.
ACE Program Basics
(more info available online at http://www.shastacollege.edu/ACE)
-
At this point in time, we are offering 4 degrees:
-
Business: Associate in Science for Transfer (AS-T.1001)
-
Business: Associate of Science General Studies (non-transfer) (AS. 1497)
-
Psychology: Associate in Arts for Transfer (AA-T.1006)
-
Social Sciences: Associate of Science General Studies (non-transfer) (AS.1516)
-
Classes are either fully online or a hybrid (in person with an online component). Access to a reliable computer and reliable internet are necessary for success in this program.
-
Students typically take 2 classes at a time; if you have completed coursework in the past, you might end up taking one class at a time, or have a short break during the term. All the classes you need (major and GE) are part of the program, with the exception of MATH 102 or 110 for the AS General Studies Associate degrees; you can opt to take MATH 14. Regular attendance at in-person classes is critical for success.
-
The ACE program is intensive. Shasta College classes are normally 17 weeks long; the ACE program takes a class (all of the content and assignments) and restructures it into 5 or 8 weeks. Students can expect to spend 6 hours per week in class (Tuesday/Thursday evenings) and another 14 hours per week involved in online instruction. Students can expect to spend additional time each week doing homework (reading, studying, preparing assignments); however the amount of time will vary by student and by class. Current students tell us they are spending an average of 11-16 hours per week on homework/studying. This program requires a significant time commitment.
-
A student’s placement in Math and English, and program space availability, will determine when a student can start the program (January or August). Summer terms are part of the program.
-
Financial Aid is available to those who qualify. Board of Governor’s (BOG) Fee Waiver, Federal Pell Grant, and loans are all options. Students can also apply for Shasta College scholarships and other private scholarships for the ACE Program. Additional details are available on our website.
-
Our website also includes a visual representation of the classes for the 19 month program, as well as a graphic of a sample weekly schedule. Please review this information.

ACE Counseling appointment for ACE program placement – required for participation
We have two ACE Counselors: Rebecka Renfer and Sonia Randhawa. Your ACE counselor will discuss your goals with you to see if the ACE Program is a good fit, and will help you determine your major based on prior credits and goals. They will review your assessments for Math and English and your previously completed coursework to create an educational plan (an outline of requirements for graduation). They will make a recommendation for a program start date to the ACE Coordinator who will review space availability. The ACE Coordinator will communicate with you via email about your start date.
For your ACE Counseling appointment:
-
Call the Counseling Center at 242-7724 to make an appointment with Rebecka or Sonia. Identify yourself as a prospective ACE student who needs a recommendation for ACE placement.
-
Bring the following to your ACE counseling appointment:
-
Completed and signed ACE Program Interest/Placement Form (page 3 of this packet)
-
Copies (unofficial copies are ok) of transcripts from high school and any other college(s)
-
If you do not bring the above items to the appointment, you will have to reschedule your appointment.
Financial Aid
-
Submit the Board of Governor’s (BOG) Fee Waiver application and a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the year you intend to start (e.g., submit the 2017-18 BOG and the 2017-18 FAFSA if you plan to start Fall 2017).
-
Frequently check the Financial Aid” Section of MyShasta to see if the Financial Aid office requires any additional documentation from you (look at “MyForms-START HERE”). Delays in submitting documentation may mean delays in evaluating your eligibility for aid and aid disbursement (payment).
-
Even if you think you won’t qualify for financial aid, we strongly encourage all students to apply. Students are often surprised by what they receive.
