Board of Directors Action Form

To: ACRL Board of Directors

Subject: Resolution of honor for the Atlanta University/Clark Atlanta University School of Library and Information Studies

Submitted by: Beth McNeil, ACRL Director-at-large
LeRoy Lafleur, ACRL Division Councilor

Date submitted: 7/17/17

Background

On August 11, 2017, the Atlanta University Center Robert W. Woodruff Library will hold a reception to coincide with the 10th National Conference of African American Librarians (NCAAL)/Black Caucus of the American Library Association (BCALA) to honor the more than 60 years of furthering diversification of the library profession by the Atlanta University/Clark Atlanta University (AU/CAU) School of Library and Information Studies (SLIS), which closed in 2007. As one of two historically black LIS programs in the U.S. and the only LIS program in Georgia, the closure of AU/CAU SLIS is not only a loss to AU/CAU, but will also have a continued negative impact on diversity in the library profession.

During the reception to honor AU/CAU SLIS, resolutions from supporting organizations will be shared to remember and pay tribute to the program. ACRL was contacted to write a letter of honor in advance of the reception by the AU/CAU SLIS Commemoration Committee. Supporting this recognition aligns with the ACRL Plan for Excellence and ACRL’s commitment to diversity, which it has shown through its Diversity Alliance, Diversity Standards, Diversity Standards Toolkit, and recent affirmation of ACRL’s commitment to diversity.

A small Board working group, comprised of Beth McNeil and LeRoy LaFluer, is submitting a draft resolution (Doc 1.1) for Board review. A virtual discussion and vote will be completed by July 28, 2017 to meet the AU/CAU SLIS Commemoration Committee’s submission deadline.
